Both Macross Delta and Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu have the same type of sci-fi setting in space. While Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu has a more central focus on the politics behind their war, Macross Delta centers on the mecha pilots fighting on the frontlines. 3. Grancrest Senki (Record of Grancrest War)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Jan. 2018 – ongoing

In Grancrest Senki, Lords have the power to protect people through the seals they command. But with chaos spreading more throughout the land, the Lords have been spending more time fighting one another than dispelling this tide. Siluca is a mage who holds disdain for the Lords, as she believes they have not done enough for their land and its people. Theo is a young knight, who seeks to one day liberate his hometown from the chaos spreading across the land. When the two meet, they realize their two quests align with one another. Joining forces, Siluca and Theo set out to reform their land. Will they be able to prevent chaos from taking over the continent?

Grancrest Senki is similar to Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu in its scale of military combat. A combination of politics and battles, these two anime also share a wide range of characters to get to know. Both shows have characters that rely on strategy in their military tactics as well. Though she is a mage, Siluca uses her smarts to help Theo’s forces overcome great odds. And in their own respects, Reinhard von Musel and Yang Wen Li do much the same for their own militia. Though it is a different setting than Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, Grancrest Senki is a tale of great battles and heroic actions!

4. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt

  • Episodes: 4
  • Aired: Dec. 2015 – Apr. 2016

Unfortunately for Daryl, Io manages to get a hold on a prototype Gundam suit! To defeat such a foe, Daryl will have to make sacrifices to protect both his comrades and his own honor. Who will come out on top in this war?

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt and Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu are similar in many respects. With the same sort of tones, these two anime have a similar style of story as well, with two characters on the opposite sides of conflict facing off against one another. Both shows also feature the same sci-fi setting in space, where many battles take place. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt features more individual fighting sequences, as it focuses on mecha. Meanwhile, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is more about the strategic movement of a large militia. That being said, both anime use the main characters to move mountains in their respective wars. If you like any of the other Gundam shows, this is one you should not miss!

5. Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Apr. 2013 – June 2013

During humanity’s trek across the universe, they have encountered dangerous creatures called Hideauze. A 16-year-old lieutenant named Ledo has joined the fight to prevent humanity’s extinction, along with his A.I. robot Chamber. But during a battle, Ledo loses control, ending up stranded on a water-logged and mostly abandoned Earth. He soon encounters a large fleet of scavenger ships, called Gargantia, and finds himself living alongside them as they traverse the mysteries of the blue planet.

Though Suisei no Gargantia begins with warfare in space, it does spend much of its time on a planet. That being said, this anime’s action-packed sci-fi adventures feel very similar to that of Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. As is true of many of the anime on our list, Suisei no Gargantia is focused on the mecha aspects of battle, staying with a few characters individually rather than a widespread battlefield. Suisei no Gargantia is a bit calmer than Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu as well, with less strategic information coming at you. However, Ledo and his comrades are just as enjoyable to watch as the commanders in The Legend of the Galactic Heroes!

6. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2015 – June 2015

When a mysterious virus begins killing everyone over the age of 13, vampires rise up, enslaving what little is left of humanity and draining blood in return for protection. Two such survivors are Mikaela and Yuuichirou Hyakuya, along with the rest of the children from their orphanage. Mikaela decides to escape from captivity with the rest of the children, coming up with a daring escape plan to get them all out. Unfortunately, only Yuuichirou manages to escape alive in the end, soon after under the protection of a militia fighting against the vampires. Several years later, Yuuichirou is ready to fight with the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, vowing to get revenge on the vampires who took his family away from him.

Owari no Seraph may seem drastically different from Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu on the surface. The two anime have completely opposite themes, though action-packed warfare does integrate into both. Yet, even as Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu has strategic and dramatic fights, so does Owari no Seraph! In both series, two characters on opposite sides of the fight control the fates of their comrades as they try to out-play the other side. If you’re looking for an anime with the same story basis, Owari no Seraph is a great choice, even with the change from a space setting.

Final Thoughts

The anime on our list are some of the best when it comes to strategic space combat! Though some of our choices might seem vastly different, they all share a common theme of characters on both sides of a conflict trying to outplay one another. This kind of intelligence is difficult to find, yet it seems each of the anime on our list have a character capable of such creative, yet logical, thinking.
