Top 10 Anime Maids

Maid outfits and anime walk hand in hand. Whether it's for the kawaii or the sexiness factor, many writers seem to like reaching for this type of character. They can be purely helpful, bodyguards in disguise, secret lovers and come in varied ages and genders.

Today, we bring you anime's Top 10 Anime Maids. Just so you know, we're not just talking about girls in maid outfits, like in cafés and such, but actual maids who do housework and look after people. But their ability to clean a room isn't the only qualification to make our list, oh no; these maids need to prove that there's something else that's special about them. And boy, have they ever! Curious? Come and find out who we think are the best maids in anime!

10. Mei-Rin from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Oct. 2008 – Mar. 2009

In Victorian England lives Ciel Phantomhive, the untimely heir to his family's fortune after a dark incident left him orphaned. During said incident, he swore revenge and made a pact with a demon to achieve it. That demon is Sebastian, little Ciel's own demon butler who will aid him as well as he can until he can claim Ciel's soul for himself.

Ciel also has another faithful servant, Mei-Rin, (sometimes Meilin). She is the nervous, cute and bespectacled maid of the mansion and she's actually terrible at her job, as she wears glasses that don't fit her, is extremely clumsy – especially around Sebastian - and seems to know nothing about being a maid. The reason she made the list is because she's so adorable and is entirely devoted to her master Ciel and doing as Sebastian asks. Oh, and the fact that she has a cool secret past as a badass sniper gives her bonus points! 😉

9. Roberta from Black Lagoon

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2006 – Jun. 2006

Black Lagoon follows the mercenary group of the same name in the Thai city of Roanapur, a lawless no-man's-land filled with murder, crime and all that is seedy. When Rokuro Okajima, a Japanese businessman ends up in said city, he is caught by Black Lagoon. Eventually, Rokuro becomes a part of Black Lagoon.

The Lovelace family is a powerful South American family. Roberta is their maid of several years and, even though her actual maid skills are not the best, she has an unmatched devotion towards her master and his son and would do anything to keep them protected. Luckily, she's an ex-terrorist and assassin and probably one of the strongest and deadliest women in the series. And that's why, despite her lacking in the actual maid department, her badassedness (yes, that's a word) puts her on spot 9 on our list.

8.Maid-chan from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (The Pet Girl of Sakuraso)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Air Date: Oct. 2012 – Mar. 2013

Sorata Kanda is such a good guy that he can't just leave homeless kittens out on the street. But pets aren't allowed in his dormitory, so he's sent to the Sakuraso Dorm, where all the weirdos and misfits live. But hey, they allow pets! The plan is to find homes for the kittens and move back, but then the homeless-kitten-like Mashiro Shiina moves in with her cuteness and inability to care for herself. And now Sorata has a new pet to take care of... Maybe Sakuraso and its crazies aren't so bad after all!

Ryuunosuke is a student at Suiko like Sorata, but she's a shut-in techie and even has an Ai to reply to her emails and messages. In fact, this program's name is Maid-chan and Ryuunosuke keeps upgrading her to the point that Maid-chan becomes a self-contained AI with an adorable 3D form, and is able to reply, decide and give advice by using data found on the internet. She interacts with many of the other students, and as Ryuunosuke's online voice, she is part of the group. While her abilities are limited to electronic data and communication, you have to admit she's the kind of maid many of us would love to have at our disposal!

7. Miyuki Kujou from Shomin Sample (Ore ga Ojousama Gakkou ni "Shomin Sample" Toshite Gets♥Sareta Ken)

Seikain Academy is an all-girls school attended by young high society ladies. In order to ease the girls into the real world, the school decides to bring in a “Commoner Sample”. Enter Kimito Kagurazaka, a boy who is mistaken for a muscle-loving gay man, which makes him perfect as a sample, since he poses no threat to the ladies. However, he really isn't into men at all, much less muscley ones! But if the school finds out that he isn't gaga for men, they will literally castrate him. So on with the show!

Every girl in the school gets their own personal maid, and not to be left out, Kimito gets his own maid too, Miyuki Kujou. She is in charge of both taking care Kimito and his needs, as well as making sure he doesn't do anything shady. And while she can be a little sadistic towards Kimito, she really does take care of him and even watches over him as he sleeps. Miyuki is clever, an excellent maid, and is in charge of others in the school. There seems to be more to her than meets the eye, as most other maids respect her. And that mysterious side of her, as well as her great abilities as a maid, are exactly why she won a spot on our list.

6. Canti from FLCL

Naota grows a horn on his head, his brother's ex-girlfriend won't stop clinging to him and more stuff comes out of his head!

One of the crazy things to come out of Naota's head, is Canti, a medical robot. From his arrival, he shows to be helpful and polite. He basically serves as the maid in the Nandaba household. Canti does the dishes, makes dinner, does laundry and is generally helpful to everybody, all while wearing an apron. He even cares for and is polite to Haruko and Naota's dad, both of whom are just awful to him! He's a better maid than some of the other ones on the list mentioned above, and wouldn't you love to have a robot maid!? That's exactly why Canti made the list.

5. Virgo from Fairy Tail

  • Episodes: 175
  • Vired: Oct. 2009 – Mar. 2013

In a world where mages and magic guilds are a thing, Lucy Heartfilia is a young aspiring mage looking to join her most admired guild, Fairy Tail. Once she meets the guild members and becomes one of them, they will together fulfill requests to earn money, go on adventures, and grow as mages while they're at it!

Lucy is a Celestial Spirit Mage, which means she can summon spirits and use their magic in battle, or for anything really. Virgo is one of Lucy's celestial spirits and she is as loyal as the rest of Lucy's team, but she's much more obedient, and would do anything and everything that her “princess” Lucy asks. She's also a masochist and so is always looking for a spanking from Lucy whether she was good or bad. On top of that, her chains and magic are very useful in a fight!

4. Tama from Gintama

  • Episodes: 201
  • Vired: Apr. 2006 – Mar. 25 2010

Gintoki is a samurai living in feudal Japan. A feudal Japan that has been invaded by aliens! As a result of the successful alien invasion, swords are prohibited and samurai are all but extinct. Being a manga-obsessed, sweets-loving samurai, Gintoki finds a way to make ends meet and continue indulging in his pastimes by working as a handyman along with several other colorful characters with whom he becomes close with.

Tama is a robot maid with human emotions that works for Otose, Gintoki's landlord. She has the wonderful combination of being programmed as a maid, which means she's excellent at it, and human emotions to make her feel like just another human being. Maybe a strange one, but human nonetheless. On top of that, she can communicate with electronics when they're on the fritz! Wouldn't it be lovely to have a maid that can just talk your Nintendo Switch when it crashes and get it to work properly!? Though we may pass on using her cooking setting, since she prepares food within her, and... vomits it out... Monjayaki, anyone? x_x

Maria is the smartest person in the house and she is basically in charge of the mansion. She is kind-hearted, a hard worker, very responsible and she loves to play games. You'd be hard pressed to find such a well-rounded maid anywhere else!

2. Chihiro from Shounen Maid

When Chihiro Komiya's parents pass away, he is left in the care of his handsome, rich uncle, Madoka Takatori. When Chihiro moves into Madoka's mansion, he's horrified at what a disgusting mess the place is, so he takes it upon himself to clean it up. Being that he is obsessed with cleanliness, this comes easily to him and actually makes him happy. Madoka quickly comes up with the idea to dress Chihiro up in a maid's uniform and pay him a salary to work as the live-in maid of the house.

We couldn't have a list of the best maids without including this cute little guy. Raised under his mother's motto of “no work, no food”, it's no surprise that he is such a disciplined hard worker. It's also the reason Madoka had to make a deal with him to convince him to live with him by offering him to work as a maid to earn his keep, so to speak. Being a neat-freak, he makes for a wonderful maid and his cooking skills are very impressive, especially for an elementary school kid. Chihiro is a sweet, honest and hardworking maid boy that anyone would be lucky to have!

Author: Lizzy Nyanko

An otaku as far as I can remember. I grew up playing video games, watching anime in Spanish in Mexico where I grew up, and then was a member of both anime clubs at UTEP for my entire university life when I moved to Texas. I love going to cons, I used to cosplay (always hoping to get back into it), and I got to live in Japan for 2 years and be an otaku there! It was literally a dream come true! Now back in the US, I love being a writer and editor for Honey’s. It’s a great chance to keep up with all the latest anime each season and up to date with all otaku news. And without our readers, that wouldn’t be possible so, thank you for being a part of our hive!!
