6 Games Like God of War [Recommendations]

INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH

God of War released on the PS2 back in 2005 and ever since then, Kratos’s story has continued to wow us gamers. Each new game of the series continues the hack and slash game mechanics all while mixing in quick time events or QTEs for short to make a truly fun gaming franchise last even twelve years later. With God of War 4 looming ever so closer, maybe you’re looking for a game like God of War to pass the time. Well don’t worry folks we here at Honey’s Anime are here to save the day! Today we’re looking at 6 Games Like God of War.

Now what makes God of War so appealing to keep the legacy alive for so long? For the most part, what makes God of War so much fun is the sheer amount of action and the visceral gameplay. The God of War franchise isn’t afraid to show blood and enemies getting obliterated. Thus for our 6 Games Like God of War, we made sure to find titles that incorporated that. Games where robots, demons and or even angelic beings get destroyed with tight controls and fluid gaming mechanics. Now we know Kratos wouldn’t want to wait any longer and nor do you, let’s get right into this list.

1. Bayonetta

  • System/Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC
  • Publisher: Sega, Nintendo (Wii U)
  • Developer: PlatinumGames
  • Release Date: Oct 29, 2009

Bayonetta has been in a coma for over 500 years and she’s itching to find out why. Having lost her memory—Bayonetta seeks answers as to why she was put into a coma-like state and by who. Meanwhile, as Bayonetta seeks answers, she learns that the truth entails a war between the Umbra Witches and the Lumen Sages wages around her. With no feelings of allegiance to either group, Bayonetta isn’t afraid to use her witch-like powers to defeat them equally. What is so important that Bayonetta can’t remember and who has the answers? Doesn’t matter to Bayonetta, who plans on beating the crap out of anyone who she deems in her way.

Violence, gore, action and a witch with some serious aggression issues—seems like Kratos in a nut shell. PlatinumGames and Sega’s Bayonetta is a non-stop hack and slash title with plenty of appeal to make God of War fans excited from the first second they hit the start button. Players control Bayonetta as they do battle against angelic monsters, as well as other witches using a slew of weapons and Bayonetta’s magical hair that can transform. Yes, you didn’t read that incorrectly—Bayonetta literally uses her hair to kill enemies. Trust us folks, if you love the action of the God of War series, then you’ll easily be very pleased by Bayonetta.

2. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

  • System/Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
  • Publisher: Konami
  • Developer: Platinum Games, Kojima Production
  • Release Date: Feb 19, 2013

Raiden has played second fiddle to Solid Snake for too long; that all changes in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Raiden has been hired to act as an escort to protect an important VIP but things go astray quickly when they are attacked and Raiden is nearly killed. Luckily, already being mostly a cyborg—Raiden is enhanced and bought back from the brink of death by some allies. Now hell bent on revenge, Raiden is all too ready to take his sword and rip apart some enemies. There was a time Raiden had the moniker Jack the Ripper; those that stand before his path of revenge will learn why.

Kratos and Raiden may not be from the same worlds or games but they sure do share a lust for revenge. In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, players control the cybernetic Raiden as they slash enemies into little pieces. With some very cool mechanics, players can actually feel what it’s like to have full control over Raiden’s HF blade. With loads of bosses and plenty of baddies to kill it’s no reason why our 6 Games Like God of War holds Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in such high regard. Raiden hasn’t been liked by fans of the Metal Gear franchise, well that all changes in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

3. Darksiders

  • System/Platform: PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Publisher: THQ, THQ Nordic
  • Developer: Vigil Games
  • Release Date: Jan 5, 2010

War has been raging between Heaven and Hell since the very beginning of time. Due to neither side ever gaining an edge over each other, a group came in and created the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse to keep some semblance of law and order in this raging war. The mediators made sure to create a third faction and placed seven seals to act as a sign for the ending of the war. War one of the four warriors, arrives on Earth as it seems the final seal has been broken but soon he will learn that not all is as it seems.

Darksider from now defunct THQ was a title that really captured the beauty of God of War in many ways. Players controlled war in this action adventure title battling against various enemies and bosses alike. Bosses were on of the coolest elements of Darksiders since most really challenged the player like God of War. With a great story, plenty of visceral action and tons of areas to explore, it’s no surprise we had to have it on a list of games like God of War. Hey, once you finish Darksiders, there is a sequel and soon to be released third title, so you’ll have plenty to do after you beat it.

4. Nier: Automata

  • System/Platform: PS4. PC
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Developer: PlatinumGames
  • Release Date: Feb 23, 2017

The world has faced a true tragic event; Robotic like beings one day invaded the world and began killing humans left and right. With no other option left, humanity left Earth and headed for the moon to seek refuge. Now in the year 11945 AD, the human race has launched a means of fighting back against the robots using androids called YoRHA. One of those androids named 2B just so happens to be on a mission but this mission will be one of the longest she’s ever been on…

Acting as a sequel to Nier, a game released back in 2010—players don’t need to have played the original to understand Nier: Automata’s story. In many ways Nier: Automata may seem like a simple hack and slash title by definition but the game is anything but simple. Players will be controlling 2B and various other characters in a game that has mech battles, hack and slash elements and even bullet hell like gameplay all in equal measure. However, like God of War, Nier: Automata is a hack and slash adventure title first and foremost and we’re glad to say one of the best we’ve played in a long while. Kratos may have to watch his back as Nier: Automata aims to dethrone him…but we’re sure that Kratos wouldn’t take that sitting down.

5. Ninja Gaiden Black

  • System/Platform: Xbox, Xbox 360
  • Publisher: Tecmo
  • Developer: Team Ninja
  • Release Date: Sept 20, 2005

Ninja Gaiden Black brings back the elements of Ninja Gaiden all while changing the game’s difficulty and adds new gameplay elements and missions. However, what doesn’t change is the story of Ryu Hayabusa’s first mission. While Ryu aims to take down a Shadow clan hideout, he learns from female shinobi, Ayane, that his village was attacked. Returning immediately, Ryu sees Doku steal the legendary Dark Dragon Blade and uses it to kill Ryu. However, even death can’t stop Ryu as he is brought back to life and aims to defeat Doku all while taking the evil blade back to avoid it’s power laying waste to the world.

Ninja Gaiden Black was initially created because of complaints that the original title was overly difficult to beat. Thankfully those who wish for the original challenge can enjoy Ninja Gaiden Black’s new content all while keeping the challenge from the previous title. Players control Ryu as the face down various bosses and enemies using his ninja like weapons and skills to survive. Added to Ninja Gaiden Black are several new features such as a revamped camera, new missions and an easy mode that kind of insults players if they choose it. God of War and Ninja Gaiden Black are worlds apart in their locations and lore but they share plenty of similarities in both gameplay mechanics and visceral like presentation. Thus why we knew Ninja Gaiden Black had to be on our list of games like God of War and we’re sure you’ll all agree once you play it.

  • System/Platform: PS2, PS3, Xbox 360
  • Developer: Capcom Production Studio 1
  • Publisher: Capcom

Players will gain access to newer swords, guns and weapons all while upgrading Dante in a similar fashion to God of War. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening also boasts some high difficulty so players better be ready to dodge and use Dante’s various weapon skills to the best of their abilities.
