If at any time you thought, Jio sounds like Rin, you’d be right which is why in many ways 666 Satan deserves to be on this list. Both protagonists have a tragic backstory and both have power that can be used for good and for evil in equal measure. Besides that though 666 Satan actually has a lot of good traits going for it, boasting a strong art style that feels at home with its fantasy and supernatural genre, readers will get lost in Jio and Ruby’s story. Add to this is a story that is fun and frenetic filled with cool action moments and Shounen like tropes that work in its favor. Now go forth and read 666 Satan to see if Jio will become a world dominator or lose himself to his own power.
2. Atori Shou
- Mangaka: Tashiro, Takuya
- Genre: Action, Ecchi, Supernatural, Seinen
- Volumes: 7
- Published Date: 2005-2008
Maybe one reason you love Ao No Exorcist is because Rin Okumura has his famous sword named Kurikara. You loved the mixture of supernatural action and swordplay working in unison to create epic action scenes. If that was a thought on your mind then Atori Shou has you covered. This seven volume series follows Atori, a demon hunter who kills demons with a sword hidden in her hair. Yeah that’s a bit weird we agree. Not weird though is Atori’s story mirrors Rin’s tale as they both work for agencies to do to fight against supernatural enemies.
Atori Shou does have a several large differences beyond the gender of our main characters. Atori Shou is listed as an Ecchi, and it lives to that title showing some fan service during the calmer moments of the story and during fights. If you also were looking for a more mature story, seeing as how this is labeled as a Seinen, a lot of the fights in the story are more graphic and darker than Ao No Exorcist’s more young adult orientated action. Nevertheless, both stories resonate with one another because of their strong storytelling and strong art. Tashiro, Takuya does an impressive job making the characters pop and using just enough fan service to keep readers from looking away from each page. Give Atori Shou a try if you want some pleasant to look at demon slaying action.
3. Iron Knight
- Mangaka: Yagi, Tomohiro
- Genre: Action, Fantasy, Shounen, Supernatural
- Volumes: 3
- Published Date: 2013-2014
Teppei and Rin can probably have a long discussion about how their lives at one time were very normal. Both face their lives changed when demons come in and kill those they care for, in Rin’s case his adoptive father and in Teppei’s case the belief his family and friends have been killed by the newly awakened demon threat. With that we welcome you to Yagi, Tomohiro’s three volume manga series named Iron Knight. Despite a familiar start, Teppei’s adventure takes some darker turns and while we won’t spoil what happens exactly, we will say it’s an interesting story indeed.
Iron Knight boasts a lot of great qualities aside from a strong beginning. Yagi’s work has some strong visuals, fights burst on each page and the amount of powers from the demons and Teppei leave some wickedly cool clashes. While the shortest manga series on this list, packed in three volumes is a well-crafted story and some great illustrations. At the end of the day Iron Knight will satisfy your Ao no Exorcist craving and in many ways you might enjoy Teppei’s tale more than Rin’s, but that’s subjective so we won’t comment which we enjoy more or less. We here at Honey’s Anime don’t want to anger two character with demonic forces anytime soon.

4. Enen no Shouboutai (Fire Force)
- Mangaka: Ookubo, Atsushi
- Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Shounen
- Volumes: 8
- Published Date: 2015-present
In many ways Enen no Shouboutai is the truest definition of irony. Shinra Kusakabe, or as he is nicknamed Devil’s Footprints, joins a fire fighting company to learn about his parent’s death, a demon who uses fire fighting fires, manga is ironic sometimes. Regardless what’s not ironic is how fitting this manga is on this list. Another young man who loses his someone and decides to fight back against the forces of evil despite having their power. Ookubo Atsushi may have made a very odd manga by definition but what comes forth is an impressive and unique story of a different take on just typical Shounen manga.
The take from Enen no Shouboutai is that Shounen still has some unique ideas out there to launch to the public. Ookubo’s odd tale of a demonic firefighter oddly enough has some common traits shared with Ao No Exorcist certainly but there’s enough of a difference to feel fresh despite the usual stigma of Shounen all being overly similar. While not yet completed, Enen no Shouboutai certainly has the potential to become a great series, but only time will tell in regards to that. For now however, we can only continue reading Ookubo’s work and hope that it’s not the last title this author will do.
5. Arago: London Shikei Tokushu Hanzai Sousakan
- Mangaka: Arai, Takahiro
- Genre: Action, Mystery, Shounen, Supernatural
- Volumes: 9
- Published Date: 2009-2011
Let’s be honest for a moment. Every family of these main characters may have it harder than the main characters themselves. In Arago our main character Arago and his twin brother Yuan have parents that were brutally murdered by creatures. This leads to our two main characters to going to different routes to learn the truth and take down the monsters who did this to their family. We at Honey’s Anime think it would be very interesting if the main characters from this list meet up to talk to one another about their lives.
Jokes aside Arago London Shikei Tokushu Hanzai Sousakan created by Arai Takahiro is a very cool manga series. Yuan, who joins the police force and Arago who has gone a quite different route are both very intriguing protagonists and remind us strongly of Rin and Yukio, Rin’s brother who is the gun wielding exorcist of Ao No Exorcist. Readers of this manga will find that besides concept, their story and their actions throughout this nine volume work are eerily similar. At the end of the series you’ll almost wonder if the fate of the Okumura brothers will mimic Arago’s twins. For now only time will tell but that shouldn’t stop you from trying Arago.
6. Black Torch
- Mangaka: Takagi, Tsuyoshi
- Genre: Action, Shounen, Supernatural
- Volumes: ?
- Published Date: 2016-?
Stepping away from demon fire fighters and demon infused warriors we look at Black Torch by Mangaka Takagi, Tsuyoshi. Black Torch follows Jirou Azuma who has been training to be a ninja for the majority of his life. Add to that an interesting ability in the form of communicating with animals and we learn quickly Jirou is far from normal. Entering his life is a black cat called Ragou who teaches our main character that there exists spirits called mononoke across the land. However, when Ragou is attacked Jirou will learn what his power truly is and why Ragou’s power is wanted from these mononoke spirits.
While a very short manga so far, Black Torch has a lot going for it. Jirou is an interesting take on demon powers in his ability where instead of fire attacks or destructive force, we see a more caring power. Takagi’s art style is also very impressive with characters having strong definitions and some rather cool outfits that are used. Black Torch may have just started several months ago but it’s a nice way to round off this impressive list because of its unique take on demonic powers being used by a main character. Plus he’s a ninja, that’s pretty cool we think.
Ao No Exorcist has some stiff competition in the form of the series mentioned on this list. Every series shares tragic family backstories but beyond that all have unique takes on how these demonic main characters fight and struggle in their respective series. Now with so many similar manga to Ao No Exorcist we at Honey’s Anime probably missed one or two great titles. Please let us know in the comments down below if you felt something else could have been here or confess that we got it right.
