6 Anime Like Hangyakusei Million Arthur (Operation Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur) [Recommendations]

Anime is a great adaptive medium due to the fact that it can draw from multiple different kinds of sources much like film and TV can. However, anime’s true malleability as a medium shines through immensely when you consider how often entire anime series are created for the sole purpose of adapting a videogame or better yet, promoting one! Hangyakusei Million Arthur is one such show, used to promote the MMORPG iteration of the long list of Million Arthur games! Looking for something similar? Look no further, we’ve got six of the best, just for you!

Similar Anime to Hangyakusei Million Arthur

1. Last Period: Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari (Last Period: The Journey to the End of The Despair)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2018 – June 2018

“Period”, the name given to magic users who beat monsters called Spirals, are summoned from isolation. However, their increased presence calls for the deployment of a 14-year-old apprentice Period named Haru, who is part of the Eighth Arc-end Division. Unfortunately, an unforeseen theft sees the Division sunken into bankruptcy, forcing Haru and her comrades to leave headquarters and begin searching for quests to complete so that they can one day have a Division branch of their own.

Like Hangyakusei Million Arthur, Last Period is based in a fantasy-type setting with characters of various classes and skills. Hangyakusei Million Arthur and Last Period share similar development stories in that they were adapted from mobile games and as such, can act as extra promotion for their respective game series. An extra similarity is the art styles, which could be attributed to the fact that both series are animated by J.C.Staff.

2. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?)

Survival is never guaranteed down there, but Bell is determined to make his dream a reality and make Hestia proud.

DanMachi’s approach is quite akin to Hangyakusei Million Arthur in the fantasy setting, although one could say DanMachi develops that aspect differently. DanMachi’s world is laid out very much like a fantasy RPG and with Hangyakusei Million Arthur being based on an MMORPG of the same name, the similarities between both shows are apparent.

3. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2016 – March 2016

A group of youths find themselves thrown into a foreign land with no knowledge of how they got there, who they are or what they are there to do. Trapped in this game-like world, they have to survive and accept the only paying-job – becoming a soldier in the Reserve Army, protecting the peace of the world of Grimgar. Despite the sheer similarity to a game, this world is just as unforgiving as the real world and death is just as permanent.

The similarity between Hangyakusei Million Arthur and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash that is immediately recognisable are the fantasy RPG elements that inspire both. Both worlds are akin to these games and like these games, each character has their own defined role as per their class. Several Hangyakusei Million Arthur characters are named after their classes, which makes relating them to Grimgar characters a matter of simple comparison.

4. Rokka no Yuusha (Braves of the Six Flowers)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 – September 2015

Upon the revival of the Demon God, six heroes known as the Braves of the Six Flowers will be chosen by the God of Fate, which grants them the power to rise against the demonic forces. Adlet Mayer, the self-proclaimed “Strongest Man in the World” arrives in the land of Piena hoping to become one of the Braves and after some struggle, he is eventually selected after an interaction with Princess Nashetania Loei Piena Augustra, a fellow Brave. The two embark on a journey to meet the other heroes and eventually battle the Demon God, but upon congregating, they realise that there are seven Braves and suspect Adlet to be a fraud. Now Adlet must find a way to identify who the real imposter is before it is too late.

With a lofty goal like defeating the Demon God, Rokka no Yuusha is similar to Hangyakusei Million Arthur’s quest for its characters, which entails destroying the various Excalibur blades which distort history. Both sets of characters are hence trying to undo major damage caused by an inhuman threat. Like Rokka no Yuusha, there are six heroes in Hangyakusei Million Arthur who must pull together to accomplish their mission.

5. Dog Days

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2011 – June 2011

In the world of Flonyard, an alternate Earth where humans with animal ears reside, the Republic of Biscotti is a union of dog-like people which is under attack by the cat forces of the Galette Leo Knights. In an attempt to save her country, Princess Millhiore summons a champion from another world. Out bursts Izumi Cinque, a junior high schooler who agrees to save Biscotti, retrieving a sacred weapon known as the Palladion. In Flonyard, war has no casualties and instead, the warring factions participate in sports competitions to raise money for their respective countries. While Cinque performs his job as a hero well, he soon realises that heroes are unable to return to their home worlds. Until they can figure something out, Cinque serves Princess Millhiore and the Republic of Biscotti.

Like Hangyakusei Million Arthur, Dog Days is set in a world that has several fantasy elements, although the nature of these elements is different for both shows. Dog Days draws this from its “isekai” nature, which is to describe a plot device involving a character whisked away to a different world. The concept of heroes is also shared by both shows, with Million Arthur’s various Arthurs serving the combined cause of a single protagonist.

6. Senyuu. (Senyu)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: January 2013 – April 2013

When the Demon Lord Rchimedes spread terror across the world, he was eventually sealed away by the legendary hero Creason. A thousand years pass without incident, but a mysterious hole opened up between the demon and human realms and as a result, demons have begun their onslaught once again. Realising that Rchimedes could possibly return, a human king decides to summon the 75 descendants of Creason, but after such a long time, it’s incredibly difficult to find his true descendants. Alba Fruhling is one of these descendants, accompanied by Ross, his talented companion who usually helps Alba when he is in a pinch. However, Ross is quite the sadist, revelling in Alba’s suffering. Despite this, the two of them go on a journey to defeat the Demon Lord.

Hangyakusei Million Arthur and Senyuu have great similarities in how they’re both presented in fantasy-type worlds. Another similarity lies in how both series have multiple main characters who are invested in the same goal. In Senyuu, Alba and Ross are looking to defeat the Demon Lord while the six Arthurs are looking to destroy the Excalibur blades which distort the course of history.

I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
