Tejina-senpai (Magical Sempai) – Introduction and Story
An unenthusiastic, unmotivated student is starting his term at Tanenashi High. It’s the time of year when students need to find a club to join and are required to do so. Desperate to join a club that requires little to no participation, our friend stumbles across the magic clubroom. He notices a cute girl practicing some magic tricks, although with little success.
Sempai suffers from extreme stage fright and as a result, she flubs her performances and ends up in the most awkward and embarrassing situations. With little interest in magic, our friend, “Assistant” is now a member of the magic club. The two of them attempt to recruit members and accomplish every magic trick known to man, of course, with Sempai failing epically.
1. Reviving a Lost Art
We often see anime series that contain magic, but very few exist that are about magic. Harry Houdini, the Masked Magician, David Blaine, just to name a few, are the folks who taught us that “the hand is quicker than the eye!” Even though Sempai certainly doesn’t fall into these ranks, Tejina-senpai is a gal dedicated to this performing art. We never see the pros flub their tricks, but whenever Sempai attempts even one, the occasion becomes hilarious.
2. A Mixed, Lively Bunch
Sempai is a magic enthusiast. Assistant is one who tries to slither by in magic club but ends up carrying the club’s luck. Madara-san, a girl who is devoted to science, noting that something can’t appear from anywhere. Saki-chan has a sibling conflict and Ma-kun says the funniest things to Assistant. Together, these are our friends we see in each episode. Every person is a unique character, recognizable and has a flair for the dramatic. Although there isn’t a concrete storyline, Tejina-senpai and its antics give us lots to laugh about.
1. No Direction
Will Assistant figure out how Sempai can nail her first trick with skill and luck? What sort of mess will Sempai get into this time? Magical Sempai is a bit repetitious in that Sempai’s constant failing gets a little worn out. Although Magical Sempai is a series meant to be fun and simple, viewers may wish for more character and story development and seeing Sempai actually nail a trick. Even though they step out of the school for a few episodes, like the beach or shopping for swimsuits, we expect the same song and dance to happen to our characters. So if you want something with depth, Tejina-senpai is one you should skip.
Final Thoughts
It’s the final curtain call. Will Tejina-senpai be greeted with encores or tomatoes? This anime is fun and straightforward. Its uncomplicated nature sprinkled with cleavage and crotches leave viewers feeling good. So what do you say? Do you agree or disagree with our assessment? Let us know by sharing your comments! See ya!
