Sonju, we discovered last chapter, is related to the queen and our faces couldn’t contain our genuine surprise. Chapter 157 goes a bit into Sonju’s past to show why he’s not like his older sister the queen and why he respects life versus uses it for glutinous reasons. Trained as a hunter early on, Sonju killed to feed but was taught that even killing has to have an air of respect behind it. Sonju was also taught that life is a cycle and we borrow from it constantly. With these words in his heart, it seemed Sonju—as we discover from the queen—would eventually break from his lineage to help Mujika based on an old faith and we’re glad he didn’t end up becoming like the mad queen herself.

Back in the present, our queen continues her battle with Sonju and we learn the reason she survived her first death was she had two cores and only one was destroyed. Sonju knows where the second core is but the queen isn’t too worried thanks in large part to the fact that her body is now ten times stronger than it was before. Sonju can’t afford to fail as he doesn’t have another core and thus can be killed by the queen with ease. The queen won’t go down without further bloodshed and as the last panels show, she’s aiming now for the kids and Mujika! Sonju will need to come up with a plan quickly or our heroes will become the next meal for this evil woman! Can Sonju muster up the power to outwit his sister or will the queen continue to devour endlessly and reinstate herself as the central power of this demon world? Chapter 158 will no doubt have some answers for us but till then let’s talk about some great moments from chapter 157 of Yakusoku no Neverland!

Why You Should Read Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) Chapter 157

1. Sonju’s Past Discovered

While we don’t doubt Yakusoku no Neverland could go deeper into Sonju’s past, chapter 157 at least showed us what makes him different from his tyrannical sister. Taught respect for killing his prey and to understand life’s systems, Sonju clearly realized that killing for pleasure wasn’t his thing. Unlike the queen, Sonju gained a sense of understanding and probably later realized that the demon world’s current system of hierarchy was—and is—flawed.

2. Never-ending Hunger

We’ve noticed the queen seems truly focused on devouring for more power but we’ve also noticed this dire need to feed doesn’t seem to have an end. As the last panel shows a concerned Mujika wondering why the queen feeds like she does, we have to in turn wonder the same thing. Is there another reason besides power that fuels the queen’s lust for food? Maybe future chapters of Yakusoku no Neverland will tell us, but for now, we can only theorize like the rest of you readers.

Final Thoughts

Yakusoku no Neverland 157 was a nice way of showing the extreme differences between Sonju and the queen. Readers got to learn more about Sonju’s past and we even learned from the queen why he threw away his royalty. The fight between Sonju and the queen continues and we can only hope Sonju emerges as the winner. What do you think will happen in the next chapter of Yakusoku no Neverland?
