Similar Anime to Princess Connect Re:Dive

1. Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2020 – March 2020

After being pushed into it by a friend, Honjou Kaede starts playing New World Online, a popular Japanese virtual reality MMO. After creating her avatar, Maple (Kaede in-game) decides to put all her stat points into defense to avoid getting hurt. As a result, Maple possesses several unique and powerful skills as well as items that enable her to one-shot her opponents! A few days into playing New World Online, Maple comes third in a server-wide event and gains the reputation of an absurdly powerful, unkillable player in the game. Despite all this acclaim, Kaede is still a newbie and has many more adventures to add to her already-stunning repertoire.

BOFURI is a fun and wholesome adventure with some of the elements we’ve come to expect and love in videogame-based storylines. Like Princess Connect, BOFURI boasts a similar level of visual appeal in a setting that is akin to that of a fantasy isekai or videogame. The slice of life elements of both BOFURI and Princess Connect should not be understated either as the calm, cheery nature of both shows gives them a brightening quality. `

2. Log Horizon

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 2013 – March 2014

When the popular MMORPG Elder Tale undergoes an update, thirty thousand players on the Japanese server find themselves unable to log out. Shiroe is a socially awkward college student who has been playing Elder Tale for a long time. Now trapped in this world, Shiroe must lead his fellow players in navigating their new world, which has gained the properties of reality as NPCs exhibit full humanity and world cycles continue much like they would offline. Shiroe takes his journey to the virtual city of Akihabara joined by his friend Naotsugu and the assassin Akatsuki. Together, Shiroe and the other players forge new lives for themselves in this inexplicable situation that seems to have no real end.

Due to the nature of Log Horizon, while it does have the various elements one would expect from this kind of story, it does something different when it makes the characters’ focus finding better ways to live in their new environment rather than dedicate everything to finding a way out. That gives much of the series’ events a slice of life quality that is similar to the vibe that Princess Connect gives off. While Princess Connect does not overtly state that the setting is a videogame, the elements in that world point towards something akin to isekai fantasy or a videogame setting.

3. Hitsugi no Chaika (Chaika–The Coffin Princess–)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2014 – July 2014

Arthur Gaz ruled the Gaz Empire with an iron fist for well over 500 years, conducting terrible experiments on his own citizens. For his tyranny, he was dubbed “The Taboo Emperor”. Five years ago, the “Eight Heroes” defeated Emperor Gaz in battle. Today, Toru Acura is a former war saboteur struggling to adjust to life in times of peace. This is at least until a white-haired wizard named Chaika Trabant introduces herself. She claims to be searching for the scattered remains of her father in order to give them a proper burial, so she hires Toru and his adoptive sister, Akari, to assist her. However, they soon realise that Chaika is none other than the daughter of the tyrannical Emperor Gaz himself!

In a strange medieval fantasy world with supernatural creatures and tyrannical rulers, Chaika is an unlikely heroine. Much like Princess Connect’s Yuuki, Chaika has some tendencies of someone who can be seen as a little absent-minded. These protagonists also share a certain air of mystery surrounding their pasts, with Chaika being one of many daughters of the Emperor Gaz and Yuuki falling out of the sky with no memories. Both Chaika and Princess Connect have characters who team up and go on wacky adventures. Both shows are based in a fantasy setting; however, Chaika is a show that gets a bit more intense when it comes to the actual lore of the show.

4. Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki Desu ka? (Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?)

Masato is happy to be in a videogame at first, but he soon notices that his mother is in tow and to make things worse, she is way more powerful than he is! Together, Masato and mother embark on an adventure in this fantasy world and make some friends along the way.

Sporting a similar fantasy isekai/videogame setting as Princess Connect, Okaa-san Online is a similar title that brings together the adventure element we’ve come to expect from shows of this nature; however, it is more of a slice of life journey. Like Princess Connect, Okaa-san Online is comedic and focuses on the relationship between the characters, particularly Masato and his mother, as they attempt to clear the game.

5. Toriko

  • Episodes: 147
  • Aired: April 2011 – March 2014

In this world of mountain ranges made of ice cream and volcanoes of mac and cheese, the advent of the Gourmet Age has brought on the emergence of adventurers called Gourmet Hunters, who explore the world and seek out the rarest ingredients. Toriko is a famous Gourmet Hunter who is credited with the discovery of about 2% of all known ingredients in the world. Together with his friend Komatsu, a skilled chef who works at a five-star hotel, Toriko seeks to complete his Full Course Menu of Life, battling all kinds of adversaries in the process.

While this show is not in any way a fantasy isekai, Toriko is similar to Princess Connect Re:Dive in regards to the show’s focus on food. Toriko is a wacky shounen food universe in which characters are driven by their commitment and desire to create exceptional dishes and using food in interesting ways. Toriko’s similarity to Princess Connect Re:Dive also lies in its feature of certain supernatural elements: monsters and other whimsical world elements of Toriko can be compared to the various supernatural fantasy elements present in Princess Connect.

6. Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne! (Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!)

  • Episodes: 12

She is also given one wish, so she wishes to be reborn as a normal person with abilities that are average for the world to which she will be sent. Misato is reborn as Adele von Ascham, the daughter of a noble and she soon finds out that she possesses incredible magic powers that are way beyond average! Determined to live the average life she has always desired, she enrolls at a hunter school in a faraway kingdom under the alias “Mile”. As much as she tries to live an average life, things happen that continue to show that perhaps Misato was never meant to be just average in any life.

This isekai comedy featuring an overpowered protagonist finds its similarity to Princess Connect Re:Dive in its fantasy setting and comedic nature. As the protagonist journeys through this landscape, they meet several friends along the way and get into wacky adventures; however, both shows feature main characters who are somehow fated to become great in their respective universes.

Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!

I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
