10 Anime Characters Who Might Have Enjoyed Quarantine

2020 was marked by a new experience for everyone in this world: Quarantine. Everyone had different experiences with it. For some, it started as “Thank God I don’t have to go outside and socialize anymore” but ended with much mental exhaustion after realizing that staying at home is only fun when you’re all alone without family around. For others, they hated the idea of quarantine from the very beginning and the lack of going outside for people who derive their energy from outside was particularly impactful. For many others, it was the lack of meeting their loved ones often or missing various events like anime conventions that were canceled.

But as the world is slowly but surely returning to the way it was, we at Honey’s Anime were hit with a question. How would anime characters feel if their world was hit with a massive quarantine forcing them to stay at home? Would they have liked it or found it immensely annoying? How would their life be impacted by such an impactful change? Here are 10 anime characters who would’ve felt immensely grateful and right at home during a quarantine.

10. Shinichi Sakurai from Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! (Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2020 - September 2020

Shinichi Sakurai from Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out would’ve loved the quarantine because of his character. With an introverted personality and a love for being alone and away from others, Shinichi would’ve enjoyed staying at home and gaming all day and night. The lack of social contact would’ve actually been enjoyable for Shinichi rather than upsetting. Playing games and just lazing around would’ve been Shinichi’s quarantine lifestyle and he would have had no complaints.

9. Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: April 2019 - September 2019

Tohru would’ve possibly had the time of her life during quarantine. I mean, who doesn’t want to stay at home with the Souma family and bond with them, spending all your time with them? Add in the fact that your crush is going to be by your side all the time and perhaps the relationship between Tohru and Kyo would’ve progressed a lot faster in those days when they’re all stuck at home. If not, it would’ve at least strengthened their bond. Moreover, the Souma family can use their animalistic connections to get almost anything they want from stores without putting themselves in danger. In fact, we at Honey’s Anime would wager that perhaps Tohru might have been grateful for not having to go out much for more than one reason.

8. Eishi Tsukasa from Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara (Food Wars! The Third Plate)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2017 - December 2017

As the First Seat of Totsuki Culinary Academy, Eishi Tsukasa cannot be further from the ideal image of his title. Though popular and well known almost everywhere for his skill with presenting the best food, Tsukasa doesn't like the spotlight. While he certainly would’ve had to put in a lot more effort being the First Seat to ensure a smooth transition for everyone who is a part of Food Wars, Tsukasa would’ve thrived staying at home. He is known to be very efficient working with no one around and what better place to stay and work away from prying eyes other than your very own home? Juggling between online classes and refining his skills with food, Tsukasa would’ve been right at home during quarantine, perhaps even grateful for it.

7. Yuu Ishigami from Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai?: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen (Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2020 - June 2020

Next up, we have an otaku who just hates people. One of the characteristics that make Yuu Ishigami loveable and stand out from the Kaguya-sama: Love is War cast is his love for all things otaku (including anime songs!) and the fact that he doesn't like to be around too many people at once. He is known to have a very cynical and depressing outlook on life and perhaps staying at home could’ve helped him thrive knowing that everyone is in the same boat as him. In the anime and manga, it is connoted that Yuu actually likes handling most of his student council work from home, rarely coming to school. We imagine that Yuu would’ve been extremely grateful for having another excuse to stay at home which might actually enhance his performance overall.

6. Ena Ibarada from Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita. (Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2020 - March 2020

For those of you who haven’t watched this anime that brought something new to the romance genre with its scientific principles, you really missed out on one of the memorable supporting characters of Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It, Ena Ibarada. She is a beautiful woman and a lazy scientist with perfect pink hair and a sharp tongue. She is known to act like a cat often and we wager that she would’ve loved quarantine staying at home and playing games. Known to be very smart, she loves sleeping and not many things in life catch her attention often. We think that she would’ve found quarantine interesting and preferable because she wouldn’t have had to commute every day. We also imagine that she would constantly nag Kousuke Inukai just to make things interesting and make him keep her company and play along with her.

5. Shouta Aizawa from Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2016 - June 2016

Also known as Eraser Head, Aizawa loves sleeping and is seen exerting very little energy in class and being cocooned inside his sleeping bag as he tasks the student representatives to do the menial tasks that do not require much of his assistance. He also hates being the center of attention which sort of goes along with his job as a hero and a teacher. But with quarantine, we can be sure that Aizawa would’ve immensely enjoyed not being in the spotlight from his home.

We imagine that Aizawa would not force his students to have their cameras switched on while keeping his own switched off as well. We also think that he probably would’ve come up with many creative ways to teach his lessons because while he is the laziest, he is also one of the best teachers of UA. Well…either he’ll give them a good time with his online classes grumbling about how inept it really is or just work the students to death as always with his well-known deception. It can go either way with Aizawa-sensei!

4. Hirotaka Nifuji from Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku)

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: April 2018 - June 2018

Of course, a list about introverts would not be right without Hirotaka Nifuji. Who doesn’t relate to this man and his ways? Known to be very good at his work, Nifuji is known to finish everything as soon as possible to spend the rest of his time at work playing games. Sounds perfect right? Now, add in the fact that shy and introverted Hirotaka is forced…well, more like “forced” to stay at home and work instead of being among other people. We think that Hirotaka would’ve enjoyed it immensely because it would be the perfect environment for him to thrive in. Just spending time reading manga, playing lots of games on his Nintendo Switch, working to finish his tasks, and inviting his girlfriend, Narumi home to spend time with her would be almost every otaku’s dream. But when Hirotaka loses the sense of time, he tends to go overboard gaming all the time without stopping to even eat or sleep. However, we think that he might have enough help from Narumi to keep him alive.

3. Shiro and Sora from No Game No Life

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2014 - June 2014

Up next, we have our No Game No Life protagonists, Shiro and Sora. You might be wondering why we have included both of them together. The siblings literally cannot live away from each other (even by a few meters) and we definitely did not want to interrupt their lazy sessions by causing such discomfort! Shiro and Sora, together known as the player “Blank”, quite literally don’t like the world we live in. Rejected by society, the very smart duo chose to turn their attention to gaming of all kinds which actually helped them become rulers of a different world. As rulers, we think that the siblings would’ve asked everyone to stay safe during the pandemic while leaving the other affairs to Stephanie Dola as they laze around, eat lots of food and play games, isolating themselves from society too.

2. Ban from Nanatsu no Taizai (Seven Deadly Sins)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 2014 - March 2015

One particular hobby that was cultivated widely by everyone during quarantine was baking. From cakes and brownies to cookies and macaroons, even drinks like the dalgona coffee were spread worldwide. We like to think that the one character who would’ve spent most of his time baking and cooking would be Ban from Seven Deadly Sins. We think that Ban would’ve enjoyed staying at the Boar’s Hat with the other sins and the love of his life, baking new treats for them every day to pass the time. While Meliodas’ cooking is rather hopeless, we think that Ban’s cooking would’ve kept a steady income for the Boar’s Hat because of its deliciousness and vibrance of color. And maybe the virus spread and quarantine would’ve actually delayed the Ten Commandments from being resurrected early.

1. Nasa Yuzaki from Tonikaku Kawaii (TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2020 - December 2020

Finally, we have Nasa Yuzaki from Tonikaku Kawaii. We think that Nasa would’ve enjoyed working from home because he wouldn’t have to spend any time away from his adorable wife, Tsukasa. They would always be together, taking one day at a time as they bond by talking, cooking together, watching TV and maybe…even sleeping together. Quarantine is a great opportunity for new couples to spend time together and we think that Nasa and Tsukasa would not have wasted any of it. We also know that Nasa is reliable enough to change a sudden crisis into something lighter. With Nasa around, Tsukasa would not have to be worried about everything that is going on in the world because of Nasa’s optimism and love for her. Together, they would’ve chosen to make the best of it by relying on each other for their shortcomings and being each other’s source of comfort.

Final Thoughts

This list is definitely not exhaustive and there are many more characters who would’ve enjoyed quarantine like Umaru-chan from Himouto! Umaru-chan who would’ve probably just eaten lots of snacks and treats paired with a big bottle of cola while gaming away and yet miraculously never gaining weight from all that inactivity. Quarantine was a very different experience for everyone but all these characters have at least one thing in common: that they all would’ve enjoyed quarantine!

A college student and a hopeless romantic weeb slowly realizing her dreams of working in the anime industry and living like the characters of Love is Hard for Otaku with her boyfriend. Anime and writing have and always will be a huge part of my life. When I'm not watching anime or reading manga, you can find me impulsively buying kawaii things from stationery and snacks to other aesthetic things I 'need'. I also dream about visiting Japan one day, both for its culture and anime, while hoping to master the romantic language that is Japanese.
