Isekai stories are all the rage nowadays. These shows feature protagonists uprooted from their humble beginnings and thrust into a world out of our wildest fantasies. No matter who they start as or where they end up, it’s always refreshing to see them change to adapt to their environment, much like the audience imagines they themselves would. But leaving behind everything and everyone you know is hard. Especially when we spend so much of our lives glued to our cell phones. Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni is a show that finally addresses this issue head on, and makes the device an integral part of the story.
Mochizuki Touya was your typical Japanese teenager, but unfortunately for him, God killed him on accident. Everybody makes mistakes, but having the creator himself owe you a favor is on a whole nother level. To make up for Touya’s untimely demise, God reincarnates him in another world, much like one would find straight out of medieval fantasy. His only request is that he be allowed to bring his smartphone, which God allows, with a few modifications. Thus begins Touya’s new life as an overpowered, technologically advanced MC in a world that is teeming with magic.
Although everything in this world is new to Mochizuki Touya, we in the real world have been watching anime for quite a bit. As a harem comedy series, the girls are numerous and all of them have their sights set on Touya. Being basically God’s new chosen in a world devoid of overpowered badasses, it’s really to be expected. If you like this show, then you’re gonna love these. To do this, he enrolls at the Magic Academy which Lilith teaches at, and learns that he must seek the aid of the other girls in the Trinity Seven to master his powers and save his friend.
Much like Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni, there’s a lot of harem-related comedy. Like Touya, Arata himself is an exceptionally gifted person learning to control his own abilities. They both have not truly tapped the depth of their power, but what has been displayed has left their harems speechless multiple times. Touya’s harem so far hasn’t quite reached seven girls yet, but at the rate things are going, he’s not far from it!

- Aired: Jan. 2016 - Mar. 2016
Satou Kazuma had no job, no education and barely ever left his home, but that didn’t stop him from risking it all to save someone he thought was in trouble. Unfortunately, she wasn’t, and he died embarrassing himself, adding insult to the ultimate injury. The goddess Aqua mocks him all the while, revealing the events of the world after his death, but gives him a chance to return to his old life. All he has to do is defeat the Demon Lord of another world, and he can take any one thing with him to aid him in his quest. Instead of picking an ability or weapon, in his exasperation, he chooses Aqua herself, and the two are stuck together until his task is complete. Joining him on his quest are two equally troublesome girls to add to his difficulties. Darkness, a masochist whose gluttony for pain is only matched by her sense of chivalry, and Megumin, a crimson demon that can only blow things up once per day. It’s anything but smooth sailing for this unlucky Isekai protagonist.
Although Touya and Kazuma’s deaths are different, they’re both sent to other worlds by the intervention of a god. Touya’s is just a lot more dignified and helpful than Kazuma’s. While Kazuma’s and Touya’s abilities are leagues apart, they both quickly gain renown for their acts. Touya by healing the duke’s wife, and even saving the king himself from assassination. Kazuma has defeated the incredibly powerful minions of the Demon Lord, despite adding even more useless girls to his entourage. However, stealing panties just adds to Kazuma’s infamy, more than his heroic deeds adding to his fame like Touya. If you want to see a main character sticking it out in a new world, Konosuba is a show that will consistently provide big laughs.

Throughout the series, Subaru uses this ability to save many others, as he tries to uncover the mystery of his power and how he came to this strange fantasy world.
Both Touya and Subaru are newcomers to a strange land and incapable of completely explaining their circumstances. For Touya, telling the people he meets that he was sent by God from Japan is simply awkward, but Subaru is physically incapable due to the Witch’s curse. One way the two are very similar is that they’re unwilling to compromise their sense of ethics despite their circumstances. Touya wishes to help everyone and is earnest in using his abilities. Subaru, despite often being faced with situations and elements he’s not used to, composes himself for the best outcome possible. If seeing a protagonist with nerves of steel interests you, Re:Zero has you covered.

4. Outbreak Company
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2013 - Dec. 2013
Kanou Shinichi was down on his luck after getting rejected by his childhood friend when he asked her out. While searching for a job online, he came across a strange ad asking for otaku. After nailing the interview process, he awoke in a parallel fantasy world. The Japanese government has now tasked him with bringing otaku culture to this world, and he is more than willing to oblige.
Both Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni and Outbreak Company are harem comedies with heavy fantasy elements. Shinichi's harem includes his half elf maid, his fujoshi SDF handler, a dog eared-girl, and a tsundere loli princess. Just like when Touya introduced Shogi to the inhabitants of his world, everyone is becoming enthralled with Shinichi and his cultural teachings. Both shows demonstrate that despite the distance, cultural entertainment can transcend all barriers.

When a mysterious chess game promises them a worthy challenge, they accept, and are whisked away to the fantasy game-based world of Disboard. The god Tet has summoned them to unite all the races of the world to challenge him to the ultimate chess match.
Both NGNL and Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni feature overpowered protagonists. Sora and Shiro were the best gamers in their world, and since Disboard is a massive game with real implications, they dominate it as well. Like Touya, they opted to bring not only their cell phones but tablet and other technology as well. They definitely know the importance of modern convenience!

Being a normal high school student, Izumi is more or less surprised to see a world filled with kemonomimi, animal eared people. But he’s driven to help them win while finding a way for him to return to Japan.
Like Touya, Cinque is making the most out of an unexpected situation. They both encounter animal people in their new worlds, and both stand out amongst the inhabitants for their exceptional abilities. Both Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni and Dog Days have a light-hearted feel and bright, colorful style to them. Both shows feature main characters who are getting by and having fun while doing so.
Final Thoughts
It’s pretty hard to imagine going to the store without having our smartphones, so being transported to another world is completely out of the question. It’s good that a show like Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni takes this into account and finally has a protagonist with his mind in the right place. I’m sure Touya can sympathize with Itami Youji from GATE, who is forced to slowly read web novels from the other side. If Kazuma had Touya’s cheat ability to make anything with magic, he’d probably be an even more hardcore NEET than he was in Japan.
