Similar Anime to Kuroshitsuji / Similar Anime to Black Butler

1. Blood+

  • Episodes: 50
  • Aired: Oct. 2005-Sept. 2006

Saya Otonashi is your average young girl who is currently living her normal life. Until one night when she was suddenly attacked by a monster that feeds on human blood. There, she meets Hagi and was reawakened only to find out that she isn’t just your average girl but a vampire slayer with the sole purpose of defeating beasts that hide in every corner. As she takes her new destiny head on, she learns more about her forgotten past.

Blood+ is similar to Black Butler because of its master-servant relationship. Just as Ciel is the Earl of Phantomhive with Sebastian being his demon butler servant, Saya is known as the queen because of her pure blood lineage while Hagi is her so called knight. Sabastian and Hagi are very loyal to their masters and would do anything to protect them. Unlike Black Butler which has an episodic sequence, Blood+ tells its story in a fluid fashion.

If you love to see rich and captivating characters like Black Butler has, then look no further as Blood+ offers this in an excellent way. You bet after finishing Blood+, you will feel so attached to the characters and even mourn some characters that you thought you might have hated when you started the show. Both shows are supernatural and dark, so go watch this spectacular show.

2. Le Chevalier D’Eon (The Knight of Eon)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Jul. 2006-Feb. 2007

A historical anime based on 18th century France, D’Eon de Beaumont discovers that his dead sister’s body, which was in a casket, was floating around in the river Seine. His only clue as to who killed his twin sister is the bloody written word “Psalms” in her casket. Watch D’Eon as he takes it upon himself to uncover the secret behind his sister’s death along with his struggles during the French Revolution.

Just like Black Butler, Le Chevalier D’Eon is based on true historical events, but twisting them more with supernatural elements. Le Chevalier D’Eon is an anime that centers around betrayal, revenge, faith and dark morality, themes it shares with Black Butler. Just like Ciel who works for Queen Victoria as the Guard Dog of England, D’Eon works as a knight under King Louis XV in maintaining peace within France. As the series goes deeper and darker at every turn, both Ciel and D’Eon will find clues and hints as to why their loved ones have been murdered mercilessly.

On the surface, Black Butler and Le Chevalier D’Eon almost seem very alike due to its same vibes they radiate, but Black Butler actually takes more of a dark humor approach while Le Chevalier D’Eon takes the more serious grotesque approach. These two anime relied on historical events and religious symbolism which is sometimes incomprehensible when you are not well informed.

3. D. Gray-Man

  • Episodes: 103
  • Aired: Oct. 2006-Sept. 2008

D. Gray-man follows the story of Allen Walker as he becomes an exorcist under the Black Order. His mission along with his companions is to seek and destroy Akuma that the Millennium Earl has produced in order to wipe out the world. In his journey as an exorcist, he gathers innocence, which is important in destroying the Akuma. Allen soon realizes that he is not only fighting the Millenium Earl but also the dangerous Noah Family.

If the Victorian Era is to your liking, then you should go check out D. Gray-man. It presents you with the question whether light connotates good? Or is dark always evil? Each character is very complex along with the mysteries the show presents. Adding to that, both of the protagonists in their respective shows have a unique set of eyes. Ciel has the symbol of his Faustian contract with Sebastian while with Allen has a cursed eye due to the scars left by the reverse pentacle.

Both series have gothic and occult themes that encompass demons and angels. The execution from comedy to action with its dark themes is amazing and feels natural. Although they might not be similar as a whole, the feel and the atmosphere that D. Gray-man exhibits will remind you of Black Butler. D. Gray-man will surely be on the top of your list so go ahead and binge watch it and you might even catch up to its anticipated sequel D. Gray-man Hollow, which is currently airing.

4. Noblesse Awakening

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: Feb. 2016

Cadis Etrama di Raizel wakes up from his 820-year slumber. As he awakens, he discovers a lot of things have changed during his disappearance. He shows up in front of his loyal servant Frankenstein and starts a new life as a high school student. His peaceful days are soon halted when a group of people is out to get him and his new found friends.

The anime was short and it definitely gave us the feeling of wanting more. As with other selections in here, it shows the Master-servant relationship of the Noblesse Rai and his calculating servant Frankenstein. Having the same supernatural themes as Black Butler, Noblesse’s world has Vampires as opposed to Black Butler’s Angels and Demons. Frankenstein and Sebastian are powerful, fulfilling their duties with grace and elegance.

The action in both shows is spectacular to look at and even though they display a dark premise, it never fails to at least insert a perfectly funny sequence to make the dark show a bit lighter. Noblesse is a good short watch so go ahead and watch it in LINE Webtoon’s official YouTube page and hopefully be enticed to read the original Korean webtoon/manhwa. With Production I.G. being the studio handling this, the animation of this one will leave you in awe. If you’re wanting for more, you can also watch its prequel Noblesse: Pamyeol-ui Sijak which is made by a Korean production team, Studio Animal.

5. Makai Ouji: Devils & Realist (Devils & Realist)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2013-Sept. 2013

William Twining is from a prestigious family and has a high intellect like no other. However, he soon learns that he was left with nothing except for a house when his uncle fled because of having a failed business. Not wanting to destroy his noble name and his bright future, he searches his home to find money, only to stumble into a hidden room. As soon as he opens the door, he accidentally summons a demon named Dantalion, who asks William to make him the interim ruler as Lucifer is in his slumber. The demon tells William that he is the “Elector” and the descendant of Solomon. William, being a realist that relies only on scientific methods, refuses to believe what Dantalion is saying.

The protagonist alone has great similarities to Black Butler’s main lead. William Twining is an arrogant and intelligent character from a noble lineage whose parents were killed. Sounds familiar right? Just like the presumptions Ciel Phantomhive. Let us even include the fact William and Ciel have strong supernatural beings at their command/disposal. The two main leads are fairly weak when it comes to fighting and only rely on their servants, but both of them are the real masters of the game because of their cunning minds.

These two shows are very much alike with only some minor details being different here and there. To start off, even if they are both filled with mystery, what they are trying to seek answers for is in contrast. Ciel is solving mystery after mystery to get closer to the people who have disgraced him, William on the other hand, is forcefully pulled along to discover who he really is and the mystery behind those around him. Go ahead, watch this and question yourself once more, are angels the righteous ones or are the demons instead?

6. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro (Neuro: Supernatural Detective)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct. 2007-Mar. 2008

Being hungry can be quite a problem to anyone, especially when you are a demon. The demon Neuro Nogami has eaten every mystery in the demon world. Hungry for more, he goes to the human realm seeking the greatest mystery that will fill his stomach. As he is a demon and therefore must not be noticed by humans, he makes a pact with Yuko Katsuragi to be his investigator in disguise and him as her assistant in disguise. Together they solve mysteries after mysteries to fill Neuro’s large appetite.

If you are a fan of solving mysteries, then you surely wouldn’t want to miss Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. In our previous selection, Ciel and William had great similarities between the two, this time, however, it’s Neuro and Sebastian. Demons by nature, they are highly skilled in everything they do, especially when there are things that must be solved. They are devilish, sadistic, cold, and indifferent. The only difference between these two is their taste when it comes to food. Neuro likes to eat negative energies in a human after a good mystery while Sebastian is your typical demon who likes to eat human souls.

Neuro and Yako are partners because of their contract just like Ciel formed a deal with Sebastian. Funnily enough, it would seem like Yako is the servant while Neuro is the master and just like Sebastian, Neuro likes to tease his contractor. Nonetheless, Neuro protects and helps Yako when she is in need just like how Sebastian does to Ciel. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro is the modern day reflection of Black Butler. Having dark humor, complicated puzzles, and compelling characters at its core, Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro will never disappoint you.

Kuroshitsuji, also known as Black Butler, is a black comedy anime with fantasy and a lot of mysteries. The story is pretty dark but also quite funny, mostly because some characters are completely disturbed. The historical setting and the past of the characters are really catchy, even if the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian can be seen quite disturbing sometimes.

I actually watched this first of all because of the casting. Then I realized the plot was actually pretty good and the different crimes that are solved are really interesting. And while you're watching, you just can't help wanting to know what will happen to Ciel and his famous curse.

There is a lot of pretty dark anime and also a lot of mysterious ones, so if you don't know what to watch after Kuroshitsuji, here is a list which should help you to choose !

With the help of Alice, a being of the Abyss, he successfully goes back to his world and realizes that time didn't flow the same in both worlds for years have passed when he returns.

Back in his world and with the help of his servant, Gil, and some others, Oz has to figure out what crime he committed for being sent into the Abyss and how it is strangely linked with the forgotten past of Alice.

This anime was really interesting because of all the mysteries and fantasy. Anyone who likes psychological thrillers should like this one ! Pandora Hearts setting is pretty the same as Kuroshitsuji and with Gil following and protecting Oz everywhere they go, you can see the same relationship as the one of Ciel and Sebastian.

2. 07-Ghost

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Apr 2009 – Sept 2009

Teito Klein is a former slave who is now attending the Barsburg Empire's military academy because he finds out he has the ability to use a rare and supernatural power called the Zaiphon. Teito is amnesic and doesn't remember anything from his past, except for some frightening nightmares which wake him up at night.

The day of the final exam of the academy, Teito meets the Chief of staff, Ayanami, and he realizes he is the man he's always seeing in his dreams and who killed his father, right in front of him. Teito then remembers he was living in the Kingdom of Raggs, of which his father was the king. Because Teito tries to attack Ayanami, he is captured, and his only friend Mikage helps him to escape. Teito then found shelter in a church in the nearby 7th District where three bishops give him protection.

This series is pretty catchy because of the characters, specially Teito, who tries to remember his past and learn the truth of what happened the day his father died. His relationship with Mikage, first of all, then Frau can be assimilated with Ciel and Sebastian, even if their personalities cannot be associated. Also, Teito's quest for discovering the truth and avenging his father's murder makes him quite similar to Ciel.

Battler is rejecting the nature and existence of Beatrice and challenges her in order to prove that magic doesn't exist. He will then try to solve and explain every crime that occurred on the Rokkenjima island without magic in order to beat Beatrice.

This one is not really like Kuroshitsuji, but if you like supernatural bloody anime, this is just for you! With a lot of mysteries and its psychological thriller aspect, anyone can be caught by this anime. The complexity of the characters make it similar through. Battler's past is far more mysterious than you can think and, even if he doesn't realise it himself, it is linked to Beatrice in a strange way he will need to remember to discover the truth.

The mysteries around Victorique are pretty deep. Kazuya initially think about her as a muppet and she has some aspects who don't seems human. Also, there is a strong mystery about her mother and the reason she was born.

The setting place is pretty similar to Kuroshitsuji. Victorique is technically not allowed to leave the academy so Kazuya has to follow her everywhere, protecting her when it's necessary. Victorique is really mysterious and when she solves a crime, she keeps saying that the “Fountain of Wisdom” told her the truth. She is considered dangerous because of her origins, especially because of her mother. You can't help wondering about her past, so I really advice this one !
