OP or overpowered is the commonly used term when something is able to completely overpower everything around them. Some characters might have trained in the mountains for 10 years to develop their innate abilities in order to conquer the world and raise their standings. Yet it doesn’t really matter that much to these overpowered characters because they can just curb stomp these guys.

But it’s all good. Because overpowered characters are super fun to watch and have become a trope of the anime industry as a whole. Don’t believe us? We’re doing a Top 10 OP Characters of 2016 article. That’s just one year by itself! Still don’t believe us? Well, follow along as we bring you the Top 10 OP Character of 2016!

10. Mumei (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apri 2016 - July 2016

In a world where everything has been overrun by glowy heart zombies that can destroy settlements in seconds and infect more people to propagate, humans have taken up refuge in train stations. These last remnants of humanity are the only thing that can withstand the onslaught of the Kabane. Normal people can barely kill them because the Kabane can only be killed by destroying their hearts, which are coincidentally made of iron.

But there is one girl who was infected by the Kabane and lived! Mumei has become a Kabaneri, one who was infected but is able to use that infection to boost her abilities to superhuman levels. She has superhuman agility, giving her the ability to nimbly go from roof to roof or navigate her way through a horde of Kabane. Mumei is so strong that she can fight Kabane in hand to hand combat.
And yet, Mumei is the weakest one on this list.

9. Kennosuke Tokisada Ouma (Kuromukuro)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2016- September 2016

Kennosuke is a samurai from another time. He was kept in cryostasis and awakens in the future by the touch of Yukina Shirahane. The moment he awakens, despite being weakened from his long slumber, Kennosuke is able to destroy the foot soldiers of the invading force with a katana. He destroys them with just a katana and no other robots. Normal ground troopers with mechas and modern day fire arms can’t even dent these things!

And when Kennosuke gets into his super mecha, the Kuromukuro, he is able to completely destroy the mechas of the technologically advanced and superior enemy mechas by himself. This always happens without fail even if it goes from one on one to many on one. Furthermore, Kennosuke’s mecha seems to be subject to further upgrades, further distancing the gap between him and everyone else!

8. Rokuro Enmado (Sousei no Onmyouji)

  • Episodes: 50
  • Aired: April 2016 - ???

Rokuro Enmado is the main character of Sousei no Onmyouji. He’s shown to be a complete failure at normal people skills like soccer or academics. However, when it comes to being an exorcist, Rokuro rocks hard! Despite not training for several years after a tragedy forced him to kill his friends, Rokuro is still able to fight on par or overpower many of the bad guys in the series.

Furthermore, Rokuro has a power that is quite similar to Mumei, in which his arm has been corrupted granting him great power. With his corrupted arm, Rokuro is able to punch everything to death easily and can even exorcise Impurities with a single hit. Also, as one of the Twin Star Exorcists, he is able to multiply his powers alongside Benio Adashino using Resonance. Nobody can stand in his way, especially when he works together with her!

7. Sorey (Tales of Zestiria X)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 - September 2016

Sorey is your typical plucky young child living in a village of spirits and not knowing it at all. He eventually sets out to the world outside of the village and comes across a sword in the stone. By some whacky hijinks and coincidence, Sorey draws the sword in the stone and becomes the chosen one, a Shephard that will guide the Tenzoku into harmony with the world.
So…he’s King Arthur?

Alongside the usual curb stomping powers that chosen ones get, Sorey is also able to fuse with the Tenzoku into a Kamui, essentially giving him the ability to completely wreck anything around him by using the powers of two people as one. Sure, he loses sometimes during the story, but we all know those are just literary devices to give the hero a goal that he has to overcome in the future. And Sorey wins in the end anyway.

6. Dazai Osamu (Bungou Stray Dogs)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 - July 2016

Like all characters in the series, Dazai Osamu shares a name with the famous Japanese author Dazai Osamu. Likewise, Dazai’s ability is based on a novel that was written by that same author, No Longer Human. In a world where everyone who is a combatant has some ability that gives them power, Dazai can instantly nullify all their advantages by touching them and sealing that ability away.

Coupled with his extreme martial arts skills and cunning that he developed during his stint as a high ranked Mafioso, Dazai can basically hospitalise anyone that becomes over reliant on their ability. Outside of the anime, Dazai ccan possibly even nullify the powers of other characters, like maybe taking away all of Sorey’s spirit powers and turning him into the scrub he was before. That just makes him all the scarier.

5. Hinata Hajime (Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen - Mirai-hen)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 - September 2016

Hinata Hajime first appears in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the game, but returns in Danganronpa 3 the anime series. In Danganronpa 3, his origins is explained alongside the Remnants of Despair. At first, Hinata was a man with no super talent. Unlike the others who were Ultimate Gamers or Ultimate Breeders, he had nothing to his name.

To remedy this, Hinata volunteered for an experiment that completely rewired his brain, giving birth to a man who is the Ultimate amongst Ultimates. If there exists a talent for it, Hinata has it. Even Ultimate Luck. This drove him insane for a time, causing him to fall into despair, but when Hinata is eventually rehabilitated, he is able to give hope to the remnants of despair, becoming the Ultimate Hope. This is a man that was engineered to have the talents of all humanity. How can he not be overpowered?

4. Hardgore Alice (Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2016 - December 2016

Hardgore Alice is one of the main protagonists of Magical Girl Raising Project and she has an ability like most Magical Girls usually do. Yet her ability is completely overpowered. Hardgore Alice’s main power is regeneration. She can regenerate from anything. You could slice off her head and she would still recover. Poison doesn’t work as she can just regenerate those tissues.

The most deadly power Hardgore Alice possesses is the intelligence to fully utilise her regeneration. Rather than going fully gung-ho with her powers, Hardgore Alice remains cautious and aware that it is possible for her to die if the enemy is meticulous enough to fully evaporate all the molecules of her body. You know what’s harder to kill than the Magical Girl version of Wolverine? A Magical Girl who is actively avoiding your attacks!

3. Koro-sensei (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu)

  • Episodes: 22
  • Aired: January 2015 - June 2015

The main plot of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu is for the students of Class E to assassinate their teacher before the expiry date of one year. If you were a student of that very class you might think to yourself, “What! How? Do they want me to commit murder?” That is because Koro-sensei is a godlike science experiment that is able to move at the speed of Mach 20 (twenty times the speed of sound), regenerate super-fast, use super human senses, and much more!

On top of his superpowers, Koro-sensei was once known as the God of Death. The God of Death was the number one assassin in the world, possessing countless skills to aid him like music, science, and many more. When you put the number one killer together with superpowers, what force can possibly go up against this impossible existence?

2. Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 - September 2016

Well, you knew this was gonna be here somewhere. Shigeo Kageyama, more commonly known as Mob, is the esper version of Saitama from One Punch Man. Like Saitama, Mob can basically plow through anyone in the series with little difficulty. The more emotional he gets, the more able he is to use his powers in a completely overpowered fashion. And that scale goes all the way to a hundred.

Some of the feats that Mob was capable of include: Sucking a school up into a psychic tornado then putting it all back together, flinging someone around a room hundreds of times in a minute, or even empowering someone to defeat multiple espers at once. Truly, Psycho Mob 100 deserves to be on the same pedestal as One Punch Man because they both have the same kind of protagonists.

1. Toshinori Yagi (Boku no Hero Academia)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2016 - June 2016

Toshinori Yagi, more commonly known as All Might, is known to be the most powerful hero of all time. He possesses the quirk One for All, and is able utilize superman levels of abilities when it comes to fighting. All Might has been seen defeating huge monsters with a single hit and taking blows that should be fatal to normal people.

Even after receiving a crippling blow, All Might still had the power to keep going despite his suffering. By using One for All, he was able to utilize the power stockpiled by his previous generations and eventually managed to defeat the user of All for One utilizing the extent of his power. Though this caused him to lose most of his power, All Might still remains able to use quick bursts of it.

This is one old dog that won’t stay dead!

Final Thoughts

While the overpowered characters in this list are ranked from 1 to 10, it is not strictly true that their ability to defeat each other would remain that way. For example, it’s possible that Osamu Dazai would be able to nullify All Might’s powers if he was sneaky enough and take him down conventionally.

When everyone becomes overpowered, it becomes something of a game of Jan-Ken-Pon, but of course, within their own stories, they remain the unparalleled kings of being overpowered. So all the bad guys better watch out, because they are about to get rekted! Know any other overpowered characters of 2016? Share them with us in the comments below!
