We older otaku no doubt remember the golden age of harem ecchi anime. Main characters tended to be completely oblivious to the girls who liked them and, typically. were braindead when it came to dealing with more than one girl at a time. Often, harem leads would just friendzone the entire group of ladies not by choice but because they never made moves and acted like a girl rubbing large oppai on their backs/arms was more of an annoyance than anything else. Let’s face it, folks, harem protagonists use to be literally dumber than bricks but did you notice we said “use to be”? That’s right, readers, we think that ecchi harem protagonists are beginning to finally learn and we have some proof of that we’d love to share with you!
Proof of Intelligence: Arata Kasuga and Issei Hyoudou
Arata from Trinity Seven and Issei in High School DxD prove that the harem ecchi main lead isn’t being given to complete imbeciles. Arata and Issei won’t win top honors at their respected schools—as most seem to rarely focus on school—but their actions show they aren’t completely oblivious to the girls loving them. Arata notices early on that the girls around him—namely Levi Kazama and Lilith Asami—show some interest in his male charms and uses this for his own perverted actions. The same can be said of Issei who doesn’t know how to show his love for his soon-to-be harem but isn’t afraid to try and grope any pair of oppai that come into his sight in bed or out. These two males are enemies of women all around but let’s face it, they are at least smart enough to make moves when the girls are hitting on them.
Proof of Idiocy: Fuutarou Uesugi
Many might argue that Fuutarou is a genius within the world of The Quintessential Quintuplets but we’ll outright and say he’s a dang idiot! This man has several sisters he is about to teach and somehow doesn’t notice their constant moves on him or attempts at showing their love! The otaku who miss the days of Keitarou—Kei—from Love Hina no doubt love that Fuutarou is a smarter man but equally is clueless when it comes to the opposite sex. Missing out on a bevy of oppai is a sin no man can ever truly repent for!
Proof of Cleverness: Amatsuyu Kisaragi
Amatsuyu—nicknamed Jouro—initially is unaware that several girls from ORESUKI love him but in the end, he does admit he wasn’t completely oblivious either. In the very last episode—the OVA episode—Jouro ends up trying to make the girls hate him so they won’t hate each other if he does choose one over the other. Thus, he ends up looking like scum by trying to make the girls all choose a day of the week to be part of his ultimate harem but they see through his motives and continue to love him. Jouro gets a solid A- from us here at Honey’s Anime for using a clever ruse to not end up in a harem that hurts his friends.
Proof of Something: Noir Stalgia
Rather than just say Noir is an ignoramus, we have to give the main lead of The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter some props. While Noir seems to not notice several girls like him such as his childhood friend Emma Brightness or the healing elf Luna, he does, at least, utilize their quite large oppai. Due to Noir’s need for perverted actions to increase his LP—life points—he doesn’t shy away from girls rubbing their butts on him or slamming their oppai right in his face. Noir even lets Emma make out with him constantly to help his headaches…which doesn’t make sense and we know he understands that as well. Noir gets a pass as he’s not a complete idiot but he’s equally not as smart as our other smart harem leads.
Final Thoughts
Harem ecchi leads haven’t completely become the smartest characters in the anime world just yet but you can’t deny they have finally become a bit more intelligent. While we do miss the brilliantly ignorant leads like Kei and Ichika, with characters like Issei and Arata coming into focus we can’t deny being smarter isn’t a bad thing for the ecchi/harem genre.
