When he was younger, Daisuke Toujima and his friends were involved in an incident that changed their lives forever. Now in high school, Daisuke is always ready for the worst, preparing his body and mind for anything. One day while they were at school, Daisuke, his friends, and the rest of their classmates were transported 300 years into the future. The future world they find themselves in i filled with nothing but rundown buildings and deadly mechanical monsters called "Revisions." With the help of a woman named Milo, Daisuke and his friends Gai, Ru, Marimari, and Keisaku fight against the monsters as they search for a way to return home.

1. Similar Setups

Both anime focus on a group of kids that find themselves thrown into a dangerous new world. After learning about what is happening around them, the kids gain powers to fight against the mysterious creatures. From there the stories develop into something much intense and darker than what anyone would expect.

2. Dark and Heavy Stories

Similar to how Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica isn't your typical magical girl anime, revisions isn't your typical mech anime. revisions goes a much darker route than you would think and doesn't shy away from telling a serious story or killing of its characters. Egao no Daika tells the story of two Kingdoms who are on the brink of war. Harlant is a bustling nation where everyone is able to prosper. However, the same can not be said for the neighboring country of Grandiga, who seeks to take control of Harlant's land. Despite the impending war, Yuki, the princess of Harlant, has continued to live a happy live alongside her bodyguard Joshua. Unfortunately for Yuki, her happy days soon come to an end as she learns about the war and what it means for her people.

Major Similarities Between Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and Egao no Daika (The Cost of Smiles, The Price of Smiles)

1. The Main Characters

Egano no Daika tells its story from two different perspectives, looking at the lives of Yuki and Stella. The way Yuki and Stella are used in Egano no Daika is similar to how Madoka and Homura are used in Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Yuki plays a similar role to Madoka with around her as she happily goes about her life unaware of the truth to what is going on. Stella, on the other hand, is similar to Homura due to her having been deeply impacted by the war and suffered immense psychological trauma because of it.

2. From Lighthearted to Serious Real Quick

The stories of both Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica and Egao no Daika set themselves up to look like fun shows with just a little bit of action. However, after a few episodes, both shows undergo a shift in tone and get real serious. After that, the main characters begin to understand the stakes of their situations and the show goes all in on its more serious story.

Final Thoughts

Egao no Daika and revisions may not have any magical girls or wish-granting alien cats, but they do have some dark and depressing stories that will have you holding back tears.
