Yu Yu Hakusho 25th Anniversary Blu Ray Box Set

Back in December of last year, Studio Pierrot revealed that a 25th Anniversary Yu Yu Hakusho Blu Ray set. Long-time fans were ecstatic about this announcement because not only were they getting a Blu Ray version of their favorite anime, it was also coming with two new OVA's. Now, we only have to wait a few more days until the first volume arrives! Let's not waste any time and get right into it!

What’s in the Blu Ray set?

On July 27th, the first batch of Yu Yu Hakusho 25th Anniversary Blu Ray sets will be released. This will include the Spirit Detective Arc, episodes 1-26, along with the two films. The second set will be released on August 28th and will contain the Dark Tournament Arc. The third set is scheduled for a September 26th release and will contain the Sensui Arc. The fourth and final set, scheduled for October 26th, will contain the Makai (or Demon World) Arc.

The original cast reunited to do the voice work for the two new OVA's. We can't express how relieved we are to hear that. Hearing Yusuke, or anyone for that matter, with a different voice would have ruined the experience of watching those movies. By the way, these movies are short stories that were not a part of the original anime but were included in the manga during its original run. So, they aren't really new additions to the overall plot, they're just filming adaptations from the manga.

Movies?

As mentioned up above, the two films from the 90's will be included with the first volume of the set. The first is "Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie", also titled "The Golden Seal". The movie begins with Yusuke and Kuwabara receiving word from Botan that Koenma has been kidnapped and held hostage. The two had to spirit world to collect the Golden Seal and exchange it before sundown otherwise Koenma's will be killed by a giant demon.

Things don't quite go as smoothly as they hoped and the end up encountering various demons who are trying to steal the Seal for themselves. Will they make it past the horde of demons in their way? What connection does the giant have to Koenma and his past? Does Yusuke have the power to defeat a demon capable of kidnapping the ruler of the Spirit World? Good guys usually win in anime films, right? Well, you have to see the film to find out!

The second film is "Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report", also titled "Fight for the Netherworld". This film begins with Koenma facing a crisis in Spirit World, sounds similar to the first film, hmm... Anyway, it appears that Spirit World is being submerged in water for unknown reasons. Just before being carried off by a strong current, Koenma entrusts a powerful object to Botan and asks her to deliver it to Yusuke. On her way to the Living World, she is struck by lightning and is severely injured. By pure luck, she falls from the sky and lands onto the roof of Yusuke's school where he was coincidentally waiting because he was ditching class as usual.

Right before passing out, Botan asks Yusuke to visit Hinageshi. This sets off a series of events and encounters that bring to light the revelation that thousands of years ago there existed a fourth world, the Nether World. Through the efforts of its powerful king, Yakumo, that dimension is threatening to cross over into the Human World and enslave humanity. It's up to the Spirit Detective and his friends to put an end to the inter-dimensional crossover and stop Yakumo from ruling both worlds.

OVA’s?

Two original OVA's will be released in this collection. The first is titled "Two Shots" and recounts the story of how Kurama (the legendary fox demon thief) and Hiei (wielder of the Jagan and Dragon of the Darkness Flame) met. We know that this film is based on the same short story written in the manga. So even though details of this new OVA are scarce, you could read the manga version to see how the story unfolds. But, we recommend you wait for the anime version since fight sequences and emotional scenes in Yu Yu Hakusho never let the fans down.

The second OVA is titled "All or Nothing" and will adopt one of the last chapters of the manga. The main cast reunites to take on a hostage crisis situation in the spirit world. Both OVA's will be bundled with the fourth volume of the 25th Anniversary collection, which is scheduled to ship out on October 26th.

Final Thoughts

We are huge fans of Yoshihiro Togashi, the mangaka for Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter. We can't wait to re-watch one of our favorite shows all over again. It's one of the few anime where we highly prefer the English dub over the Japanese voice acting. Luckily, the original cast reunited to voice the OVA's, too! We hope you check out this collection and support the genius that is Yoshihiro Togashi.

As always, thank you for reading this article. We hope you have a wonderful day and we'll see you in the next one!
