6 Anime Like Isekai Cheat Magician [Recommendations]

Beaming onto our screens in the Summer season of 2019 is the isekai title, Isekai Cheat Magician, an anime about high schoolers who are whisked off to a fantasy world. The premise is not brand new to most of us as isekai is a genre with many exports every single year. Enough about that, more about the titles that are just like Isekai Cheat Magician!

Similar Anime to Isekai Cheat Magician

1. Kenja no Mago (Wise Man’s Grandchild)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2019 – June 2019

Merlin Walford was once a national hero of the kingdom of Earlshide. He moves to the woods to lead a quiet life of seclusion to raise an orphan he saved. Shin, the reincarnation of a salaryman in Japan, made it to Merlin’s world with his memories intact. As he grows up, Shin exhibits incredible magical talent and develops excellent combat prowess. However, when he turns 15, it becomes painfully obvious that his social side has not been developed and he is an awkward mess lacking in common sense. Shin enrols in the Magic Academy in order to lead a normal teenage life and hone his skills; however, he is regarded as a celebrity almost immediately. As he experiences school life, he makes new friends, grows and combats evil.

Much like Isekai Cheat Magician, Kenja no Mago features a protagonist incarnating in another world and possessing incredible abilities. From that perspective, the two shows are incredibly similar, despite the fact that Kenja no Mago is about a protagonist who died before getting to the other world, while Isekai Cheat Magician features a protagonist-pairing who fall into the same situation through other means.

2. Maou-sama, Retry! (Demon Lord, Retry!)

Much like Isekai Cheat Magician, Maou-sama, Retry! happens in a world that is fundamentally foreign to the main character. Both feature protagonists who are well-known for their incredible strength and have a desire to live a life with minimal drama. Both anime are centred on the journeys of a particular pair of characters who spend most of their time together.

4. Tsuujou Kougeki wa Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaa-san wa Suki Desu ka? (Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2019 – September 2019

Masato’s life changes forever after he participates in a random survey at school one day. It turns out that the survey was a government scheme and as a result, Masato ends up being transported to the world of a video game. With his mother caught in the same situation, Masato ends up embarking on an adventure in a fantasy world with his mother and they make some friends along the way.

Both Okaa-san Online and Isekai Cheat Magician feature a pair of protagonists who have known each other for a significant amount of time. Both are also similar in how they are both isekai anime adapted from light novels, as well as in their fantasy setting. The difference here is the fact that Masato and his mother end up in the world of a video game while Rin and Taichi from Isekai Cheat Magician end up in a non-game alternate world.

5. Death March kara Hajimaru Kyousoukyoku (Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2018 – March 2018

Suzuki Ichirou is a programmer reaching his thirties and worn out from doing so much work. He takes a nap only to wake up in a fantasy world much like an RPG, one which is an amalgamation of all the games he was debugging for his job. He has also become a younger version of himself and he assumes the name he’d use while beta testing: Satou. As soon as he arrives in this world, he is attacked by an army of lizardmen, but he quickly dispatches them with a powerful spell. The fight boosts him to level 310 and his stats are maxed out. With his newfound strength, Satou explores his new surroundings.

We are again presented with the basic premise of isekai – a character is whisked away to a foreign world and forced to adapt. Much like with Isekai Cheat Magician, the main character finds himself to be heavily overpowered in this new realm and spends his time journeying and meeting other characters. The difference lies in the fact that Death March involves a game world and Isekai Cheat Magician features a world akin to that of a game but it is not one.

6. Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria (The Master of Ragnarok and the Blesser of Einherjar)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2018 – September 2018

Suou Yuuto ends up being transported to another world when he tests out an urban legend. Taking a photo of himself with the local shrine’s divine mirror, he suddenly finds himself in a world steeped in Norse myth. All he has to his advantage in this new world is his knowledge and his solar-powered smartphone, and he uses these to raise the status of the Wolf Clan, who were once his caretakers. While working towards this goal, he gathers the attention of magic-wielding warrior women known as the Einherjar.

With the same basic formula as the other titles on this list, Einherjar is similar to Isekai Cheat Magician for the fact that they are both isekai titles. Over and above that; however, they feature main characters who have a definite advantage over the other characters. Yuuto quickly rises to prominence within the Wolf Clan much like Rin and Taichi rise to prominence within the Guild.

Final Thoughts

Isekai is a saturated genre and there are endless titles to choose from. Many of these shows are adapted from light novels and so there is a plethora of different kinds of isekai, different settings and even different kinds of main characters. Isekai Cheat Magician employed an aspect making itself more and more prominent in recent times – the overpowered protagonist. Do you know of other shows that could have made it to this list? I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
