According to the anime Vassalord., the world of darkness isn’t scary. However, the conflict of a vampire’s insatiable thirst for blood and expertly controlling it is. When we think of the nature surrounding vampires, we see them as villainous and indestructible, wreaking havoc upon the good and innocence of humanity. Although this scenario exists for some storylines, this isn’t the case for the anime on this list. In comparing 6 anime like Vassalord., we will observe their heroism as supernatural creatures dwelling through unusual circumstances, their quest to blend into their environments and most importantly, saving the damsel or dude in distress.

1. Vampire Hunter D (2000) (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust)

The story revolves around the infamous vampire hunter, D, who during a time when society has not overcome the differences between humans and vampires, has been accepted because of his success in capturing vampires. Once again, D is called upon to rescue the lovely Charlotte Elbourne, who is from a family with high social standing. At the request of her father, who offers a generous bounty, D takes on the job to bring Miss Charlotte back, dead or alive. As D competes with other bounty hunters up to this dangerous task, he will encounter various twists and run-ins. Also, various individuals during his journey will challenge and test his and their own strengths. Essentially, this film holds a classic and timeless storyline found in many films and literature. However, it varies from the rest because of the countless action scenes tied into the array of sci-fi, vampires/supernatural, and cowboy/western themes. Moreover, the scenic animation is breathtaking.

Although there is no sense of struggle within D from Vampire Hunter D because of being a hybrid vampire, Charley from Vassalord. is highly dependent on his master in order to contain his bloodlust. Both characters share the common responsibility of performing at the top of the line in their respective occupations. In addition to the main characters in their respective anime, both D and Charley share an unexpected plot twist when it comes to distinguishing the villains.


2. Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry captures the exciting, action-filled story of a man named Dante. Dante operates a devil hunting business. Dante is a half human, half demon hybrid with lineage stemming from the legendary dark knight, Sparda. Though it may seem like a lucrative financial option, Dante is constantly struggling with money. Aside from this dilemma, Dante resides with a young girl named, Patty, no relation. As such, in this anime, each episode is divided into several stories highlighting various characters. We also see several aspects to Dante’s personality throughout, but nonetheless, his mission is to hunt down the demons that caused the death of his mother.

Dante from Devil May Cry and Charley from Vassalord. are two hybrid creatures that employ themselves in institutions meant to preserve humanity. Both anime are characteristically dark in themes and are filled with tons of action sequences. Additionally, Dante and Charley share similar stoic, low-key personalities, appearing totally badass and unfazed by anything. There is a somewhat endearing dependency between Dante and Patty, and Charley and Rayflo-sama that fuels the purpose of our main characters’ sole objective.


3. Togainu no Chi

  • Aired: October 2010 – December 2010

Togainu no Chi is based on a shounen-ai visual novel game. Its setting is based in post-apocalyptic Japan, with the country decimated by conflict and war. We are introduced to a man named Akira, who is falsely accused of a crime. In order to be pardoned of his alleged criminal actions, Akira must participate in a popularized battle game called Igura and beat the strongest opponent in the game, the king, or Il Re. Igura is a ruthless game that may result in the killing of anyone who participates. From this, we will observe Akira fight for survival, clearing his name, and divulging the mysteries surrounding him.

While Togainu no Chi and Vassalord differ in series length, they both provide a dark, bloody and gruesome background. Their production contains a basis from shounen-ai sources with a similar relationship framework. Although Togainu no Chi doesn’t have supernatural creatures like vampires in Vassalord., it can be equivalent to say that the evils of war and its products generates a monster of its own.

4. No. 6

  • Aired: July 2011 – September 2011

This story takes place in No.6, a fortified utopian city, untouched by the hardships of life. We follow the life of Shion, who in one instance, decides to care for an injured guy and provide him respite for the night. We later discover that the man Shion has taken in is a fugitive, but this does not deter him whatsoever. Nezumi is his name, and because Shion harbored a fugitive in his home, he is forced to abandon his life in No.6 and reside elsewhere. Fast-forward 4 years, Shion is charged for several criminal acts in No.6, and we find Nezumi in the picture once again. Together, the two are fugitives running against the law.

The animation styles for No.6 and Vassalord are incomparable, seeing that one has bright qualities and the other is very dark in identity. The couples of No. 6 and Vassalord. appear similar, in that one has white hair and the other has black, and both are very prince-like and gorgeous. Moreover, their character dynamic presents a complete reliance in one another.


5. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)

  • Aired: April 2015 – June 2015

Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign) begins with a virus that wipes out a significant portion of the human population, leaving many of the young unharmed. As the numbers of humans are incredibly decreased, we discover the underground population of vampires slowly emerge and take dominance. The vampires take this authority to their advantage, making servants, slaves, and life sources out of the humans. Among these survivors, are Yuuichirou and Mikaela Hyakuya, who plan to escape their captors, but terribly fail. Later on, we are introduced to the Moon Demon Company, a military unit dedicated to exterminating the vampires. From this, we watch Yuu train immensely, taking retribution for the vampires who took away his family and livelihood.

Owari no Seraph and Vassalord. provide a palatable course of sword battles, gore and drama. Although the character development differs from one another, each anime contains the main protagonists’ intention of saving mankind from vampire supremacy. Furthermore, even though the relationships between our characters in each anime are not identical, e.g., friendship vs servant/master, Owari no Seraph and Vassalord. share the importance of supporting one another in their conflict.

6. Noblesse: Awakening

  • Aired: February 2016

Noblesse follows Cadis Etrama di Raizel, who wakes up from an 820 year long slumber. After emerging from his coffin, he starts out his life as a high school student, making friends with Shinwu, Yuna, and Ikhan. Additionally, his loyal servant, Frankenstein, accompanies Rai. After several vampires have gone rogue, due to the disturbance of the ‘organization’, Rai and his friends attempt to stop these miscreants, all the while, unveiling the truth to Rai’s past.

Noblesse: Awakening and Vassalord. offer a short, concise and in-depth storyline. Even though Noblesse encompasses the value of Rai’s new and old friendships versus Vassalord’s servant/master relationship, both possess the element of loyalty and finding one’s sense of purpose. Masked in dark animation and gloomy themes, there is in contrast, a comforting component to these anime
