1. Isekai Cheat Magician

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2019 – September 2019

Rin and Taichi are high school students who disappear in a beam of light. When they come to, they find themselves in a fantasy world of magic, monsters and adventures. As soon as they arrive, they are attacked by a swarm of monsters, but they manage to survive it and they head over to the guild – a place where adventurers gather. When they arrive, they find out that they possess incredibly powerful magic and they’re quickly identified as the guild’s greatest cheat codes.

Just like Okaa-san Online, Isekai Cheat Magician is an Isekai anime, meaning that it features characters who are transported to another world. While Rin and Taichi find themselves in a fantasy world, Masato and Mamako are in a video game. Much like Rin and Taichi, Mamako is ridiculously powerful, which in both cases, is the intention of the show from the very beginning.

2. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (How Not to Summon a Demon Lord)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2018 – September 2018

The Demon King Diablo is the strongest character in the entire world of the fantasy MMORPG Cross Reverie. Possessing the game’s most powerful artefacts and the highest player level, he bulldozes through anyone foolish enough to confront him. In reality; however, Diablo is just shut-in gamer Sakamoto Takuma, a guy with virtually no social skills. Caring about nothing other than his virtual life, Takuma’s mundane life continues until he is transported to another world via a summoning spell and to cap it all off, he’s there with Diablo’s appearance! This new world resembles that of Cross Reverie and soon he’s confronted with two girls responsible for his new surroundings – Rem Galeu, an adventurer and her elven companion, Shera L. Greenwood. They attempt to perform an enslavement ritual on Diablo but it backfires, making them his slaves instead. Having to stick to the role given to him, Takuma accompanies the girls on their quest to unbind their contract while staying in character as the dangerous Diablo.

The main similarity How Not to Summon a Demon Lord has with Okaa-san Online is the fact that they’re both Isekai variants. Both sets of protagonists are transported into the world of a videogame, or one that greatly resembles a video game. Just like Mamako, Diablo, or Takuma, is super powerful and sweeps through opponents and obstacles with complete ease.

3. Kenja no Mago (Wise Man’s Grandchild)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2019 – June 2019

Merlin Walford was once a national hero of the kingdom of Earlshide. He moves to the woods to lead a quiet life of seclusion to raise an orphan he saved. Shin, the reincarnation of a salaryman in Japan, made it to Merlin’s world with his memories intact. As he grows up, Shin exhibits incredible magical talent and develops excellent combat prowess. However, when he turns 15, it becomes painfully obvious that his social side has not been developed and he is an awkward mess lacking in common sense. Shin enrols in the Magic Academy in order to lead a normal teenage life and hone his skills; however, he is regarded as a celebrity almost immediately. As he experiences school life, he makes new friends, grows and combats evil.

Much like Okaa-san Online, the concept of parental guidance comes up in Kenja no Mago. In the same fashion as Okaa-san Online, Kenja no Mago presents us a main character who is incredibly powerful; although, the difference is that the story follows the child and not necessarily the parent. Both anime feature fantasy elements; however, Okaa-san Online’s presentation of these elements is within the bounds of a videogame.

4. Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku (Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2018 – March 2018

Suzuki Ichirou is a programmer reaching his thirties and worn out from doing so much work. He takes a nap only to wake up in a fantasy world much like an RPG, one which is an amalgamation of all the games he was debugging for his job. He has also become a younger version of himself and he assumes the name he’d use while beta testing: Satou. As soon as he arrives in this world, he is attacked by an army of lizardmen, but he quickly dispatches them with a powerful spell. The fight boosts him to level 310 and his stats are maxed out. With his newfound strength, Satou explores his new surroundings.

Overpowered main characters and videogames are the themes that tie Parallel World Rhapsody and Okaa-san Online together. Mamako’s incredible strength can be compared to that of Satou within his own world. Both sets of main characters are trapped in a video game, although Mamako and Masato know exactly how to break free, not to mention the conditions behind their situation are completely different to that of Ichirou.

5. Overlord

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2015 – September 2015

The once-popular online virtual reality game, Yggdrasil, is in its final hour. Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown decides to spend the final moments in the game as servers begin to shut down. However, to his surprise, he finds himself still logged into the game despite the servers being shut down and even more surprising is how he has become fully conscious as his character while non-player characters have seemingly developed personalities of their own! Stuck in this strange situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and assume control of this new world in hopes of someday figuring out what happened and if there are others experiencing what he is.

Overlord and Okaa-san Online are pretty much the same concept stretched in different directions. Both anime are about characters stuck in a videogame. While Okaa-san Online doesn’t take itself too seriously and is more about the relationship between Masato and his mother, Overlord is more about Momonga coming into his own as Ainz Ooal Gown, donning the persona in the midst of his strange situation. Mamako and Ainz are both also incredibly powerful and brush aside their opponents with ease.

6. Maou-sama, Retry! (Demon Lord, Retry!)

  • Episodes: Ongoing
  • Aired: July 2019 – Ongoing

Oono Akira is a Game Manager for Infinity Game. While logged in one day, Akira is transported to the world of the game and dons the body of his in-game persona, Demon Lord Kunai Hakuto. He then meets Aku, a girl with a troubled past and they begin travelling together; however, the incredible strength of the Demon Lord attracts many enemies and so Akira must thwart the attempts of entire countries looking to defeat the Demon Lord!

Like Okaa-san Online, Maou-sama, Retry! features a super powerful main character who is trapped in a videogame. While Mamako and Masato are trapped so long as they have distance in their relationship, Akira seems to be caught in Infinity Game, well, infinitely. The two shows are also similar in how they both have an incredibly powerful character travelling with another – Masato and his mom are parallels to Hakuto and Aku.

I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
