The fandom of NaruHina is extremely large amongst the Naruto fanbase, which is admittedly a big deal because the Naruto fanbase has grown so large over the years since its inception. Based on a cursory research, 60% of fans support Naruto and Hinata getting together during the series, or at least at the end of it.
Whether it was his plan all along, or it was done by popular demand, Kishimoto-sensei granted the wish of NaruHina fans everywhere by having them get married by the end of the manga series and having an entire Naruto movie dedicated to it. So just why is everyone so hyped over this pairing? We attempt to explore the various reasons the NaruHina pairing is so popular.
Join us as we celebrate the 5 Reasons Why Naruto and Hinata Make Our Lives Complete.
Note: This article contains spoilers for the anime as well as the The Last: Naruto the Movie and Boruto: Naruto the Movie.
1. Her Dedication
It’s no secret to fans that Hinata has had a crush on Naruto ever since they were in the academy together. She’s secretly admired his dedication and perseverance despite his seeming lack of talent throughout the years. In a way, she sees him as the person that she can never be. Like Naruto, she has a crippling flaw that a ninja should never have; kindness.
This lack of killer instinct has led her to perform on a subpar level throughout her academy years and possibly even beyond. In her own way, she seems to have given up. Yet, she met someone who didn’t. A boy who was laughed out of class, scorned by the village and couldn’t even perform the most basic of techniques; yet he didn’t falter in the face of failure and continued to push on towards his dream.
Hinata: “In my eyes, you’re a proud failure! When I look at you, I get an intense feeling in my heart. Because you are not perfect…Because you fail…you have the strength to get back up…that I believe, is what true strength is.”
On the other end of the spectrum, we have the oblivious knuckleheaded ninja who never seems to notice that at least one person in the class likes him. Not just likes him, but likes likes him. Instead, he focuses all his attention on Sakura. Hate her or love her, fans can all agree that we collectively facepalmed every time he tried to pull his “smooth” moves on the pink headed kunoichi. Sure enough it led to nowhere.
That’s why it was such a breath of fresh air in the series when there finally seemed to be traction for Naruto to be paired with someone else. Before that point, fans didn’t dare hope that Naruto would ever end up with another girl and it seemed like he’d be doomed to chase after Sakura the same way he chased after Sasuke throughout the series. But as he grew and matured he started to realise that there were other people around him…there’s that…and a very special scene that initiated most of the changes as well. (Keep reading on to find out what that scene is!)
Of course when they finally got together, fans felt like the puzzle pieces had finally been put together. Naruto got the love he needed, and Hinata become as resolved as he was at the end of the series. We’ll end of this reason with a quote from our Heroine.
Hinata: “Naruto, I’ve always been chasing after you. Even now…But once this war ends, I’m going to stop once and for all! Because next time, I will be by your side, holding your hand, walking with you! Please! Wait for me!”
2. Their Family
Note: This section specifically contains minor spoilers for Boruto: Naruto the Movie.
Boruto (or Bolt) and Himawari are just super kawaii! With Boruto taking more from his father and gaining the cute boyish charm and Himawari taking after her mother with her adorable appearance, the two children are just so cute that fans can’t help but want to eat them up. Debuting in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, the two kids are not just cute but have their own fleshed out personalities as well that make them more than just carbon copies of their parents.
Boruto had a much different upbringing than Naruto. Unlike Naruto who was an orphan, Boruto grew up with nurturing and loving parents whom he inherited his skills from. Because of that, he is somewhat above the curve and even quite intelligent at times. However, this can cause him to be somewhat arrogant and lord his skills over his team-mates. Despite all that, Boruto still places his family and friends over all else, showing that like every ninja of Konoha, he possesses the Will of Fire.
Himawari is the opposite of her brother. Kind, patient and cheerful, Himawari presents the image of the perfect daughter to any family. She shows a deep love for every one of her family members, staying by Hinata’s side when she’s injured and even showing a degree of understanding towards Naruto’s absence from the family at times. Despite all that, under that kind exterior lies the famous Uzumaki temper that made Kushina Uzumaki become known as the Bloody Habanero. When provoked, Himawari shows a violent and aggressive side that is enough to make her own older brother flee from her in terror.
The most important aspect isn’t just the children. It’s the fact that he had these children because he got together with Hinata in the end. Growing up alone his whole life, he finally has a family to call his own. With a loving wife, a daughter and a son, Naruto finally has the complete package that he deserves. And that’s just what he needs.
One big happy family!
3. That Scene
Hinata: “I used to always cry and give up. I made many wrong turns. But you helped me find the right path. I always chased after you. I wanted to catch up to you. I wanted to walk beside you all the time. I just wanted to be with you. You changed me! Your smile is what saved me! That is why I’m not afraid to die protecting you! Because…I love you…”
Yes, it’s that scene. If you haven’t guessed what it is yet, take a moment to remember before it’s revealed to you. Ready? That scene of course, refers to the confession scene between Hinata and Naruto. Yes there’s been plenty of NaruHina scenes, especially throughout the war, but this one in particular has significance because it was the first major one between the two of them that indicated that there was indeed a future for the NaruHina pairing in the series.
It’s also a culmination of everything that has transpired between Hinata and Naruto. She’s chased him all her life, first seeing him as an ideal, then starting to fall in love with him. Instead of being the damsel in distress, she becomes the one who saves him from Pein, the overpowered pseudo god who levelled Konoha with one jutsu.
On Naruto’s side of things, her confessions serves as a wakeup call to him. Naruto has been trudging through life ever since the climax of team 7 went down. Sasuke defecting from the village was the first. Realising Sakura would always love Sasuke and not he was the second. Losing Jiraiya was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Her declaration of love not only served to make NaruHina fans squeal in delight, but to show the protagonist of the series that there are people who love him that he didn’t even know about. That they’re willing to go to such lengths to protect him that they’d face off against an all-powerful god with gravity powers. This serves the literary purpose of making the main character more open to affections later in the series.
And we know how that turned out…
4. Their Pain
The highlight of the series early on is the pain that Naruto faces as a Jinchuuriki. We get scenes of him not having control over his chakra, being shunned by the villagers in general and that one scene where he sits alone on the swing after failing the graduation exam for the third time. The main theme of the series starts to shine through as he triumphs through the hardships presented to him and eventually becomes the hero he always dreamed himself to be.
What tends to be side lined is the parallel character progression of Hinata alongside him. Hinata does not come from an easy past as well. She’s beaten by her sister in daily spars, her father shuns her and Neji outright hates her. But like Naruto, she grows to become a strong woman in time who proves everyone wrong about her. Another interesting to note is that her growth tends to lag slightly behind Naruto’s in the series at first.
When Naruto is giving his “fate sucks” speech to Neji, Hinata is still slightly behind in character development, hiding behind a log while talking to Naruto before the tournament. However, as time goes on, the gap becomes smaller and smaller until it eventually culminates in the confession scene, where she becomes his equal and shows it through her actions. They’ve grown together from their pain and it all culminates in them facing Pein. Heh.
Further on, the two are seen supporting each other through hard times during the war. When someone very important to Naruto died during the final battle, he started to lose conviction and this time, it became Hinata who encouraged him to never give up. Because that is their Nindo, their Ninja Way!
5. The Payoff
Note: This section contains spoilers for The Last: Naruto The Movie.
All that build up, foreshadowing and climaxes over the series would mean nothing if the fans aren’t provided with a very spectacular payoff. Studio Pierrot was faced with an insurmountable task of giving fans the NaruHina send-off that everyone wanted to see. And boy, did they deliver.
The Last: Naruto The Movie would be more aptly named if it were called NaruHina: The NaruHina Movie. Naruto doesn’t magically get together with Hinata. They are simply too busy fighting crazy Uchihas and monstrous Juubi to even think of romantic attachments. So, the movie takes place after the war when all is said and done. Naruto has achieve Hero status with his own gaggle of fan girls.
This doesn’t make it much easier for Hinata to reinitiate the chemistry they shared during the war. Through twists and turns of events, Naruto eventually realises that he has feelings for her too. But before he can do anything about it, Hinata gets abducted. We’ll leave the rest of the movie for you viewers who have yet to watch it, but here’s a something to further entice you. In his bid to rescue her, Naruto fights bad guys. On the moon. In full tailed beast mode.
Enough said about that.
The most important scene comes after all the fighting has done and the hero has rescued the princess. They stroll down memory lane together and remember the hard times in their lives and how it's all lead to that moment. In a burst of chakra, the two ascend to the sky. With the moon as the backdrop, they kiss in the moonlight, sealing their love forever.
Life Complete.
