Within the wonderful world of animation, human bodies need not be constrained by pesky things like gravity or physics. And since fanservice sells, many anime studios have decided that the best way to draw attention to their shows is to enhance their female characters’ natural breast movements to such ridiculous magnitudes that they can be detected on the Richter scale. And thus, a quintessential law of anime was created: “Why have normal boobs when you can have anti-gravity boobs?” Today, we’ll touch on the storied history of anime boob physics and highlight a few of our favorite examples in the medium. Join us, won’t you?
Back in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, Gainax was well known for its Otaku no Video and Daicon shorts, both of which heavily featured cute girls in Playboy bunny costumes. Their breasts would bounce all over the place at the slightest provocation, which prompted fans to dub these jiggly movements “Gainaxing”. This obsession with bountiful bouncing boobies continued with Gunbuster, FLCL, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and even a few moments in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Although Gainax has fallen from grace in recent years, its mastery of mammaries lives on to inspire a new generation.
Best Moments for Crazy Boob Physics
Gainax’s spiritual successor Studio Trigger pays homage to its forefathers by parodying the idea of fanservice-driven anime with Kill la Kill. Ryuko and Satsuki’s stripperific costumes leave absolutely nothing to the imagination, especially in their transformation sequences where their boobs fly every which way as their life fiber armor squeezes into place around their unrealistic figures.
Another great example is Fairy Tail! With the exception of Wendy and later depictions of Levy, every single female character in this anime is built like a Victoria’s Secret model. What’s more, they seem to have no issues wearing strapless tops, backless dresses, triangle bikinis, and other revealing outfits that would leave no room for a bra. There must be some secret gravity-defying magic in this world that keeps these ladies’ boobs perky and perfect at all times!
And what about High School of the Dead? Even if you’ve never sat down to watch this hypersexualized zombie anime, you’re practically guaranteed to know the infamous scene where the main character uses a girl’s chest to steady his shotgun. Her breasts ripple from the recoil, and another girl narrowly avoids a stray shot by leaning back and undulating her boobs in such a way that the bullet flies straight between them sideways. There’s no way that bullets, fabric, or especially breasts would work that way in real life, but that’s what makes this anime so insanely amazing!
We also love the mad mammary flapping in Gravion, the flabbergasting jiggle of Zero-Two’s titanic breasts when she transforms into Strelizia True Apus in Darling in the FranXX, and the endless hilarity of hentai bodies, but for now we must end our exploration of boob physics. However, it still remains as one of the legendary laws of anime, so it will doubtlessly continue to grace our eyes for as long as the medium exists.
