Ajin follows the story of Kei Nagai, who is a normal high school student with friends and common high school issues. Until one day when he finds out that those issues are nothing compared to what he faces now. After somehow surviving an accident that should have killed him, Kei finds out that he is an Ajin or demi-human. Ajin appears 17 years ago in Africa. Un-killable, they suddenly change the flow of the war on the continent. Labeled as a threat to humanity, governments around the world begin to search for Ajin to study them, but only a few exist.
Suddenly his world is uprooted as his own government turns its back on him and begins to hunt him down. The government conducts illegal and unethical experiments on Ajin to “understand them” but really it is killing them over and over to see how to exterminate this threat. But are Ajin a threat? Kei wants to go back to a normal life, but after encountering a fellow Ajin named Satou and seeing his dark plans to terrorize Japan, Kei oddly aligns himself with the government that previously hunted him down in order to prevent more loss of life.
Ajin is a fantastic story of action, horror, and supernatural, and it aligns itself with the seinen genre perfectly. We previously posted a 6 anime like Ajin article that you can find at the bottom of this list, but be sure to check out this one and enjoy the update! Fans who enjoyed the previous list will be able to enjoy those listed here too.
Similar Anime to Ajin
1. Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)
- Episodes: 11
- Aired: Jul. 2014 – Sept 2014
A nuclear facility is attacked in Japan and the only clue is a word painted in red; “VON”. After being horribly mocked and ridiculed for failing to act and respond properly, the government of Japan tries to figure out what happened. The event begins to fade until a video surfaces of two men who claim that they will destroy parts of Tokyo if the inept police force cannot stop them. The police bumble their way through trying to stop these two terrorists but Nine and Twelve, two brothers, have other plans and poor Lisa Mishima is dragged into this tale of murder, terror, suspense, and death.
Of the shows on this list, Zankyou no Terror, and one other that you can catch below are probably the closest that you can get to an almost exact copy of the story of Ajin complete with similar themes and actions. The police and government are horribly inept in both series, which again, draws parallels to actual Japanese society. Terrorism is also a central theme shared with both along with the main characters fleeing from retribution. While Kei is aligned with the government, Lisa, Nine, Twelve are against it. But do not let that scare you away as the story is amazingly fantastic.

2. Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte –the maxim-)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct 2014 – Mar 2015
Aliens just started invading the Earth one day taking over the bodies of whatever living things that they land on. The thing is though, is that they need to land on the head of the creature in order to take over the brain and fully control them. Shinichi Izumi one day is sleeping when sadly one of the parasites lands on his right hand. Failing to reach his brain, it can only control his hand and make it take on different forms, shapes, and weapons. At first terrified, he learns to accept Migi in a world where not only does he have to hide this characteristic to himself, Shinichi must rely on Migi as other parasite-infected hosts come to hunt him down and kill him.
This was the other show that we previously mentioned that is just so similar to Ajin, it’s fantastic! Both shows are thrillers that make you wonder just what action either Kei or Shinichi is going to take next. There is also the darkness aspect as well as murder and death are common themes. There is also, until the fight against Satou comes into light, the battle between supernatural and human happens with most humans being unaware of what horrors are going on right around them. Both Kei and Shinichi are forced to become anti-heroes in order to survive becoming killers in the process. The overall dark theme and the fact that both Kei’s and Shinichi’s lives are changed in a second is a similarly shared theme.

3. Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2017 – Mar. 2017
Youjo Senki was the sleeper hit of Winter 2017. Tanya Degurechaff is a ruthless and cunning soldier in the military of her country that is essentially a re-telling of Germany in WWII. Previously, Tanya was a man who was too cruel and aggressive in her daily work life that she, or rather he, pissed off someone he fired and so to get revenge, this person shoves him in front of a train for revenge. In that moment, Being X as it is known, reveals itself to Tanya as God. Tanya vehemently denies it, and thus to show its power, he is reborn as Tanya in a poor country with exceptional magical prowess. She makes her way into the military using her skills and before she knows it, she is commanding a powerful platoon, but she just wants to live peacefully. However, she is willing to sacrifice even her own men, to achieve her goals, all while denying Being X as it reveals itself to her countless times.
Tanya, just like Kei, wants to be left alone to live in peace. Tanya is harassed by Being X while Kei is harassed by the actions of Satou and his cronies. Both are jam packed with action, explosions, and running. Tanya just wants to survive while Kei has to. Both are full too of death, and characters that must kill in order to survive. At the end of the day, morality is out and rationality is king for these two series.

4. Psycho-Pass
- Episodes: 22
- Aired: Oct 2012 – Mar 2013
In the 22nd century, all weapons are gone in Japan. Rather, every crime is evaluated by a system known as the Sibyl System. Police officers carry guns, but these guns with the help of the Sibyl System can judge if a criminal is going to actually pose a threat or not. Supposedly. Akane Tsunemori, fresh out of training joins a group of experienced officers and has one goal: uphold justice. The problem though is that the longer she works for the force, the more she realizes how subjective the Sibyl System can be and that there may be cracks in this purported perfect system. Struggling to learn the truth, Akane tries to make her place in this world.
Much like in Ajin with Kei, Akane in Psycho-Pass struggles with morality often. While the governments will say one thing in both series, we see that the underbelly of the government is not so clear cut as some things will be carried out for the sake of being carried out. This drives Kei to turn his back on his fellow Ajin, and Akane to question authority. Dark themes of murder, deceit, and hopelessness are rampant in this series. At the end of the day, Kei and Akane want to do the right thing, but they also want to do it their way which they are not always able to.

5. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2016 - Mar 2016
Satoru Fujinuma has a weird ability. When something bad is about to happen, he is transported back a few minutes in time to before the accident happens so that he can prevent whatever it about to transpire. When his mother is murdered and he is framed, he begins to run, but something happens and he is sent far back into time. So far back, he is now an elementary school student and placed right before his classmate, a rather shy girl named Kayo Hinazuki, is murdered. He gathers clues and information to save her jumping between present day and past to try and help, but can he save her while protecting others around him from being hurt?
If you have not seen Bokudake, NOW IS THE TIME. This excellent thriller anime, just like Ajin, has one fantastic characteristic, the main character is not some weepy, weak main character. Kei and Satoru both are determined to figure out what is going on. Abuse, lies, deceit, and death are also all shared themes. While Satoru is not hunted, Kayo is once she goes missing from her home just like how Kei is hunted. They also would not be supernatural without the time travel elements via Satoru and the Ajin-ness of Kei. While the stories by vary, the ride is the same. It is an excellent thriller anime that you should not miss out on! Also for what it is worth, both Ajin and Boku dake ga Inai Machi have excellent Opening songs.

6. Death Note
- Episodes: 37
- Aired: Oct 2006 – Jun 2007
Ryuk, a death god bored with life, decides to have some fun and drops a Death Note into the human world. It is picked up by Light Yagami who discovers that if he writes the name of a person, after seeing their face, within the note, they will die. He discovers this after killing a criminal. Thus Light takes it upon himself to dole out justice in the form of a “god”. However, the government senses that something is wrong when it is just too convenient that all of these criminals are dying. They bring in quirky genius detective L to solve the crimes. Suddenly it is a race to not only keep his identity hidden but continue to play god for Light.
Most people might not think about it right away, but Ajin and Death Note are very, very similar. Both are dark thrillers with action, suspense, and of course, murder. Kei and Light are true anti-heroes and the bumbling government struggles to try and solve a problem that they just cannot seem to do. Oddly too, the Shinigami of Death Note look a lot like the IBMs of Ajin. Both Kei and Light are fleeing from the police while also serving justice putting them in unique situations. Finally, the ideals of morality; what is good and what is bad, are blurred because the truth is not black and white.

Final Thoughts
With that, our updated version of 6 anime like Ajin wraps up! There are so many dark thriller anime out there that exist that we could probably write this article 10 times over and still not repeat. That being said, what do you think of this update? Let us know as we are always looking for good suggestions to update our lists! Until next time.
The mysterious Ajin are immortal, have dark supernatural abilities and look just like humans. They appeared 17 years ago on a battlefield in Africa. Nobody seems to know whether they have surfaced naturally of if they were created for a specific purpose. However, while they have been found all over the world, there are only about 46 of them known to exist and most people have never encountered one. One day, a deadly incident puts Kei Nagai too close to the reality of the Ajin.
Ajin is very dark, and it combines Horror, Mystery, and the Supernatural along with Suspense to create an anime that has you on the edge of your seat, asking a million questions and gasping at the bloody scenes and the greedy, violent, hateful sides of human beings. Nobody can blame you if you need a fix of blood, horror and the supernatural before the next episode comes out. That’s why we are presenting you with 6 other anime series along a similar vein as Ajin.
These series are either violent and bloody, or full of mystery, have a main character living with new found dark powers, show the darkest parts of humanity, or all of the above. So lock your door, turn off the lights and take a look at 6 anime like Ajin!
Similar Anime to Ajin
1. Kara no Kyoukai 1: Fukan Fuukei (The Garden of sinners Chapter 1: Overlooking View)
- Episodes: Movie
- Aired: Dec 2007
Set in the late 1990’s, a series of suicides occur in Japan which intrigue Mikiya Kokutou. As he’s investigating them, he also gets to know an unsociable girl named Shiki Ryougi, and realizes that they are somehow connected. Shiki comes from a line of demon hunters with special powers but is left in a coma after an accident. When she wakes up, she’s no longer herself and looks for answers by joining and assisting Mikiya in his investigations of the violent and supernatural deaths that keep taking place.
This might be the most subdued anime on this list. Shiki doesn’t necessarily die, but she is involved in an incident which changes her life, like Kei in Ajin. She does, however, have the power to kill anyone by using her “Mystic Eyes of Death perception”. Using a dark power, like Kei to defeat her opponents. Like Kei and Kaito, Shiki and Mikiya are reunited after a couple of years to team up against evil and work to find answers and try to stay alive. While not exactly like Ajin, Kara no Kyoukai is dark, full of death, mystery and demonic powers, what more can you ask for?

2. Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl)
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Oct 2005 – Apr 2006
The Jigoku Tsushin is a website where people can post grudges against people you dislike and the Hell Girl will literally torture them and drag them to hell. The girl is Ai Enma, who was buried alive along with her family as part of a sacrifice 400 years ago. Full of hate and resentment, she vows to hate the villagers forever and then becomes appointed the Hell Girl by the Master of Hell. She will forever be the messenger of people’s hate and resentment.
Hell Girl is a story of life after death. Kind of like Ajin, Ai gains her new evil powers after she is left for dead. Also, much like Kei is able to focus his hate and anger to get rid of those who chase or hurt him, Ai is able to do the same, but for others. There are horrible human aspects showcased in Hell Girl as well; violence, torture, insanity and of course, vengeance and the ability to rid the world of those people who according to our (anti) heroes deserve to die.

3. Blood +
- Episodes: 50
- Aired: Oct 2005 – Sep 2006
Over centuries, Chiropterans (vampire-like creatures) have been feeding on humans by disguising themselves as people. At the same time, there is an organization that hunts them, Red Shield. In this world, Saya Otonashi is an anemic amnesic high school girl who because of a life-changing encounter finds herself fighting the Chiropterans, which she was destined to do.
Much like Kei in Ajin, Saya doesn’t realize she is at all connected to these demonic creatures that people fear and which Red Shield is there to destroy. Understanding and getting used to her newly discovered power takes time, but she will use it to battle along with her partner Haiji. Though this one is also about vampires, it has evil creatures, blood (duh), and a normal kid who finds out they’re not normal at all and must learn about their true nature.

4. Shiki
- Episodes: 22
- Aired: Jul 2010 – Dec 2010
When Megumi Shimizu is the first to die in a bloody epidemic which then turns those affected into vampires, Dr Toshio Ozaki decides to look into the horrifying disease. However, he realizes that in order to find the truth and save the town of Sotoba, he will have to give up being human. Along with Yuki Natsuno, they face their new found humanity in order to face the Shiki and save the town.
In Shiki, like in Ajin, we have a species of altered human who are feared by the rest of society. While under different circumstances, the main characters in both shows become said creatures and must face the reality of it, all while battling those like them but who are on the side of evil. They must face the struggles of facing those who fear them along with a trusty partner. Shiki is also pretty bloody if that’s what you’re looking for.

5. Gantz
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Apr 2004 – Jun 2004
Kei Kurono and Katou Masaru are high school students who get hit by a train as they’re trying to save a drunk who had fallen onto the tracks. After dying, they both appear in a room with other recently deceased people and a big black sphere called GANTZ. They are now part of a game and are instructed to take a weapon and begin their new mission to eliminate aliens on Earth while fighting for points and their survival.
The biggest similarities between Gantz and Ajin are that the fun doesn’t start until the hero(s) die and that there is a team of two childhood friends who must now fight together to survive. Other than that, there are special powers, though they’re not evil, provided by the special powered suits given to the boys by Gantz. Like Ajin and other titles in this list, Gantz is pretty violent and bloody and shows all the ugliest traits of humanity.

6. Tokyo Ghoul
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul 2014 – Sep 2014
Tokyo has become inhabited by ghouls which are supernatural beings that blend in with society but enjoy murdering and eating humans. Ken Kaneki lives in Tokyo and meets Rize Kamishiro, but while on a date, she turns out to be a ghoul and out to dine on Kaneki. A well-timed accident kills Rize and sends Kaneki to the hospital where he receives some of Rize’s organs, making him a half-ghoul. Trapped in this reality and being a rare specimen, Kaneki must face himself and a million enemies.
Ajin has been considered to be “the new Tokyo Ghoul” so we couldn’t possibly leave it out of this list. And if you like Ajin, chances are you’ve already seen it. Tokyo Ghoul shows the struggles of a boy who is suddenly faced with becoming the most feared and hated creature in his world. He must control his demonic urges and abilities and faces persecution from both humans and monsters alike, much like Kei in Ajin. Although, while Kei only has one accomplice, (at least at the beginning) Kaneki counts with the help of Touka Kirishima and the rest of the Anteiku staff. It’s a little less dark than Ajin, but Tokyo Ghoul will certainly bring you a similar dose of violence, blood, torture and twisted sadists.

Conclusion
Well, there you have it. There should be enough in this list to make you wish you had a night light. It’s anime like this that prove it isn’t exclusively for kids. So next time someone says that to you, show them this list!
The classic combinations of human vs non-human, the struggle of a person who finds they are either no longer alive or no longer human; while these titles may be similar in ways, they are all different in their own right. And while nothing will be exactly like Ajin, they can give you a similar feeling when watching them.
I hope you enjoyed our list and hopefully you found something you haven’t seen but would love to watch while the next Ajin episode airs.
