We’ve talked about dozens of isekai stories here on Honey’s Anime, but these next ones are special even amongst others in the genre. These are a testament to how diverse the isekai genre can be. While the circumstances of the protagonists are similar, the worlds that they travel to and the adventures they lead are completely separate. Here are four isekai manga you just have to read!
1. Isekai Ojisan
- Authors: HotondoShindeiru
- Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Slice of Life, Seinen
- Volumes: 2
- Published: 2018 - Ongoing
Takafumi’s “Ojisan” uncle was reincarnated to another world, but back home he was just in a coma for 17 years after being hit by a truck, like so many others. Thought to be crazy by his nephew, after he displays the elite tier magic that he learned, Takafumi has no choice but to believe him. His uncle now regales him with tales of his adventures and lost loves while pining for all the Sega games he missed out on. It’s a dark comedy of an isekai that takes place mostly in the real world, but with some fantasy elements. An interesting read!
2. Ore to Kawazu-san no Isekai Hourouki
- Authors: Kuzumochi
- Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
- Volumes: 5
- Published: December 2013 - Complete
The most powerful magician of another world used all of his power and life force to summon average college student Tarou and passed away. Upset by this, he reincarnated the old man himself as a frog, and both learned that he had 8 million times the magical power of anyone else. Unfortunately, Tarou doesn’t have enough to send himself back, so he’s forcing the old frogman to show him the strange fantasy world he brought him to, while its inhabitants liken Tarou’s appearance to the advent of a dark god. A comedy where the protagonist isn’t on the same page as everyone else, it’s an interesting isekai about differences in perspective.
3. Takarakuji de 40-oku Atattanda kedo Isekai ni Ijuusuru
- Authors: Suzunoki, Kuro
- Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Slice of Life, Romance
- Volumes: 5
- Published: November 2016 - Ongoing
Shino Kazura won 4 billion yen in the lottery, but before he could enjoy it he was bombarded by greedy relatives and strangers all seeking a handout. Unable to bear it anymore, he went to a hidden family home in the country but didn’t realize it housed a gateway to another world.
The inhabitants of the other world know nothing of Japan and live very basic and impoverished lives, which Kazura uses his money to slowly improve. Advancing agriculture, delivering medicine, these people believe Kazura is the reincarnation of a god who once enriched their lives centuries ago. This isekai manga is an exciting story of a good Samaritan trying to avoid handout seekers, and quickly living up to this new world’s expectations of him.
4. Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation)
- Authors: Rifujin na Magonote
- Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
- Volumes: 10
- Published: May 2014 - Ongoing
Once a 34-year-old recluse, Rudeus Greyrat was reincarnated as an infant in a fantasy world with all his memories intact. Determined to use his second chance to enrich his family’s lives and do his best, he quickly studied magic and behaved more maturely than any pre-teen should. However, after a world-shaking cataclysm befell his family, he’s desperately put into a situation that few could survive, let alone prepare for. Deadset on succeeding in this life by reclaiming his family and friends versus his previous life, he sets off on a journey that will take all the long years he has left to live.
Mushoku Tensei is arguably the most well thought out isekai manga of recent years. It has a complete web and light novel series that have long since ended, but the manga is still ongoing and from its pace, has several more years left to go until it reaches its conclusion. If you consider yourself a fan of isekai or manga in general, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
