Synopsis
In the world of Shaman King, extraordinary individuals called shamans exist who can commune with gods, spirits and ghosts. Every 500 years shamans from all over the world compete against each other in a tournament known as the Shaman Fight, to be crowned the next Shaman King -- the ruler of all creation who has the power to reshape the world as they see fit.
One night Manta Oyamada meets a boy named Yoh Asakura at a cemetery. Yoh is a transfer student at Shinra Private Academy and a shaman. Through a fateful encounter with a 600-year-old samurai ghost named Amidamaru, Yoh’s potential to become the Shaman King is revealed. On his journey to become the Shaman King, he comes across Tao Ren and numerous other rivals.
Two giant comets streak through the night sky signaling the start of the Shaman Fight and the wheels of fate begin to turn. Will Yoh reign victorious and take the throne as the next Shaman King?
Characters & Voice Actors
Yoh Asakura: Yoko Hikasa
A young boy with the ability to see ghosts, who comes to Tokyo by himself in order to compete in the Shaman Fight. He’s a laid-back guy and with an “everything will work out” kind of mentality. He believes that anyone who can see ghosts cannot be a bad person and befriends his rivals. His guardian ghost is a 600-year-old samurai named Amidamaru.
Amidamaru: Katsuyuki Konishi
The spirit of a feared samurai once known as “The Fiend.” A master swordsman who created his own Amida-style swordsmanship, comprised of exceptionally powerful techniques. He’s stirred by Yoh’s warm and friendly character and decides to become his guardian ghost. He’s extremely loyal to Yoh and they share a strong bond. He wields a katana named Harusame, meaning “spring rain.”
Anna Kyoyama: Megumi Hayashibara
Yoh’s fiancé and an itako, a traditional shaman, who is capable of summoning spirits freely. She has a cool and mysterious aura to her, but she’s actually so tough that no one wants to defy her. However, she also has a kind and sensitive side to her that she usually doesn’t show to others.
Manta Oyamada: Inuko Inuyama
A 7th grade boy who attends Shinra Private Academy. He becomes Yoh’s first human friend. After meeting Yoh, Manta becomes able to see ghosts but doesn’t develop any shaman abilities. Often getting dragged into trouble by Yoh and random ghosts, he has a tendency to make quips to whatever they say.
Tao Ren: Romi Paku
A son of the distinguished Tao family of shamans who have been active in the shadows of China’s history for 2,000 years. He is a highly skilled shaman and excellent fighter. He has a short temper and a strong sense of pride, but puts the work in to measure up to his high standards. He is easily identified by his spiked “tongari” hairstyle.
Bason: Kousuke Takaguchi
Serving the Tao family since birth, he is a military commander who leads cavalry units into battle. He uses a kwan dao, a weapon resembling a halberd, and is skilled in close combat. At first glance, he is seemingly quiet and reserved, but he has intense human emotions and cares deeply for his master, Ren. He used to fight together with his beloved horse, Kokuto.
Ryunosuke Umemiya: Masahiko Tanaka
He always carries a wooden sword with him and rocks a very unflattering pompadour hairstyle. His street name is “Wooden Sword Ryu,” and he is a well-known gang leader. Together with his underlings, he is searching for his own “best place.” He has an unruly attitude but once he considers someone his friend, he is very kind and loyal.
Tokagerou: Wataru Takagi
A violent and cruel leader of a band of thieves who picked a fight with Amidamaru but was struck down. His desire to exact revenge on Amidamaru prevents him from passing on to the spirit realm, so he bides his time waiting for an opportunity to strike once again. He is rather skinny and his defining features are his green skin and long hair tied messily into a top-knot.
Horohoro: Yuji Ueda
A shaman from Hokkaido who comes all the way to Tokyo to compete in the Shaman Fight. He’s a cheerful and fiery guy who always has a headband or towel wrapped around his forehead. He wants to become the next Shaman King to make a certain dream come true.
Kororo: Megumi Nakajima
A koropokkuru, an ice and earth spirit who is Horohoro’s partner. She is tiny in stature and has a butterbur leaf which she uses as an umbrella. She has the ability to freeze anything and uses her ice powers to fight. She is always with Horohoro and holds him near and dear.
Tao Jun: Michiko Neya
Ren’s older sister. She is a Daoshi who can reanimate corpses and control them to fight for her. From an early age, Jun has looked after Ren, acting as his teacher and trainer. She treats her guardian ghost as nothing more than a tool and uses her Jufu talisman to seal away the spirit’s consciousness, giving her complete control over him. She is very knowledgeable of the human body because of her ability to reanimate corpses.
Lee Pai Long: Tooru Sakurai
Jun’s guardian ghost who is actually a reanimated corpse. When he was alive, he was a kung fu movie star skilled in the fighting style of Daodando, a combination of boxing, Muay Thai and karate.
Faust Ⅷ: Takehito Koyasu
Faust is a necromancer from Germany. His actual job is that of a very skilled doctor. He has a lot of knowledge when it comes to medicine, and combined with his necromancy he’s a very powerful character. He takes part in the shaman fight in order to resurrect his wife.
Lyserg Diethel: Yoko Sawaume
Lyserg is a shaman from London. He is often mistaken for a girl because of his pretty looks. He inherited his speciality in dowsing from his dad, and his skills are high so he's often able to corner his enemy.
Chocolove McDonell: Motoko Kumai
Chocolove is an African-American shaman. He aims to become the best comedian in the world, but his jokes are often corny and they usually bomb with his friends. His shaman skills are rather wild, and in battle he moves freely before cutting through his enemies with his sharp nails.
Tamao Tamamura: Nana Mizuki
Tamao is a young girl who’s training to become an ascetic priest. She’s very shy and isn’t good at talking with people, so she often uses her sketchbook to communicate. She’s been living with the Asakura family since she was four years old, so housekeeping skills are very high.
Ponchi: Takumu Miyazono
Ponchi is a tanuki spirit who has served the Asakura family for 400 years. He pulls a lot of indecent jokes, along with his buddy Conchi, which constantly make their current master Tamao blush.
Conchi: Noriaki Kanze
Ponchi is a fox spirit who has served the Asakura family for 400 years. He pulls a lot of indecent jokes, along with his buddy Ponchi, which constantly make their current master Tamao blush.

Silva: Hikaru Midorikawa
A young man with long, black hair and black eyes who hails from the Patch Tribe. Even among his tribe, which is responsible for overseeing the Shaman Fight, Silva is particularly powerful and a member of the Ten Officiants. He fights using five spirits that inhabit the various totems he wears, each changing his appearance when summoned.
Calim: Eiji Hanawa
A stone-faced pillar of wisdom and reason, Calim and Silva are good friends. His many talents and good sense make him well-liked within the Patch Tribe. Calim’s guardian ghost is a bull named Black Sickle.
Mosuke: Masakazu Morita
Mosuke was Amidamaru’s best friend. He spent his young years at a temple for orphaned children, where he became friends with Amidamaru. He crafted the sword Harusame for Amidamaru.
