Cool, but What Is It About?

Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni… (also known as On a Lustful Night Mingling With a Priest) is a manga-based anime about a shy woman who reunites with a former classmate she once had a crush on. She'd always thought of him as her first love and is shocked to discover that years later, he has become a Buddhist monk.

Saddened by the idea that his religious beliefs have now crushed any possible romantic entanglement with him, she gets drunk and attempts to stagger home. Only he finds her and, concerned for her safety, he takes her home, where they engage in activities very unbecoming for a man of religion! Of course, their relationship escalates further from there, leading to more intense sexual situations.

So...It's Basically Monk Hentai?

"Souryo" (僧侶) is the Japanese word for "monk", and "waku" can be interpreted as a type of things, so "souryo-waku" literally means "anime with monks", or—with a little bit of context—"anime like Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni…", but other anime of this particular type don't typically feature monks or priests at all.

Souryo-Waku is specifically a genre of anime that is predominantly aimed at women. As such, the female main characters are usually timid, submissive women that become more confident as the story progresses. Also, there is more of an emphasis on the personalities of the male characters, so there isn't just one prototype of a male lead. Because of this, if there ends up being a secondary male character, he isn't simply relegated to "the bad boy" or "the competitor."

There is a lot more trust placed in the female protagonists to stand up for herself and the person she loves. Plus, there are even anime of this type—such as Overflow, for example—which is aimed towards men.

Ore no Yubi de Midarero.: Heitengo Futarikiri no Salon de...

Ever since she was young, it was always Fumi's dream to become a successful hairstylist. One day, she met a chubby boy with shaggy hair and glasses who was crying because other kids were bullying him for how he looked. To cheer him up, she styled his hair for free, her very first customer. The boy was happy, and right there, she knew that this is what she wanted to do with her life.

Now an adult, she got a job working as an assistant in a beauty salon. Her charismatic and handsome manager, Nanase, often chastises her for making mistakes. Fumi doesn't mind, though, as she's happy to be there and to improve her skills.

After accidentally spraying a customer's face with water while rinsing their hair, Nanase insists that she stay behind after work for extra practice with him. Unfortunately, she gets too hot and flustered being so close to her attractive boss and sprays him with water too. He casually removes his shirt and orders her to continue washing his hair. Enjoying the reaction he's getting from her, he decides to tease her even further.

How Is This Different From Ecchi?

Each episode is generally only a few minutes long, with a heavy focus on just the main characters for a scene or two, with maybe one other recurring support character; so, this does have the problem of the plot feeling rushed since it has to cram in a story, interesting characters, as well as plenty of erotic scenes into episodes which are roughly no more than five minutes each.

It falls in the realm of somewhere between ecchi and hentai. There are definitely more explicit sex scenes than what you'd see in ecchi, but at the same time, it's not quite as graphic as hentai. For instance, certain body parts can end up being censored in hilariously creative ways as part of the story itself. That being said, these anime tend to come in different versions: the one that airs on TV, another one with some more nude scenes here and there, and of course, an uncensored version that includes steamy sex scenes more akin to hentai.

Skirt no Naka wa Kedamono Deshita.

When timid Shizuka is pressured by her friend to attend a singles mixer, she is quickly intimidated by the handsome men there paying her compliments. She has always been shy around men and doesn't know how to talk to them, but she does end up hitting it off with a gorgeous lady there named Ryou.

After getting a few drinks, Shizuka becomes very tipsy, and Ryou kindly offers her a place to stay for the night. As she shows Shizuka where she'll be sleeping, Ryou starts to kiss her all of a sudden! They fall onto the bed, and Ryou's hands wander all over Shizuka's body. Eventually, Shizuka starts to feel something hard pressing into her, and she notices Ryou's voice has suddenly changed. Her new lady friend was a man this whole time?! He reaches in between her legs and shows her pleasure as she has never had before!

Yubisaki Kara Honki no Netsujou

After her home burns down suddenly, Ryo is rescued by her firefighter childhood friend, Soma. With nowhere else to go, he offers to let her live with him for a while. She quickly gets settled in, but Ryo is still somewhat unnerved by his reputation as a womanizer. Due to this, she is unwilling to admit her feelings towards him and sections off a corner of the apartment, claiming it as hers.

While explaining the new rules to her hospitable rescuer, he shrugs and starts to get undressed after a hard day's work. Ryo notices the dark bruises on his back from when he saved her the other day, so concerned for her friend, she steps into "his" territory and he pounces! He grabs her suddenly and playfully holds her captive in his lap. As a penalty for invading his space, he teases her body, sending waves of pleasure coursing through her. Pointing out that it isn't fair that she should have all the fun, he easily scoops her onto the bed, placing her completely at his mercy.

Final Thoughts

Female ecchi and hentai fans are sure to enjoy the adorable storylines, along with a heavier focus on the women as being more than just eye candy; plus a much wider variety of interesting male characters that are allowed to be more than mere blank slates or archetypes.

As you can see, Souryo-Waku stories are cute, sexy, and very entertaining, so we highly recommend both men and women to check them out... and let us know what you think!
