Honey’s Highlights

I love a good love triangle. It's a bit like ef: A Tale of Memories. This might be an even better story!

I wonder if we should tell him it's an ecchi romance anime?.. The childhood love story will make it really interesting. A bit like Skip Beat or Macross Frontier with the music, too.

E-e-ecchi?! B-b-but this sounds like the perfect romance!

Don't worry, Mo-chan. There are a few other romance anime you can watch this winter.

Synopsis

Yuu, a transfer student, is a shy young man. He can’t take his hands of his smartphone, because he’s always checking Twitter! Fuuka, a girl who goes at her own pace and is a bit all over the place but still draws people to her, doesn’t have a mobile phone. Koyuki, Yuu’s childhood friend and a popular singer, reconnects with Yuu on Twitter. A love that starts because there’s signal, and a love that starts because there’s no signal. In the middle of summer, a love triangle begins!!

Three Episode Impression

Music and love triangles are showing a lot of promise in what’s bound to be considered White Album 3 by many in the anime community. Admittedly, it’s a semi-direct sequel to the classic sports romance Suzuka, as it deals with Fuuka Akitsuki, the daughter of the main two from Suzuka. However, the parents play a very small role, and track only has a little influence over the plot. Back to the show it truly mirrors: White Album. First off, music plays a pretty essential plot device. However, music was a much more defined goal from the get go in White Album, while we’re just starting to get into it in Fuuka. So it does feel quite slow. Thankfully, the love triangle (another similarity with White Album) is being formed intelligently and has kept me interested in the outcome of the show. The one aspect that will be very telling about the overall progression of Fuuka is whether or not physical intimacy will be involved. I’m betting no, but the show hasn’t shied away from capturing women in their underwear.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Yuu Haruna

Voice Actor: Yuusuke Kobayashi

A young man who is timid and bad at hanging out with people. He’s always got his phone in his hand, looking at Twitter. He transferred to a high school in Tokyo due to his father’s job transfer and ended up living with his three sisters.

Fuuka Akitsuki

Voice Actor: Lynn

An extremely cheerful and energetic girl who loves music. She has a laid-back personality, but is picky in her own way. Perhaps because of this, she doesn’t have a mobile phone, but is always listening to music on her CD player. She tends to be manipulated by others a lot, but has a strange charm that draws people to her.

Koyuki Hinashi

Voice Actor: Saori Hayami

A mature girl and popular singer. Yuu’s childhood friend. She was separated from Yuu for a while, but after a certain incident they were reunited. They gave each other nicknames after the members of a band they both used to like - she calls Yuu ‘Niko-kun’ and he calls her ‘Tama-chan.’

Sara Iwami

Voice Actor: Mikako Komatsu

An upperclassman at Yuu and Fuuka’s school. She’s tall and has a stunning figure, but due to her looking scary and not having very good communication skills, she’s easily misunderstood by those around her.

Makoto Mikasa

Voice Actor: Soma Saito

Yuu and Fuuka’s classmate who is one-quarter Japanese, born in the UK and raised in Germany. He’s got so-called handsome looks, but…?

Kazuya Nachi

Voice Actor: Kazuyuki Okitsu

An upperclassman at Yuu and Fuuka’s school and a member of the track team. He’s always calling out to Fuuka, but is given the cold shoulder every time.
