What makes a character in an Anime unique and loved by many? It’s partly, of course, the unique abilities that make them special and unmatched in their respective universes. With so much anime based on protagonists with special abilities, it’s hard to keep up with them, so we’ve compiled this list of the Top 10 characters with superhuman abilities, just for you.
Just to be clear, for this list, we’ll be counting down anime characters that are depicted as humans with super abilities. So without further ado, let’s begin!
10. Allen Walker from D.Gray-man
- Episodes: 103
- Aired: Oct. 2006 - Sep. 2008
Starting off this list is the protagonist of D.Gray-man, Allen Walker; a kind teenage boy with the ability to fight demons otherwise known as Akuma. He wields the power known as ‘Innocence’, a rare substance that was cultivated by ancient civilizations, which can bond with certain humans to purify the dark matter from corrupt souls. Innocence is able to have a will of its own, like a living creature, it is able to recognize threats of evil and can even take control over the user to eliminate it.
Allen’s Innocence was embedded into his deformed left arm from birth. Its true form is known as the ‘Crown Clown’, a body-armour type encompassing a cowl, cape, silver mask and a clawed arm. It also gives him the ability to summon the ‘Sword of Exorcism’, a broadsword that is able to purge evil from anything it slices through, but cannot harm humans. The sword acts like an extension of Allen’s own body and he is able to retrieve it telepathically.
His left eye was cursed when it was slashed by Mana, his childhood caretaker who turned into an Akuma; it allows him to distinguish Akuma from humans and can even pinpoint the position of an Akuma even if it’s not visible.
Allen’s Innocence is a parasite type; it is far more advanced than that of other Innocence because of its level of bonding with the host. Allen is an easily lovable character with a strong will to save others and has one of the best kinds of Innocence; this is why he is on this list.
9. Accelerator from Toaru Majutsu No Index (A Certain Magical Index)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct. 2008 - Mar. 2009
The next character with superhuman abilities is from To Aru Majutsu No Index, Accelerator, the top ranked and strongest level 5 Esper of Academy City. Accelerator has the power to generate a field of AIM (An Involuntary Movement), where an Esper is able to involuntarily produce an invisible energy field around themselves. This field allows him to modify the vector values of whatever he touches, meaning that he can change the speed and direction of anything that comes into his range, even if he is unaware of it. He is known to be able to redirect projectiles and even reverse the flow of blood.
Accelerator is also able to awaken wings that allow him to develop angelic-like powers and fly. At first, his wings were black but later turned white as a result of his change of heart. His wings allow him to use them like blades, and are able to do the complex calculations for his vector ability even more quickly for him.
Accelerator’s rough past is what made him into a psychopathic and sadistic-like character. He only trusts in his own power and uses it to evoke fear in others to prevent them from engaging, as it's the only way he sees to stop the fighting. After encounters with Touma, the protagonist, Accelerator slowly comes to a revelation and changes his way of life, which he discovers had been wrong, and uses his power instead to protect people. Accelerator becomes a more caring type of person with a power that is used to help others rather than for just himself. Being able to use such a destructive power to defend others is admirable, which makes him a firm choice on this list.
8. Kurosaki Ichigo from Bleach
- Episodes: 366
- Aired: Oct. 2004 - Mar. 2012
Next on this list is Kurosaki Ichigo, a teenager who gained the powers of a Shinigami, or soul reaper. Ichigo has always had some sort of a special affiliation with the spiritual world from a younger age, but gained the power to fight Hollows, or evil spirits, from a Shinigami named Kuchiki Rukia.
He is able to detach his soul from his body and enter the ‘Shikai’ form, wielding an oversized Khyber knife that is named Zangetsu. Ichigo has a special ability that he uses when wielding his blade; Getsuga Tensho, a crescent shaped energy slash attack. He is also able to use the ‘Bankai’ form, which is an enhanced form he can transform into that allows him greater power and mobility with a lighter black Japanese long sword. Ichigo also has the ability Shunpo, or air step, which allows him to leap great distances quickly.
Ichigo also has the Hollow mask, which allows him to use the strength of a Hollow, feeding off the darkness that resides in his spirit. It gives him enhanced power, speed and durability, at the cost of damaging his body. Ichigo is one of the top characters with superhuman abilities because of his immense power and large heart. There is no limit to the rapid growth of his skills, and he is compassionate to his family and friends, which makes him deserving of a spot on this list.
7. Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul. 2014 - Sep. 2014
Kaneki Ken is a boy who gained the powers of a ghoul from a transplanted ghoul organ known as a ‘Kakuhou’, after being fatally injured by a ghoul named Rize Kamishiro. He obtains the regenerative abilities of a ghoul and increased physical strength, agility, endurance, reflexes and power. Ghouls have a unique predatory organ that can be controlled as a weapon, known as a Kagune, which extends from their body in the form of crimson, flexible-but-firm liquid that resembles blood.
Kaneki’s Kagune is named Rinkaku and it was inherited from Rize’s Kagune, which was known to have an abnormal regenerative aptitude. His Kagune manifests from his back in the form of tentacles that are able transform into various shapes that resemble hands or mouths. They are able to harden at will and become blades that can pierce through enemies. As a ghoul, Kaneki has a higher tolerance to pain and can endure twisting, and breaking of his limbs in fights.
Due to the fact that Kaneki is not a natural born ghoul and only possesses the powers given to him by the organ, being a hybrid makes him apparently a lot stronger than a standard ghoul. His Kagune can also have a will of its own and is able to regenerate in quick succession. Kaneki only wants to protect the people dear to him, even if it means sacrificing himself in the process, his determination and insane power is why he is on this list.
6. Kujo Jotaro from JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Stardust Crusaders (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders)

Star Platinum can also become self-aware and can help Jotaro even when he is unaware of the situation. It has the ability to stop time for up to 5 seconds known as ‘The World’. Its versatility and range of powerful abilities is what makes this stand one of the best in the series, and is a perfect contender on this list, as Jotaro is one of the most loved characters in the series for his cool demeanour and rarely-shown caring manner.
5. Uzumaki Naruto from Naruto: Shippuuden
- Episodes: 496+
- Aired: Feb. 2007 - Ongoing
The next character on the list is the one and only, Uzumaki Naruto, a ninja of the hidden village of Konoha. He is known for being the boy who has the nine-tailed fox beast sealed within him. Naruto has large reserves of chakra, energy within the body that is essential for ninjas to use special techniques. This is from the beast within him, it allows him to use many techniques without fatigue and is able to enhance his physical abilities too. He is able to transform into a special chakra mode that turns his body, and clothes into a flame-like chakra.
One of Naruto’s main abilities is his ninjutsu, a style of ninja technique that generates something physical or elemental by weaving hand signs. The
‘Shadow Clone’ jutsu is one of his most well known techniques that allows him to make weaker duplicates of himself. The other major technique he knows is the ‘Rasengan’, a ball of condensed rotating chakra that is generated in the palm of the hand which, on contact ,grinds and propels the target away from the user.
Naruto is able to use nature energy, which is absorbed from his surroundings and can allow him to use Sage powers. He can also summon and use frog techniques that he also learned from Jiraiya. Naruto is one of the top characters because of his strong will to protect his friends and to become the leader of his village; he works hard and has the mentality of never giving up, which makes him quite admirable.
4. Yu Otosaka from Charlotte
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Jul. 2015 - Sep. 2015
Up next is Yu Otosaka, the protagonist of Charlotte. He is a student at Hoshinoumi Academy and has the most overpowered ability in the universe. At first his ability seems weak, being able to control someone’s body for about 5 seconds. However, when he discovers his true ability, Plunder, he becomes the most widely known and feared as the ‘One-Eyed Grim Reaper’. Yu’s ability allows him to steal someone else’s ability away from them. He is able to collect the ability of anyone he looks into the eyes of and then use it for himself; the original user of the ability loses the power.
Yu was able to take thousands of abilities, ranging from teleportation to slowing the time of moving objects. He is possibly the only human to have ever possessed such a calibre of abilities, definitely the most abilities out of anyone else on this list. However, there is a downfall to using his ability and that is, with every new ability he gains, a part of his memories becomes erased. Before he lost all of his memories, Yu became a compassionate human being, wanting to save everyone by purging all of the abilities, so no one would get hurt over them, he sacrificed himself knowing the consequences is what makes him a great character that should be included on this list, that and also because he literally has all the superhuman abilities in the world.
3. Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Oct. 2006 - Jul. 2007
Nearing the top of the list we have none other than Lelouch Lamperouge, a former prince of Britannia who was given a special ability by a witch named CC. The power given to him is known as ‘Geass’, an ability that manifests differently in every person; like a form of wish, it can grant whatever power one desires. The Geass that Lelouch receives, grants him ‘the power of absolute obedience’. He is able to implement commands to anyone upon eye contact and it cannot be resisted or reversed once the power is used, like a sort of extreme hypnosis. Geass can only be used once per person. This ability is rather dangerous, as many people can be manipulated into thinking what they do is what they believe in, after the command is implanted into their mind.
With more use, the ability becomes stronger and over time, Lelouch becomes able to implant more detailed commands. It doesn’t have a time limit but can be unstable due to the users mental state. Lelouch uses this power in order to bring an end to the conflicts. He is willing to do evil things in order to take down a greater evil in the process, that evil is the Britannia Empire. Lelouch is incredibly smart and tactical, and he is seen as quite cold and ruthless, but actually he is quite compassionate to his family; and above all, his ability is way overpowered.
2. Misaka Mikoto from Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (A Certain Scientific Railgun)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct. 2009 - Mar. 2010
Our runner-up for this list is the human railgun, Misaka Mikoto, another character from the To Aru Majutsu no Index universe. She is the 3rd ranked Level 5 Esper in Academy City and is known as Tokiwadai’s Ace. Her main ability is known as the ‘Railgun’, which is what her nickname is. Misaka is able to propel metal objects at three times the speed of sound by using parallel currents that is formed through her arm. Her choice of projectiles are arcade coins that have a limited range of about 50 meters.
Misaka is able to manipulate electricity to her advantage depending on the situation. She is able to use electromagnetism to attract and repel metals, allowing her to walk on metal walls and ceilings. She is able to interfere with radar-based weapons and technology, and can also magnetize metal weapons so that iron objects will attach to them. She is able to use her powers to hack into electronic systems and security measures and can use a whole range of different lightning-based attacks.
Misaka is immature at times and also has a selfish side, however, she has a strong sense of justice and is very talented but not arrogant. She is friendly and easy-going, but at the same time incredibly gifted with her abilities.
1. Saitama from One Punch Man
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2015 - Dec. 2015
At the top of this list is the most powerful hero ever known, Saitama, otherwise known as the 'One Punch Man'. He was once just an average man, but everything changed when he undertook intense 'hero training', which resulted in the loss of his hair. No one knows exactly what Saitama actually did in order to gain such power in what seems like a relatively short time. However, being the strongest hero alive has its disadvantages, namely that being the most powerful is rather boring, especially when most of his fights end with just one punch.
Saitama’s ability is that his body and capability is far beyond human limits, he has immense strength, speed and reflexes. There is no apparent limit to his strength; his punch can make his enemies explode on impact. He is so fast, that he leaves afterimages of himself when running at high speed, and he is able to leap tremendous heights and far distances. There is no apparent limit to his stamina, as he never has to exert himself when fighting. Saitama has supernatural senses and is invulnerable to extremely powerful blows. He has immunity to many things, such as heat, lack of oxygen and psychic abilities. To sum it up, he is the ultimate unstoppable human with extraordinary abilities that cannot be explained. His sense of justice, humble attitude and chill manner, along with his insane powers is why we think Saitama is the top character with superhuman abilities.
