Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? (So I’m a Spider, So What?) is such a fun isekai with a unique premise: Kumoko comes back to life as a spider, of all creatures, in a medieval-type universe. From the first moment of her life, she has to fight for survival, facing monsters several times stronger than her, while being completely alone. Meanwhile, most of her former classmates are reborn as humans. It looks like Kumoko drew the short end of the stick, but so far she’s been dealing with her new life amazingly well. Let’s see what the fuss is all about!
An Isekai for Everyone
So I’m a Spider, So What? is both for people who love isekai AND people who are fed up with them. Let us explain: many of us read light novels, follow our favorite isekai and secretly wish we were born in an alternate universe as powerful heroes. Still, many others are just fed up with new isekai popping up every season, especially since they seem to come up with longer and longer titles that are impossible to remember!
So I’m a Spider, So What? knows its audience and shamelessly plays up the ridiculousness of the genre. A whole class dies - we don’t know how or why yet - and they all get resurrected in another universe with their memories intact. This doesn’t happen often in isekai and we are hoping to see more of their past and present interactions revealed. For example, we know that Fei, the dragon, used to bully Kumoko in school, yet she seems to have grown as a person since then. What will happen when the two cross paths again?
Aoi Yuuki Steals the Show
But, isn’t it boring that we mostly see a lonely spider roaming dangerous caves, talking to herself? A big part of Spider’s hype is thanks to Kumoko’s seiyuu, Aoi Yuuki. Aoi Yuuki also voices Tsuyu in Boku no Hero Academia and many other of our favorite characters but she definitely shines as the seiyuu for Kumoko. She goes from shrill shrieks of despair to munching sounds to enthusiastic squirms with ease! Thanks to her, even the most hesitant otaku have fallen for Kumoko. It’s impossible not to empathize with Kumoko’s plight when we follow her inner monologue when she loses her home over and over again, or when she feasts on a delicious monster after a close win.
Where Is It Going?
Our beloved spider seems to be getting stronger and stronger while she is making her way out of the caves. Who knows how strong she will be once she reunites with the rest of her former classmates? We are hoping for a super-strong Kumoko with insane dark powers. She’s been building the taboo skill since birth without knowing its full impact and with the latest episode’s reveal (as of writing) of a brainwashed super-religious cleric who wants to eliminate taboo-skilled creatures, Kumoko is in deep trouble. Will Kumoko end up a Demon Lord? We’d love to see a character that starts up really weak and turns her fate around!
