What Happened in Season 2?
What started as a manga in 1994 has been made into previous anime adaptations, but Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi: Kimluck-hen (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Battle of Kimluck) is worth the watch! This new season, which centers around the Battle of Kimluck, is an action-packed adventure about secrets of history and the church. Season two picks up three months after the end of season one, with our heroes meandering towards new adventures, though not very productively.
Orphen journeys to the holy city of Kimluck, believing that is where he will find his enigma of a sister, Azalie. Though he is following his personal desires, our hero finds himself at the center of hundreds of years of destiny coming to fruition. With drama unfolding around Orphen, he finds that his friends' continued support and company might be the edge he needs to get through his next ordeal: saving humanity.
What You Can Look Forward To
The Story
If you like a story whose 'other world' building is dense, the Battle of Kimluck is for you. It can seem like the story is throwing too much information at the viewer at one point, but the show seems to understand that, and they counteract that by repeating the data several times over multiple episodes before it becomes relevant. So relax and enjoy the ride! In addition to this, we are loving the character growth! Orphen was a person others leaned on heavily in season one, and he is plenty powerful. Still, after getting a mental block, he must reconcile with his morals and abilities if he ever wants to use magic again.
Magic and Fantasy!
One thing that this season of Orphen's adventures has as an advantage over previous publications is the advancement in animation! The animations for portraying magic are beautiful and varied. There are different variations of sorcery, and today's animation techniques certainly bring out these moments. As mentioned before, Orphen cannot use magic, so his pupil, Magick, tries to protect him. He comes close to destroying himself in the process.
In addition to the visual aspect, we enjoyed the continuation of Cleao and her cat/dragon, Leki. Leki is a powerful beast, and he loves Cleao. He usually does not help unless asked to, but his abilities are powerful, and this beast is a baby, so the answers are generally unexpected and not helpful. This was a comic any enjoyable adventure in 2020's season of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. In season two, we were happy to see that this continued but was not overdone! If you enjoy fantasy and magic, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Battle of Kimluck delivers on this.
Characters
While it is very tempting to speak about just a few specific characters, what is more interesting about this anime is the wide variety of different people encountered and their contributions. Though the story is most centrally around Orphen's need to reconcile with his sister, the Battle of Kimluck contains many periphery characters who are well done.
Of course, there are heroes and villains, but there are mysterious characters that are never seen, like Azalie. It also has lots of people who have died but somehow still impact what is currently happening, like Childman. The comedic relief comes in the form of Orphen's friends and two dwarves, who are gag characters from season one. The season balances the seriousness of the main adventure with the levity that these good-hearted fools bring with them.
Final Thoughts
If you happened upon this post by mistake and haven't watched it, this has been an enjoyable shounen work that is heavy on the fantasy and plot. Like One Piece, even though the main character impacts the entire world with what they do, the main character is only there for their own reasons. They also place lots of value on their freedom.
