Synopsis

Mei Ayazuki is just your ordinary, everyday high-school girl. That is until one night, when the moon is full and red, she’s transported through time to the Meiji Period by Charlie, a self-proclaimed magician.

She ends up in a strange, Meiji-era ‘Tokyo’ where the existence of ghosts is accepted. Led by Charlie, she finally arrives at the Rokumeikan. There, waiting for her to arrive, are the historical figures Ougai Mori, Shunsou Hishida, Otojirou Kawakami, Kyouka Izumi, Gorou Fujita, Yakumo Koizumi, and Tousuke Iwasaki.

Whilst interacting with these men, she discovers she is a Tamayori - someone who can see ghosts - a skill that is highly valued in the Meiji Period. Due to these powers, her relationship with the men begins to change… As she gets to know these handsome men in a new era she just can’t get used to, a love begins to grow within her.

Will Mei be able to return to her time? What will become of her love - a love that crosses the boundaries of time and space?

Three Episode Impression

There are a handful of bishounen anime this season, but the only one I care for is Meiji Tokyo Renka, which is actually a reverse harem. It’s an isekai anime whose main character, Mei, time travels to the Meiji Period where she meets many bishounen including Ougai, who falls for her and declares her to be his fiance. It turns out that Mei has special powers to see spirits, which makes her an asset, whether or not any of the boys want to admit it. Out of the three episodes I’ve watched, I think Meiji Tokyo Renka brings the same old reverse harem plot that we’re all familiar with, so it’s not exactly anything new. However, I do enjoy it to some extent. I mean, I like it a lot more than Nil Admirari, which I think had a similar feel since both main characters have special powers to deal with the supernatural. Mei isn’t dislikable either. She’s more interesting than the main character of Amnesia. The only problem I have is that some of the bishounen characters can be cringy. I find Yakuma especially cringy because his personality just contrasts too much with what I think of for a megane character. On top of that, he’s over the top. I just don’t appreciate characters like him. I honestly don’t think Meiji Tokyo Renka is as terrible as all of the Touken Ranbu anime that have been released, so I’m going to keep watching. You never know what might surprise you.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Mei Ayazuki

Voice Actor: Sumire Morohoshi

The protagonist, a completely ordinary high-school girl. Loves to eat, especially beef. She’s the type to treasure things, so is extremely good at looking after things and keeping them for a long time. Since travelling through time, her memories of her original life are vague.

Ougai Mori

Voice Actor: Daisuke Namikawa

A super elite novelist, doctor, and bureaucrat. Pretending to be two years older than he really was, he entered the medical department at university (the current Tokyo University) at the age of eleven and graduated top of his class. However, he has certain policies that surpass those of his time and make him a little different from other people, such as spending his time at home in the nude.

Shunsou Hishida

Voice Actor: KENN

An arts student who came to Tokyo from Nagano Prefecture. A silent and cool character. However, he acts quite eccentric when he finds something he wants to paint, and will persuade them no matter who they are. He has no awareness of this, though. Half-persuaded, half-forced by Ougai, he’s freeloading at the Mori residence.

Otojiro Kawakami

Voice Actor: Kousuke Toriumi

An actor trying to make it big. The president of the Kawakami Theatre Troupe. Has a secret side job where he cross dresses and works as a geisha in order to fund his theatre group. An older-brother type who is polite and good at looking after others.

Kyouka Izumi

Voice Actor: Nobuhiko Okamoto

After leaving Hokuriku English-Japanese School, he came to Tokyo from the countryside aiming to be a playwright. He’s rather sensitive and tends to be harsh with his words. Kyouka is freeloading at a teacher, Kouyou Ozaki’s house and secretly collects bunny merchandise. He started doing so after being told by his deceased mother that he would be promoted if he collected items from his opposite Chinese zodiac year. He is also a Tamayori.

Goro Fujita

Voice Actor: Jun Fukuyama

A police officer in the mystery patrol department. His job is to monitor humans with the ability to produce ghost deities and ghosts themselves. He is highly regarded for his excellent swordsmanship, but everyone keeps a distance from him due to his overwhelming and curt attitude.

Yakumo Koizumi

Voice Actor: Shinnosuke Tachibana

Although a foreigner born in Greece and raised in Ireland, he loves Japan. He calls himself by the Japanese name Yakumo Koizumi. He may look polite and cheerful on the outside, but he’s actually rather scheming. He makes his living teaching English at the Tokyo Imperial University, but it seems his hobby is researching Japanese ghosts and he is always collecting information on them.

Tousuke Iwasaki

Voice Actor: Yoshimasa Hosoya

A man who fell in love with the wonders of New York whilst travelling there and researches electricity at Keio University. True to his word and hates anything illogical. He may seem like a calm person, but apparently he has a surprisingly passionate side to him. Apparently, there was an incident in his past involving ghosts...

Charlie

Voice Actor: Toshiyuki Morikawa

A self-proclaimed magician who is full of mystery. He acts as a guide for the heroine and also acts as a navigator for the story. It was Charlie who made Mei travel through time. He goes by many other names.
