Tokyo Ghoul looks at the city from a corrupt and merciless perspective, as vicious evil creatures called ghouls now exist alongside humans. Ken unfortunately meets his demise when he is confronted by a ghoul he knew, leading him down a dark path of uncertainty. After he awakens and sees the outcome of the previous event, he now realizes he has transformed into a half ghoul, half-human and must now find a way to blend in with the evil corrupt community.

They both were taken out of their comfort zone without permission, which led them into a chaotic and bloodthirsty atmosphere where they need to come up with the right solutions to survive. Every direction they head in is full of mystery, as the enemy is always tracking down their every move with the intent to erase them from existence. Strategy, planning, and outmaneuvering their opponents is how the two must survive, otherwise they run a huge risk of being outplayed by the opposition. Both shows are a game of chess, where each step you make can only lead you closer to the check mate so everything matters.

2. Pupa

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 10, 2014 - March 28, 2014

After succumbing to the full effects of Pupa, Yume undergoes a eerie transformation into a monstrous creature with an rapacious desire for flesh; Utsutsu, on the other hand, is only partially affected, gaining the incredible power to regenerate at will. Ensuring to keep the promise he made to himself years ago, Utsutsu is willing to sacrifice everything in order to always be there for his little sister. Pupa tells the story of a loving brother's desperate attempts to save his sister, while protecting the world from her uncontrollable hunger.

The great similarity between the two is how both enemies have the unquenchable thirst for blood, and must devour other humans in order to survive. Yume and Utsutsu have to use their abilities to survive, even if it means to eating other people. Izumi's enemy have that very same ability as the aliens that burrow into a body must eat other humans to maintain their energy, and grow in strength. Both shows leave you questioning what could possibly happen, as each scene leads you down an uncertain road, and the enemy always planting different traps to throw you off. It shows us cannibalism in the extreme extent, which is just a reflection of how our own reality must cope with these sorts of problems on a daily basis.

3. Shinsekai Yori

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: September 29, 2012 - March 23, 2013

Shinsekai yori tells a fascinating story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in a Utopian based world. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and twisted truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new corrupt world.

Two opposing factions are neck and neck with eachother, as one tries to outsmart the other in a battle for supremacy. Izumi and Saki are thrown into uncharted territory where they must now face the shocking reality that lies in front of them. The premise of both stories are that each main character must confront a challenge, and each new one presents a much higher difficulty than the last. Certain scenes throughout both shows blur the line between what's good or bad, and so the viewer is drawn into these events along with the protagonist. Both anime question the judgment of the two characters, but also leave you scratching your head as to what you would do in that very moment.

4. Kemonozume

  • Aired: August 5, 2006 - November 5, 2006

A race of cannibal monsters called the Shokujinki exists and it is the job of the Kifuuken, an elite group of beast-hunters, to stop them. Kemonozume explores a territory that most find very gruesome and inhumane. The truth is that this type of ruthless behavior exists in our reality, and has existed throughout our life span. Cannibalism is the act in which one human thrives off the flesh of another human, in order to survive. In both shows, there exists a race of monsters that have come to Earth to feed on unsuspecting prey, and to take control over the human race. Toshihiko much like Izumi, come across these monsters on a daily basis, and at some point must build relationships with a few in order to survive. Their lives become a race in order to stop the major threat that inflicts suffering upon society before all of humanity is wiped out.

Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the evolution of man-eating monsters called “Aragami”. To defeat them, an organization named Fenrir was established as Earth's answer to save humanity through the use of “God Eaters. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.  Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to multiply while the fragments of humanity struggle to survive.

God Eater. much like Parasyte, features characters who have acquired their ability from the enemy, and now must use that very same power against them to protect Earth. Both Lenka and Izumi must form a bond with their weapons and master them before the threat becomes too big to handle. Each must form an alliance with various individuals in order to seek out more answers behind the invasion, and use the data to outwit their opponents without harming too many casualties. It's an action packed adventure that leaves you guessing at every moment, as to what could possibly happen to the main character if they make one fatal mistake.

The Players in Zetman have a similar mission and that's to burrow themselves into the skin of innocent humans, and using them as tools for their destructive purposes. Both main protagonists must join an organization that have all the answers to their existence, and must use this information to destroy the enemy before it's too late. Kouga and Jin work as a team using their superhuman powers to fight off evil, much like Izumi and Migi in their world. Their fate relies on their ability to work together under severe pressure, while unveiling the weak spots of the enemy and eliminating them as swiftly as possible.

Living in a world that you've been thrown into can be a scary experience, especially when confronted with enemies who can devour you at any moment. These anime put your mind into a different perspective, one where you have to think exactly like the main character, figuring out ways to survive in a world riddled with chaos and corruption. With its gripping, dreadful atmosphere, terrifying monster design and masterly crafted plot, Parasyte - the Maxim is a one of a kind anime that fans cannot get enough of.
A genius blend of science fiction and horror with a dash of slice of life, anime lovers of all types can find something to love in Parasyte. Are you looking for something to watch while you patiently wait for the next episode?

Let this list guide you some great anime similar to Parasyte we are sure you will love!

Similar Anime to Kiseijuu / Similar Anime to Parasyte

1. Speed Grapher

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April, 2005 - Sep, 2005

Set in a fictional Tokyo where the wealth-gap is exponential, the poor are barely surviving while the rich are setting new standards in moral degradation, greed and an endless desire for pleasure.
Saiga, a war photojournalist, infiltrates the Roppongi Club, a secret society comprised of the country’s richest and most powerful. It is there that Saiga discovers the kidnapped Kagura, a mysterious girl who has the power to grant the wish of anyone who is allowed to come in contact with her.
Saiga rescues her and manages to escape, but not without setting off a series of events that lead to a massive manhunt by the Roppongi Club’s most dangerous members to get Kagura back at any cost.

One of my favorite features of Parasyte - The Maxim is how it incorporates themes of human nature’s inherent duality. On one hand, much of humanity is monstrous, akin to selfish, destructive, demonic behavior.
Yet on the other hand, altruism, the act of selflessly helping others even at the detriment to one’s self is a large component of what sets us apart from other animals. Not only does Speed Grapher take this concept and run with it, this anime does it so exceptionally well you can’t help but question yourself on a deep, existential level.

2. Tokyo Ghoul

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July, 2014 - Sep, 2014

Ken Kaneki, a college student and lover of literature, meets a beautiful like-minded girl named Rize Kamishiro in a coffee shop in Tokyo. After a perfect date, Ken offers to walk her home, only to discover that she was a flesh-eating monster, known as a ghoul. He narrowly survives being eaten after she gets crushed by a falling construction platform.
After he is rushed to the hospital however, the surgeons have no choice but to perform a transplant using Rize’s organs, transforming Ken into a ghoul/human hybrid, instilling him to struggle with an unshakable desire for human flesh.

Just like Parasyte, Tokyo Ghoul’s plot plays with the idea of humans not being on top of the food chain. Rather than an alien parasite, the ghouls are something else entirely, but the humans-as-food concept is still very largely intact.
And just like Shinichi, Ken is still part human, leaving him with his consciousness, including his moral ground intact. There’s lots of blood and guts, so fans of Parasyte’s shocking scenes will enjoy Tokyo Ghoul for the same reasons.

3. Another

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan, 2012 - Mar, 2012

Koichi Sakakibara is transferring to Yomiyama North Junior High School, a private school with a strange and tragic past.
Suddenly, Koichi’s fellow students and their relatives begin to die in mysterious and violent ways. With the help of Mei Misaki, a fellow student who seems to go mysteriously unnoticed by her classmates, Koichi must find who or what is causing the murders and stop it before it’s too late.

There is a lot to love about Another, especially if you like Parasyte. Just like Shinichi and Migi, the relationship of Koichi and Mei are entirely secret; Koichi is the only student who can see and hear her.
Although there aren’t any sci fi elements to be found, there is plenty of great pacing and unexpected twists, not to mention plenty of blood. The sense of dread is cranked up to 11 here, and the tone and atmosphere make for chilling good watch, especially at night.

4. Pupa

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan, 2014 - Mar, 2014

Pupa tells the dark story of an orphaned teenager Utsutsu and his younger sister Yume who become infected by a mysterious virus called “Pupa,” a disease which turns its host into insatiable flesh eating monsters.
Although they are both infected by the same virus, Utsutsu gained the power of limb regeneration, which he uses to his advantage to keep the abomination within Yume at contained.

The theme and overarching plot elements of Pupa are very similar to Parasyte, including the corruption of human life due to a parasitic creature. Also, much like to Parasyte, Pupa explores the theme of questioning the value of human life. However, this anime also delves into topics such as domestic and child abuse, and the whole tone is very serious.
This anime is not for the faint of heart!

5. Elfen Lied

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct, 2014 to Dec, 2014

The Diclonius, a mutated species of humans with the power to destroy all humanity, have been captured and isolated by the government for study and experimentation.
One such Diclonius, Lucy, breaks free from her confines and begins taking bloody revenge on all those standing in her way. Before she gets a chance to escape, she is shot by a surviving security guard and falls into the ocean, only to be found by two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka.
After being struck with amnesia, they called her by the only thing she could say: Nyuu. However, the dangerous side of Lucy lies dormant within.

A Science Fiction masterpiece, Elfen Lied is a fantastic series for Parasyte fans for many reasons. The level of mystery surrounding the Diclonii, including Lucy, makes for an astounding story to build around. Just like the mysterious lifeforms of Parasyte, their motives are not shrouded in fog. Why are they so disposed to the destruction of the human race?
The Diclonii can also sense each other and have a deep, telepathic connection, just like the creatures of Parasyte. The action is top notch and the gore, while shocking, is not overdone. With only 13 episodes in the series, this is a great anime who are looking for something quick to watch through.

6. Gantz

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April, 2004 - June, 2004

High school students Kei and Masaru, while attempting to save a drunkard stuck on the subway tracks, end up getting hit by the train and killed. Rather than resting in peace, they are transported to an apartment with a handful of strangers, nearly barren with the exception of a large black sphere called “Gantz.”
In this strange, pseudo-afterlife, they must play his game. Suiting up with ability-enhancing gear and equipping high-tech weaponry, Kei and Masaru get ready for the biggest challenge of their lives.

Gantz is a mind-bending science fiction anime that takes everything to the extreme. Gratuitous, non-stop action are the highlight of this series, with plenty of over-the-top scenes that will make your head spin and keep you watching.
Just like Parasyte, Gantz isn’t afraid to crank up the weirdness.
