Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Ao-chan Can’t Study!) Introduction and Story

Introducing Ao Horie, Year One, Class Two. She’s beauty and brains but, unfortunately, commits most of her schedule to study. Ao-chan wants to get into a prestigious university in the future with support from her parents, and that means no time for friends or fun! To her, being young is just an obstacle, something in the way of her accomplishing her big dreams.

Although Ao-chan is extra studious, she is well-known in her class because of her unique name and its origins. While in grade school, Ao-chan presented to the class where and how she got her name. Being so young and naïve, she proudly declared that her dad came up with her name. “A as in apple and O as in orgy!” “Show em’ my A-O-face!” Life after that was miserable because as she got older, Ao-chan discovered that her father is an erotic novelist, the very popular Mr. Hanasaki Horie.

As the daughter of the “pleasure master” residing in the “house of lewd,” her classmates wonder if Ao-chan shares the same likeness and experience as the characters in her dad’s novels. In actuality, she’s a rookie in that subject. Ao-chan hates all men, stating that they all want “that thing!”

Proving her wrong, we meet Ao-chan’s classmate, the “king of normies” Takumi Kijima. Popular and good looking, everyone knows the story of his sexual prowess and “big hands.” However, those rumors are only half true as he has his sights set on Ao-chan and wants to do more than the dirty with her. Shaking off his advances, Ao-chan wants to set the record straight once and for all, but something always gets in the way….

Why You Should Watch Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Ao-chan Can’t Study!)

1. Never a Dull Moment

Ao-chan Can’t Study is super funny and entertaining because each episode offers lots of comedic moments such as Ao-chan and Kijima getting into tons of awkward and compromising positions. What’s even more hilarious is Ao-chan’s dad! It isn’t because Horie-san needs the filthy train of thought for his work, but he makes “the talk” not as uncomfortable. Matter of fact, he tries to make sex not as scary and painful, lol! It’s interesting to see the relationship between father and daughter, and how he pushes Ao-chan to do it for more work-related content!

2. Fan Service

From the start of Ao-chan, the first episode shows us Ao-chan and Kijima sitting in the nurse’s office. In another episode, the two of them are hiking at night with Kijima trying to tell Ao-chan delicately that her skirt is tucked in where her underwear is showing. Midway into the season, the cast visits the boob festival where food vendors serve a bunch of meat because you know, sins of the flesh. All in all, there’s a lot of flashing here and booty there. It’s hard not to include this aspect for the kind of content presented in the plot.

Why You Should Skip Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Ao-chan Can’t Study!)

1. Where Are They Going With This?

With Ao-chan and Kijima as the star couple, Ao-chan Can’t Study! hints that the story will exhibit a romantic element. As such, we expect that their relationship will go somewhere. However, every episode has them at a standstill because either some oddity occurs or the focus is drawn away from the pair. Writers also attempt to include some drama between Miyabi Takaoka and Kijima to get a rise out of Ao-chan, but such exciting events fizzle out quickly. Additionally, because Ao-chan believes that all men are wild carnal beasts, for Kijima to be a different quality than this, we hope for an ending that has him and Ao-chan officially becoming boyfriend and girlfriend.

2. AO-kay, But Could Be Better

Ao-chan Can’t Study! has a lot of great qualities, such as comedic moments, balanced screen time for the small cast of characters, and people and events being realistic and relatable. However, this anime could have expanded more to establish depth and story. If Ao-chan Can’t Study’s intent is to be lighthearted and carefree, then it hit the bullseye. If not, we believe that there could have more events and circumstances to keep viewers engaged and entertained. Show us more reasons it’s so hard for Ao-chan to study.
