Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) Preview (No Spoilers)

Most people don't believe in demons. If someone disappears or bodies appear mauled, animals are blamed. But when people do believe in demons, they can call the Demon Slayer Corps, a group of humans that have trained hard for generations to keep mankind safe from flesh-eating demons. Kanao Tsuryuri is a member of the newest generation of Demon Slayers and a Tsuguko training to become the successor of a Hashira, or Pillar when they die or retire. All her life, she was taught that demons were evil and unredeemable, but her world view changes when she meets fellow Demon Slayer Tanjirou Kamado. Tanjirou’s sister, Nezuko, is a demon who fights alongside her brother to destroy demons while Tanjirou searches for a cure to turn her back to human.

Kanao Tsuyuri Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. She Is Cute

While the title of the cutest girl in the series goes to Nezuko, Kanao Tsuyuri comes in a close second. She’s very close in age to Tanjirou, wears her hair in a nice ponytail accented with a butterfly comb, and always seems to be smiling. Sure, her smile hides a very dark and troubled past, but we can’t know that just by looking. Her attacks and kimono are also butterfly themed, so even when she kills she looks cute.

2. She Is Very Efficient

Because she is being prepared to become a pillar, Kanao has had more training than her peers at Final Selection, but even with that extra training, she is still a beginner Demon Slayer. Nevertheless, she is the only one of the group that manages to finish the Final Selection test without a single wound. When we see her again, we notice that she always kills demons quickly, to make better use of her time.

3. She Is a Very Good Fighter But Also Humble

Thanks to that extra training that we mentioned before, Kanao has honed her abilities to a point that none of the other beginner Demon Slayers have. This makes her able to go toe to toe with very dangerous and powerful demons, without breaking a sweat. What makes this even more interesting is that Kanao doesn't take pride in her abilities. While she may toy with some demons, she never lords her position over the others and instead tries to learn from them.

4. She Is Strong-Willed

Kanao had a very hard life before the Demon Slayer Corps adopted her and choose her to become a future Pillar. Her past broke her a bit and caused her trust issues and she became unable to talk to others without the help of a coin toss, but despite all of that, she is still standing. She still has something to fight for, and she is little by little recovering what she lost as a young child. Because of this, it’s impossible to deny that her will is made of steel.

5. She Is Loyal to a Fault

Because of that horrible past she had, she is very grateful for the opportunity to live a more comfortable life with the Demon Slayer Corps at the Butterfly Mansion. She is also ready to die not for the Corps themselves, but for the Tsuyuri sisters, who made her part of their family and treated her like a biological sister even if she wasn’t. If you earn her loyalty, you will never lose it unless you try to hurt her family.

Final Thoughts

Because one day she will become a Pillar of the Demon Corps, Kanao is the only one of the students who survived the Final Selection exam with Tanjiro who doesn’t travel with him and his sister. This means that we don’t get to see much of her, but that may change in future seasons that we really hope the series gets. And let’s be honest, we want to see more of her because she is amazing.
