Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made waves in the fall of 2018 by managing to surmount expectations and rise above superhero (and Spider-Man) fatigue to deliver a movie that is visually unlike any other. It featured the debut of many comic book versions of Spider-Man, including the popular Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, and told the story of a boy overcoming the challenges of inheriting a mantle and finding your place in the world. Honey’s Anime not only found two anime that reflected the theme of inheriting a powerful name but also features super-powered characters battling it out in visually great fights. If you found yourself wanting more of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, then here are two anime may scratch that itch until the inevitable sequel.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is the first movie released from the world of My Hero Academia. Class 1-A, some of the top superhero students in the world, find themselves making their way to I-Island, a manmade island where the smartest scientists and top heroes are gathering for an exposition on all things related to superhero tools and powers. Things quickly go awry when a supervillain hijacks the building where the exposition is held and almost everyone is trapped except the Class 1-A students. It’ll take these students and the quirkless, but brilliant, daughter of a top scientist to stop the villain’s plans.

Major Similarities Between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Boku no Hero Academia the Movie: Futari no Hero (My Hero Academia: Two Heroes)

1. Super Heroes

My Hero Academia borrows a ton from American superhero comic books, particularly with All Might, a character who will remind you of Captain America. If you wanted more young superheroes like Miles Morales, then you won’t find a better choice than My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.

2. Inheriting a Title

Izuku Midoriya, the main character, must rise to the occasion of becoming the new #1 hero after inheriting All Might’s powers and considering that All Might is losing his own ability to use them. It’s a direct mirror of Miles Morales having to become his world’s Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s own death at the hands of Kingpin.

3. Team-Up

One of the best parts of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was that it didn’t just feature Miles Morales’ Spider-Man but also several other different versions of him from other parallel universes to make for a lot of fun team-up moments. My Hero Academia: Two Heroes brings Izuku’s class in tow and we get to see the top students as well as Izuku and All Might pair up in some similarly fun fights.

Boruto, the son of the Leaf village’s Hokage and famous war hero Naruto, has a lot to live up to. Having gotten the privilege of growing around a family, even if it’s a family that can be distant, Boruto has the gifts and flaws of his father magnified. He must learn to mature quickly much in the way his father did because the peace that Naruto brought over the ninja world is decaying under the assault of hidden enemies.

Major Similarities Between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

1. A New Hero and A New Story

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse takes pleasure in depicting each Spider-Man highlighting that this was their narrative until we come to accept that this is, in fact, Miles Morales’ narrative near the end as he becomes New York’s new protector. Boruto starts off this series by pointing out that although this was once Naruto’s story, this is now his story and it’ll be a different one than his father’s, one with him as the hero.

2. Amazing Animation

As a 2D and 3D hybrid, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the most visually unique movies out there and that’s part of what made it such a special experience. Boruto: Naruto Next Generation’s episode 65 was a similar visual extravaganza as it gathered a wide variety of animators to produce some of the best fight sequences you’ll ever see.

Final Thoughts

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a terrific coming-of-age superhero film that provided a brilliant story with amazing sights. Both My Hero Academia: Two Heroes and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations will fill that coming-of-age itch with stories about heroes having to take up the weight of the world on their shoulders at a young age.
