Wishing somebody to die may sound quite harsh, but when it comes to anime characters, it isn’t that cruel to wish some of them dead. Admittedly, there are many characters that get on our nerves so we think the show would be much better without them. There are also characters whom we don’t exactly hate, but their deaths would cause the storyline to flow in the way we want to. Hence, wishing a character to die is not always out of hatred and annoyance. Here’s 10 anime characters you wish would die.
10. Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2
- Episodes: 161
- Aired: Apr. 1989 – Sep. 1992
Akane Tendo is one of the three daughters of Soun Tendo. She is a tomboy who likes martial arts. She is very short-tempered and is prone to jealousy. Akane is insecure about being not feminine enough but she has her fair share of admirers as she is considered attractive.
Akane has got to be one of the most annoying main characters there are. She just beats up Ranma all the time instead of trying to listen to his explanations first. Akane does not seem happy with her engagement with Ranma, but she always tries to prevent other women from flirting with Ranma! Akane is always referred to as cute, but we really don’t see that in her. If she were dead, Ranma would have been able to pick another fiancée out of the many better girls who are interested in him.
9. Kamiya Kaoru from Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X)
- Episodes: 94
- Aired: Jan. 1996 – Sep. 1998
Kamiya Kaoru is the main female character in Rurouni Kenshin. She owns a dojo and allows Kenshin to stay at her dojo, thereby ending Kenshin’s 10-year wandering period. Kaoru has a fiery temper and she is often unable to come up with a wittier retort when she is struck with an insult, which often results in her becoming angrier and making herself look like a fool.
Kaoru is annoying because she just likes to interfere with everything. Even when she and Kenshin do not have any romantic relationship yet, Kaoru always tries to interfere when Megumi is flirting with Kenshin. Being the owner of a dojo, one would expect her to be somewhat strong but she is very weak and practically useless in combat. Kaoru ends up being the one who is always crying and needs rescuing. We want her dead because we prefer if Kenshin ends up single or with another woman.
8. Satomi Murano from Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte -the maxim-)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct. 2014 – Mar. 2015
Satomi Murano is Shinichi’s best friend who later becomes his love interest. For most of the series, Satomi does not know about Migi’s presence so despite knowing the changes in Shinichi’s personality, she has no clue what’s going on. Satomi has short, dark, maroon hair and is considered quite attractive in her school.
Satomi does not like how Shinichi has changed so she keeps on repeating the same lines every episode about how Shinichi has changed. The change was not vast anyway and Shinichi still cares about her, so we are so frustrated with how she just keeps on complaining about it instead of trying to be understanding. We want her dead so the series would be a lot more fun to watch without a major annoyance. We prefer is Satomi dies and Kana lives instead, as the latter is a more understanding person who seems to be more compatible with Shinichi.
7. Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto Shippuuden
- Episodes: Unknown
- Aired: Feb. 2007 - ?
Sasuke is one of the last surviving member of the Uchiha clan. In Konohagakure, he is added to Team 7 alongside Naruto and Sakura, under the guidance of Kakashi. After his family was killed by his elder brother, Itachi, Sasuke developed a cold and vengeful personality. He left Konohagakure after encountering Itachi again.
Part of the reason we want Sasuke dead is so that Naruto and Sakura can stop shouting his name. Sasuke is supposed to be a highly intelligent person but he can’t comprehend what he’s doing is wrong. After finding out that the whole thing about his clan isn’t as he thought, Sasuke still does not want to go back to his village and be the nice guy. He seriously needs to grow up instead of being the emo kid who thinks his life is the worst and that nobody can understand him.
6. Yuki Cross from Vampire Knight
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Apr. 2008 – Jul. 2008
Yuki Cross is a student at Cross Academy’s Day Class where she is also a School Guardian. Yuki admires Kaname for saving her from a vampire, but the trauma of being attacked by a vampire makes her cautious of them. Yuki seems to develop feelings for Zero as well. It is later revealed that Yuki is a Pureblood vampire.
How do you know when an anime is catered towards the female audience? It is when the main female character is crazily idolized by more than one guy, even though she hardly has any redeeming qualities. Yuki can’t even choose a guy to settle down with so she ends up having kids with both of them. The plot almost sounds as wtf as Twilight. If only she died before all the mess and the guys found better partners.
5. Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Oct. 2006 – Jul. 2007
Before Britannian invaded Japan, Lelouch mentioned that Suzaku used to have a somewhat selfish personality. After Japan was invaded, his personality changes. Suzaku has a strong sense of loyalty and does not support rebellion or terrorism, which he thinks leads to pointless killing. After the death of Euphemia, Suzaku resolves to kill Zero.
We wish he were dead because he keeps messing up with Lelouch’s plans. Suzaku is self-righteous and is willing to betray his friend, Lelouch. Suzaku is like a goodie-two-shoes who has been brainwashed about what is right and wrong. It’s true that without him, there wouldn’t be Code Geass, so we don’t want him to die right from the beginning. We wish that he was the one who died in the end instead of Lelouch.
4. Near from Death Note
- Episodes: 37
- Aired: Oct. 2007 – Jun. 2007
Near is one of the two successors of L. After L died, Near takes on the role to investigate Kira’s case. Near is highly intelligent and has a childish demeanor. He was raised in Watari’s orphanage for gifted children. He has white hair, grey eyes, and is always seen in a white top and white pants.
We don’t hate Near at all. He is not at all annoying. He is very much like L in his demeanor but he lacks the charisma of L so Near is not a very interesting opponent of Light Yagami. We want Near dead because we want Light to be alive and prevail in his idea of justice. Most of us would prefer if sick criminals in the world die. However, it is such a letdown that the series takes on a politically correct approach and shows us that a person like Light isn’t ideal. In order to support this politically correct approach, the series also decided to give Light a more evil persona in which Light ends up killing more than just criminals. If it wasn’t for people like Near and the police force, Light would not end up on that path and die.
3. Kyubey from Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan. 2011 – Apr. 2011
Kyubey looks very much like a white cat, except that it has an extra pair of ears. He is an alien known as the “incubator”. His alien race does not show emotions so Kyubey has a cold, calculating persona. His speech patterns suggest that he is either rude or truly does not understand the need to be polite.
Kyubey looks deceptively cute, so those of you who have not watched Puella Magi would be surprised by how we could wish this character to die. He does not have compassion for personal suffering, and that sounds ok since there are many cold characters in anime series. However, Kyubey is more like a psychopath. He is heartless enough to manipulate little girls into signing contracts to rip out their souls. Still think this cute douchebag is better off alive?
2. Pan from Dragon Ball GT
- Episodes: 64
- Aired: Feb. 1996 – Nov. 1997
Pan is the granddaughter of Son Goku. Unlike her male relatives that have Saiyan blood, Pan is unable to transform into a Super Saiyan, despite being trained in martial arts. Therefore, she is a pretty weak fighter in the Dragon Ball GT universe. She is short-tempered and simple mistakes get lead to her getting angry and throwing tantrums.
Dragon Ball GT is such a disappointment that we believe one of the main reasons is attributed to Pan being a main character. There are other annoying characters in Dragon Ball like Chi Chi, but at least they stay in the background. Pan is weak, yet she likes to boss everyone around. We wish she had died and not resurrected, and had her position being replaced by a stronger character who is not whiny.
1. Excalibur from Soul Eater
- Episodes: 51
- Aired: Apr. 2008 – Mar. 2009
Excalibur is a Legendary Blade that is known to be the most powerful weapon in the world. Those who are able to utilize Excalibur for a period long enough would be heralded as a hero or a king, not only due to the fact that the weapon is powerful, but also due to it having a personality that is difficult for anyone to get along with.
Excalibur from Soul Eater is highly narcissistic and annoying. This annoying behavior is why he hardly has any partners as there are not many people who are able to withstand him. Being the viewers of the series, we can see how a pain in the neck Excalibur is, and we are already tired on him. His repeated exclamation of “fool!” rivals the annoyance of Naruto’s declaration of “believe it!”. Hence, either Excalibur needs to die or his personality needs to die in order to make us watch the series with ease.
And there you have it, our top characters whom we wish would die. Pretty much in every anime series, there is at least one character whom we are not very fond of, and at times, we dislike them strong enough to wish them death. Who else comes to mind when you think of characters who should die? Let us know!
