[Fujoshi Friday] Top 10 Bishounen Pairings in Anime 2017

As we look back on 2017, it's important to think of what that year meant to us. For some of us, it marks wonderful events in our lives that we'll fondly look back on. For others, it provided much-needed fujoshi fuel in terms of anime boys. While one beautiful boy is good, a pairing serves to complement and contrast the individual person's appeal. We may not be able to find exactly 10 committed openly gay couples, but we can certainly find pairs of dudes that stir our imagination. Let's take a look at the top 10 bishounen pairings of anime from 2017!

10. Hideyoshi and Nobunaga from Ikemen Sengoku: Toki wo Kakeru ga Koi wa Hajimaranai (Ikemen Sengoku: Bromances Across Time)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

High school boy Sasuke ends up in a most unimaginable situation... he is transported 500 years in the past and comes face to face with the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven, Nobunaga Oda! Realizing he's somehow wound up in the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period of Japanese history), it seems Sasuke has no choice but to try to fit in with the times and serve under Nobunaga. But that's not the only warlord he must contend with! Famous men like Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Mitsuhide Akechi, Tokugawa Ieyasu and more take an interest in Sasuke and he must use his knowledge of the future to make things more... fun??

Ikemen Sengoku was originally a mobage (mobile game) where the player takes the role of a girl from the future that is transported back in time (Sasuke is another character who is also transported back in time and is a dating option). In the anime, however, there are no girls! Only cute chibi versions of your favorite daimyo (warlords) running around and learning to rap. It's also rife with unrequited love! Hideyoshi's devotion to Nobunaga is a little bit more than a vassal-master relationship. His 'power moves' names all contain Nobunaga's name, he only wants to decorate the castle with art featuring Nobunaga, and he can't stand anyone cozying up to his precious master! Nobunaga gets annoyed at the constant doting but regardless keeps Hideyoshi at his side. For a guy as no-nonsense as Nobunaga, that's saying something!

9. Aoi Yusuke and Aoi Kyosuke from The iDOLM@STER SideM

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Oct 2017 – Dec 2017

If you're a fan of numerous shipping opportunities with a musical twist, you're in for a good time. Possibly the most shippable boys would be victims of a forbidden love! Yusuke and Kyosuke are twins, and formerly soccer stars. They do everything together and are never happier than when they are playing or talking with each other. Obvious they're equally attractive and their prankster personalities endear them to others. These two who love soccer so much know that there is only one thing that means more to them, and that's always being together. If you have a thing for redheaded twins like Hikaru and Kaoru from Ouran High School Host Club, you'll like seeing these two brothers become even closer!

8. Tomoki and Youichi from Dive!!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

When Tomoki was a young boy, he saw what he described as a hero defeating a concrete dragon. In reality, it was a high diving prodigy executing a beautiful dive from high above. This boy, Youichi, saw Tomoki's fascination and invited him to join the Mizuki Diving Club. There Tomoki would become addicted to the fear and excitement of diving. Years later, however, the MDC is on the verge of being shut down unless one of their students can get into the Japanese Olympic diving team. While previously a boy of no ambition, Tomoki finds he wants to take up the challenge not only to save his beloved club but also for himself.

Calling all Free! fans!! This is a younger-looking crowd so it may not necessarily float your boat but boy these boys have some incredible abs. Youichi is a stoic, determined boy who aims for perfection in his dives. Despite being somewhat aloof he seems to have a soft spot for Tomoki. He often smiles when they talk or finds a reason to tease the younger boy, often about women. Tomoki greatly admires Youichi and I known to sing his praises. It's because of Youichi's faith in his abilities that Tomoki believes he too can make it to the Japanese Olympic team.

7. Aki and Narumi from Dynamic Chord

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Oct 2017 – Dec 2017

The world of music is a fierce one, and with so many directions how can one know which will lead them to success? Follow the stories of the various bands under the Dynamic Chord label and see who and what motivates them. Is it possible to keep your professional and personal lives separate, or is it better to interweave them?

Dynamic Chord is another show about beautiful singing men. They're all good to look at but the two that give us the most dokis are Aki and Narumi. They refer to each other affectionately as Aki-nii and Narumi-chan and have been friends since they were children. They've always gotten along until they have their first fight and it's as if they've broken up! Natsumi calls off a joint concert and Aki refuses to talk to him. Yet when the two happen to meet face to face later, they can't keep their feelings contained! They both take the blame for their fight and hug each other tightly! And if you've watched a lot of anime, you know people can come back from the dead and be reunited with their dearest friends and STILL not hug each other. The doting Aki and cheerful Narumi make quite a good pair indeed!

6. Hiraga and Nicholas from Vatican Kiseki Chousakan (Vatican Miracle Examiner)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

Father Hiraga and Father Nicholas work together to investigate any claims of miracles the Vatican deems of importance. Hiraga takes a scientific and mathematical approach while Nicholas' vast knowledge of tomes and texts guides him. Both incredibly devout, they seek to proclaim God's influence or expose heretical claims. Despite their holy calling, they are in constant danger, but through faith in God and each other, they will continue their work.

So perhaps we SHOULDN'T be pairing up men of the cloth, but here we are! Two good-looking young guys work as a team and protect each other from things much worse than non-believers. They truly rely on and respect each other and are willing to bare their souls to each other (and even their fresh-out-of-the-shower bodies!). They touch each other freely whether they are protecting or comforting each other, and would even give up their jobs to shield the other from punishment. Without revealing too much, a beautiful moment transpires between the two when Nicholas learns a terrible secret from his past and asks with tears in his eyes 'Will you hate me now?'. Hiraga only smiles and replies 'I've only grown to like you more and more'. Just how much? we wonder!

5. Goku and Konzen from Saiyuuki Reload Blast (Saiyuki Reload Blast)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

The Sanzo Party, whose goal is to stop the resurrection of a powerful and terrible demon, have made it to India where the experiment is taking place. They've come a long way and fought many battles, but things only become more difficult. The four comrades must steel themselves for the trials to come, but fighting enemies won't be the worst thing they'll encounter.

Konzen doesn't play too large a role in this latest installment of the Saiyuki series, but his presence is felt one way or another (you'll know if you watch!). Goku is alive and kicking in the present day, but a trip to the past reveals our number 5 pairing. Goku was known simply as a monkey born of stone with power too great to leave alone on Earth. Konzen was the nephew of the Merciful Goddess. Partly to cure her own boredom and partly to give Konzen's life meaning, she entrusts the unruly boy to Konzen. Upon their first meeting, Goku says that Konzen is beautiful and shines like the sun. As the days go on Goku shows unprecedented affection and respect for Konzen and Konzen shows care and effort he's never shown in his previous relationships. In fact, it is Konzen that gives Goku his name and tells him that Goku is truly the sun. Despite their undeniable love for each other, their story does not have a happy ending.

4. Dai and Rikka from Tsukipro the Animation

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Oct 2017 – Dec 2017

Tsukino Entertainment Productions is the label under which SOARA, Growth, SolidS, and QUELL thrive. Coming from various backgrounds, these musicians use their skills and knowledge to push their bands ever further along the path to stardom. They've gained more than fulfilling careers; they've gained meaningful relationships to cherish.

There were a LOT of singing boys last year (and we've not even touched on all of them). Here's some more! Dai and Rikka make for a compelling potential couple due to their attractiveness and cute dynamic. Rikka is much like Nanami from Sukisho; the doting and kind mother-like figure who is considerate of everyone's needs before his own while still being a force to reckon with when provoked. Dai is a more quiet and shy man who works hard to catch up to the other members but feels he is constantly lacking. Dai seems somewhat uncomfortable talking about his feelings or expressing affection though Rikka does so easily. When Dai complains about 4 dudes sharing a small car Rikka says he thinks it's nice to sit close and Dai seems a little flustered. If he really making excuses for feeling anxious next to Rikka? They even shoot a commercial where Rikka plays a princess and Dai plays his knight in shining armor. Rikka admits to being overwhelmed by Dai's coolness and their chemistry during the CM gives us a lot to fantasize about!

3. Kane-san and Kunihiro from Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (Katsugeki Touken Ranbu)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

With the threat of history being changed for the worse, the souls of ancient swords are made corporeal and used to fight in units against the Historical Revisionists. They are sent back in time to protect history no matter what, even if it means fighting alongside fellow swords they once battled or allowing harm to befall their former master. It's a tough road but sworn to duty, they will carry out their missions even if it means their own lives are forfeit.

Kunihiro and Kane-san were both carried by the same master, Hijikata Toshizou. The two are very affectionate and friendly with each other despite Kane-san's seniority. When no one else knows what secret feelings Kane-san harbors, Kunihiro knows and can bring a smile back to Kane-san's face. Kane-san serves as the strong role model Kunihiro needs as he is often too emotional and wavers in his judgment. They are a good match for each other and care very deeply for one another. With a bond that cannot be severed by time or distance, they will always come back to each other.

2. Kensuke and Asaya from Hitorijime My Hero (My Very Own Hero)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul 2017 – Sep 2017

Masahiro runs with a rough crowd not because he wants to, but because he's grown accustomed to being someone's dog. It's not as awful as being alone, and he has no such delusions that someone will come along and save him. That is until someone does! Masahiro ends up befriending his hero's younger brother Kensuke and looks up to Kousuke throughout the years. One day Kensuke's childhood friend reappears and seems to want more from Kensuke than the boy realizes!

Kensuke is an amazingly daft boy who misreads the atmosphere constantly. Having once fought with Asaya when they were children and never hearing from him again, Kensuke decides Asaya must not like him at all if he can act so calm at their reunion. However, it is only because he harbors such deep feelings for Kensuke. The two go back and forth, Asaya being forced to be blunt and demanding just to get his feelings through to Kensuke who constantly ignores or misreads his friend's feelings. As they spend more time together they realize their feelings are not so different.

1. Ren and Haru from Super Lovers 2

  • Episodes: 10
  • Air Date: Jan 2017 – Mar 2017

Ren and Haru have gotten used to living together as a family with step-brothers Aki and Shima and running a cafe as well. Despite growing closer, Ren still constantly feels that he is only being looked at as a child, and not as a romantic partner. Haru tends to dote on his little brother constantly and snuggles Ren a lot but still shows some hesitation in taking things further. Can Ren do something to make Haru finally see him as not a brother, but a man?

While it may be an understatement to say their relationship is a little weird, there's no denying how much these two love each other. Ren and Haru are super physically affectionate, Haru liking to dote on his cute little brothers and Ren content to get whatever he can get. While at first content to play the brother role, Ren can't settle for that anymore. It certainly doesn't help that Haru will randomly touch him in un-brotherly-like ways before returning back to the mentality that Ren is too young to do such things. Haru is a super good looking man and Ren is really cute younger guy and together they make the top bishounen pairing for 2017

Final Thoughts

Bishounen are a gift, something to treasure. But why settle for one gift when you can have two?! These pairs of bishounen have left their mark whether they are in a canon relationship or they're just fantasy-inducing friends. Strong, male relationships are a delight to see and more so if they are visually appealing. Thank you 2017, for this bounty. If you think of other noteworthy bishounen pairings, let us know in the comments!

Aoi-Yusuke-Aoi-Kyosuke-The-iDOLMASTER-SideM-Wallpaper-1-504x500 [Fujoshi Friday] Top 10 Bishounen Pairings in Anime 2017

Writer

Author: May

Hey friends! I reside in Georgia and use my degree in Japanese primarily to (barely) read doujinshi that hasn’t been translated. Beyond deciding who is best girl in whatever I happen to be watching, I really enjoy ballroom dancing, reading, crying over dating sims, karaoke, and being surrounded by beautiful things~ (You know, scenery, décor, boys, stuff like that). I also love talking about passions with others!
