Perhaps you have already read through our previous article on danderes and our last article for top 10 dandere characters [link at the bottom]. This is an updated list with new characters to satisfy your crave for dandere characters. But first, a quick refresher! So everyone probably already knows the famous tsundere. What defines a dandere? Over the years, the character of a dandere has developed. Usually they have similar traits to their kuudere counterpart but generally, dandere comes from the word danmari - to be silent and reserved.
Perhaps the defining factor could be that danderes are quiet as they are shy unlike their kuudere counterpart, where silence is a sign of being cool. The underlying trait may after all be shyness! But that does not define all danderes as generally, they just don't talk much and are simply taciturn. So join us today as we update our best dandere characters today! Maybe you are disappointed that your favourite did not end up in the previous list, or maybe you might even find a character that you've overlooked if you like dandere characters! So here goes~
10. Nadeko Sengoku (Bakemonogatari)
- Episodes: 15
- Aired: Jul 3, 2009 to Jun 25, 2010
Nadeko is a young girl and the friend of Araragi's sister. After not meeting him for so long, she still remembers him. Nadeko was introduced as a shy and quiet girl who was easily amused. She has quite a soft and fragile voice while speaking. Eventually, she develops a crush on Araragi and starts calling him Koyomi-oniichan. This crush continues on even after Senjougahara and Koyomi got together.
Nadeko holds the shy and quiet traits of the dandere. A sub-characteristic of a dandere character is usually the soft voice that has which complements their shyness. Nadeko's shyness is exemplified by her soft voice and her tendency to hold her hands together. Apart from her body language, Nadeko spoke very little. Along the way, Nadeko starts to talk more with Araragi while her dere dere moments play out in her head.
9. Umi Sonoda (Love Live!)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Jan 2013 to Mar 2013
Umi is one of the founders of the Muse. She has a strong head on her shoulders and is usually the most reasonable one and pragmatic amongst her other group members. Despite having the qualities of leadership, this role was passed on instead to Honoka. In contrast however, Umi is actually very shy in front of others and hated the idea of wearing short skirts. When teased, Umi also gets very flustered.
The Love Live! series ended just a few months ago and as such, we would like to mention a great Love Live! character. Unlike the other flamboyant, dazzling and confident members, Umi possesses dandere traits. She enjoys reading as shown by the fact that she is the group's main lyricist. Apart from that, Umi’s traditional upbringing is the reason for her excelling in many solitary Japanese arts such as archery and traditional dance. Umi also has difficulties expressing herself when asked about the group's well being as well. Amongst the 9 member of Muse, Umi is the veritable dandere of the group.
8. Urara Shiraishi (Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo/Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr 2015 to Jun 2015
Shiraishi was seen to be an aloof student. Her results are exceptional and she is well-liked by all the teachers. Many often think that she is just cold as she does not talk much to her other classmates and also by the fact that she is beautiful and has high grades. However, the truth is that her first group of friends had simply used her intelligence and did not care much for her. This made her jaded with making friends and she refused to continue her studies. This was changed when she and Yamada had that fateful kiss...
Urara represents the dandere character that does not fall into the kuudere category. She may not be shy, like most danderes. Further, her silence is not to make her character cool, it just represents her reticent nature due to a bad past. While surrounded with the people she can genuinely call her friends, her personality changes and she will actually hold a proper conversation with them and show her caring side. This is even more so with Yamada as both of them had a developing relationship.
7. Shiori Shinomiya (The World God Only Knows)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct 2010 to Dec 2010
Shiori is one of the capture targets of the anime. She has trouble speaking and keeps most of her thoughts to herself. Due to the fact that she has no friends, she is extremely fond of books and escapes into the different worlds that they provide. Shiori’s usual hangout is the library because well - that's where all the books are. At first, she was even shown to have trouble holding a simply conversation as she was too shy to speak.
Amongst all of the targets in the series, Shiori is a unique individual. As Keima needs to talk to the heroines in order to make them love him, how can he succeed with Shiori if they can't even communicate? As such, the plan was to be in the library constantly and start on common topics. Due to her lack of acquaintances, Shiori was quite intrigued by Keima and slowly started to open up to him. It was there we find out that Shiori had longed to be able to express herself but her shyness and over-conscious head prevents her from doing so. Shiori is a true dandere not only to the series, but to the characterisation as well.
6. Ichinose Kotomi (Clannad)
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: Oct 2007 to Mar 2008
Kotomi is a child genius. She often hangs out in the library alone until Tomoya came along. An awkward individual, she has problems getting along with everybody as she is shy and does not possess general people skills (we think it's due to all that time she spent with books). Kotomi worries about getting bullied by others. Luckily for her, Kotomi managed to find a group of people in the Drama Club whom all eventually became close friends with her.
Kotomi is the overlooked dandere character of Clannad. A little bit shy, a little bit awkward, and a little bit antisocial - Kotomi's character has just about a little bit of every dandere traits mixed into her. Her reclusive nature over the years hindered her ability to communicate with people and she needs assistance from Tomoya. Slowly but surely, Kotomi became good friends with everyone that was introduced to her
5. Roromiya Karuta (Inu x Boku SS)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2012 to Mar 2012
Appearing as a quiet and emotionless girl, Karuta usually doesn’t speak much. It is only to those that she cares about. Karuta deeply enjoys food and can never be seen without something to munch on. Her childhood friend is Watanuki who has a huge crush on her. Although Karuta often seems to be very distance, she does return his feelings which often caused him to blush. Her ending segment also suggests her potential feelings for Watanuki as well if you read the lyrics.
Haruta’'s dere side has never been explored much. Since her only obsession is food and her lack of communicating with others only masks her true feelings for others. Only at small segments in the anime where Karuta genuinely professed her feelings for others, then are we aware of her feelings. Her dandere side is actually quite well-established since most of the time, she really does not talk at all... Again, it's not for the sake of being cool, it's just that Karuta prefers to keep herself busy with the things that she likes - food and protecting Watanuki. D'awwww...
4. Onodera Kosaki (Nisekoi)
- Episodes: 20
- Aired: Jan 11, 2014 to May 24, 2014
One of the promised girls to Raku Ichijou, Kosaki seems to be a close childhood friend along with Chitoge Kirisaki. Now, as a high school student, Kosaki is the epitome of the traditional Japanese woman. Polite, gracious and soft-spoken, she is also extremely shy and becomes easily embarrassed in front of Raku. Kosaki is innocent and lacks self-confidence, as well, needing the support of her friends to push her and Raku together. Though Kosaki’s feelings never reach him, she is content with just being beside him and talking to him.
The tsundere character obviously belongs with Chitoge. In contrast to her, Kosaki is less direct with her approach - actually... what approach??? Most of the time she is too timid to make her advances! It was so bad that Kosaki didn't even dare to give her handmade chocolate to Raku for Valentine's Day. Her feelings are often suppressed because she lacks the courage to express them out, hence giving the impression that she does not talk a lot. Even though it is her personal mission to get Raku to notice her, she usually backs off in the end due to her embarrassment and bashfulness.
3. Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: Oct 2002 to Feb 2007
Hinata has long since had a crush on Naruto for as long as Team 7 was undergoing training. In less tense situations such as episodes of Naruto's daily routine, you will often see her in the background stalking him. The reason for Hinata’s affection is because Naruto had always been the figure of support for her. To Hinata, to see someone surviving in a harsher reality but yet maintaining that positive attitude is the fuel for her own courage and self-esteem. Naruto literally forms a part of her and to that, she will willingly follow him to the ends of the world if needed.
Do you realize, that however long that Naruto has aired, Hinata has been chasing him since the start? That itself is something! While it may be creepy, let's give Hinata the benefit of the doubt. It takes an incredible amount of effort for her to keep up her routine. This only shows the extent of her love for Naruto. The only problem, her shyness and her soft spoken nature in general. Of course, she's dandere! Hinata has tried countless of times to talk to Naruto but often gets too alarmed by her own actions to continue further.
2. Yuki Nagato (Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu)
- Episodes: 16
- Aired: Apr 2015 to Jul 2015
Her true identity is that of a humanoid robot. It was never clear if she possesses emotions but one thing that is clear is her limited social skills. In this spin off series, although her personality is different, she still has dandere traits. The current Yuki is a klutz in nature, gets flustered easily by constant teasing and stumbling whenever she sees her crush - Kyon. No doubt she has her friends support, the battle for Kyon's heart is still a tough one!
In this alternate universe, Yuki still has traits of danderism. Not all danderes are reclusive as shown in this spin off. The Yuki now is leaning more towards the shy being a klutz part of being a dandere. She still rarely speaks of course - but only to Kyon as her dandere self is more focused on him. When others make fun of her relationship with Kyon, it becomes apparent that she becomes highly distressed and unsettled.
1. Shiina Mashiro (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct 9, 2012 to Mar 26, 2013
Her artistic skills are amongst the highest of the standards. She is a genius when it comes to art. If only the same can be said for just about everything else... Mashiro is entirely dependent on another person's care as her eccentricity caused her to fail in performing daily routines. She is mostly aloof and has her heads high above the clouds as though as she is living in another world. Communicating with other people is also an issue for her as Mashiro does not understand the conformity to social norms and acts unconventionally.
Mashiro is the last of the different kinds of danderes out there. She is the embodiment of the word danmari - to be reclusive and taciturn. She speaks little, not for the sake of being cool or tsun - but because she is just... well... eccentric and weird. Her dere side is developed after she realise the care and concern that Sorata has for her. Hence, this modern character possesses the original traits of a dandere - the quiet character who eventually develops a dere side. That is why she ranks at the top of our list.
Conclusion
And this ends our updated dandere list. We will constantly bring you alternative characters since the anime world is ever changing and expansive. If you're disappointed that your favourite dandere character is not in this list, please do comment and share your love for them! Whether they come from an obscure anime or not, we are interested in finding danderes from all aspects! So share with us today and who knows, we might even have them next!
To start off, let’s refresh on the meaning and qualifications for what makes an anime character become “Dandere”. This term is from the “dere” family of characteristics that include Yandere,Kuudere or the most famous Tsundere; fan-made words that we use to categorize character stereotypes. “Dan” originates from a Japanese word meaning to be quiet or person of few words. Usually these characters become nervous and distant when approached due to shyness.
Dandere characters are popular but many times they fall into secondary or supporting roles in anime but this isn’t a rule. Frequently but not exclusively danderes are female characters that in some way connect to the main character and we slowly get to see how they evolve throughout the series and become more open to the main circle of characters as well as to us, the viewers.
If you have a soft spot for these dandere characters then it’s time, Senpai, to notice these top 10 danderes!
10. Hikiotani, Ito from Punch Line
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 10, 2015 – June 26, 2015
Ito is part of the main characters in the anime Punch Line. Her family name is Hikiotani which is meant to be a joke. If we take this family name apart we end up with her basic characteristics; hikikomori, otaku and ni (from the sound for the word NEET). Even though her housemates always end up looking for her in her room, she prefers not to go out or relate much with other people.
Once we discover the pet she's hiding in her room, we get to see how she is more of a sweet but shy person. Even if she is not meant to be the center of the problem, later on she wins the spotlight of the series.
This dandere is a gamer girl that slowly shows her affection towards the protagonist of the anime Iridatsu, Yuuta. She opens up only to Yuuta and her bear cub, Muhi. She often shows a cold or distant side but she seems to enjoy being around the people that live in her same apartment complex. The best thing of her being in this anime is that we get a ton of fan service where she STILL ends up with a shy touch.
9. Mizuno, Ami from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal / Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: July 5, 2014 - July 18, 2015
Ami, more commonly known as Sailor Mercury, is always the same in any version of the Sailor Moon Saga. Shy bookworm that looks up to Usagi because they are total opposites. In this commemoration of Sailor Moon’s 20th Anniversary Special, we get to see Ami once again but with a new art style based off the original manga as well as her new transformation in computer graphics! Like the original version, Sailor Mercury gets plenty of screen time and background story during the first few episodes of Sailor Moon.
Ami is part of an old classic anime, making her a veteran dandere. As part of the very first danderes and member of a long running series, she is the dandere character with the most background story. When she transforms into Sailor Mercury she becomes a strategic and confident fighter most of the times, but she doesn't mix work with her personal life.
Ami is more of a nerdy, quiet type girl that became open only to her close little circle of sailor friends. She likes to read more than hanging out with people though, so she hides away quietly in a library or cram school on her days off.
8. Tsurumi, Chiriko from AnoHana / The Flower We Saw that Day
- Episodes: 11
- Aired: April 15, 2011 – June 24, 2011
As a small girl, Tsurumi was adorable and shy. She always quietly stayed around her group of friends called Super Peace Busters (SPB). After her childhood friend Menma passed away, she drifted apart from the group with Matsuyuki, another SPB member. She grows up to be very emotionless, cold, and a bit rude. She goes to a prestigious college and is one of the elite members of her class.
This high class attitude makes her cocky enough to actually talk down to her best friends. Thanks to her bottled-up depression she has after Menma's death, this girl makes you think she is a Kuudere until the very end. Towards the end of the series, she shows her true colors, totally changing our perception of her.
This dandere lets her shyness slowly turn insecurities into a shield that pushes people away, even her own self. Later on, Tsurumi becomes the slave of the SPB sinking boat of friendship when she drops the facade of the Kuudere character archetype. She confesses all her feelings after many years of hiding away in fear of not being important enough for anyone.
7. Nakahara, Sunako from Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge / The Wallflower
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 4, 2006 – March 28, 2007
This anime’s main character is named Sunako, and she enjoys being alone. She lost hope for a bright future when she was rejected by the person she once had a crush on. Locked in her room, she only talks to her imaginary friends; sealing the outside world. One of her favorite hobbies is enjoying her solitude in a dark corner while watching gory, bloody, horror movies with her anatomy model toy-friend… whaat?
Sunako is super creepy and she loves being that way. She is, however, forced to live with 4 extremely handsome men who are just obligating her to become a beautiful princess-like girl just to have free rent.
Dandere are not always silent and cute. This Dandere is shy, quiet and... creepy as hell. Sunako never wanted to come out of her shell like other danderes wished to do; she loved being quiet and scary. Forced by a bunch of guys to become what she doesn't want to be, she could get a little aggressive, but not in a ruthless way. Sunako is locked down in her own little world of sadism dandere.
6. Kurashita, Tsukimi from Kuragehime / Princess Jellyfish
- Episodes: 11
- Aired: October 15, 2010 – December 31, 2010
Aspiring fashion designer, Tsukimi Kurashita is our main character in Princess Jellyfish. While she may not have a princess look, her obsession for jellyfish is what drives this anime’s name to be. Her mother promised to make her a beautiful wedding dress when she became old enough to marry, but Tsukimi’s mom passed away too soon, therefore, making our character’s dream of getting that puffy white dress only a memory.
Tsukimi didn’t stop here though, she came to Shibuya in hopes of becoming a jellyfish-inspired fashion designer and also to fulfill her late mom’s dream. But, she has begun to lose hope in ever getting married anyway, because she grew up to be an ugly nerdy girl.
Even if she is very talkative, Tsukimi made it to this dandere list because she’s the closest to what a real life dandere person would look and be like. A regular looking girl that thinks she looks like a monster, therefore, losing all of her confidence and only gaining her low self esteem. She is often viewed as super creepy by other people because of the way she reacts and her strange, extreme obsession with jellyfish. She is extremely shy towards beautiful people, especially boys.
5. Kubota, Hina from Barakamon
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 6, 2014 – September 28, 2014
Hina is a young country girl that has a supporting role in the anime, Barakamon. She is introduced by the main character, Naru, as her best friend. When we first see Hina, it’s easy to see how extremely shy she is because she gets nervous only when being talked to. She is afraid of Seishuu, the protagonist. Hina is afraid of every new thing she sees, she gets so nervous around new things that she cries… a lot! In the end, like every child, she plays as a troublemaker with Naru.
The youngest in this list, this dandere is only a 7 year old child. She’s a nervous wreck and this is the funniest thing of her. Hina cries not out of sadness, but because she panics out of shyness. She seems to cry even louder when she’s happy, though! Other than her trait of crying over everything, she’s more calm and well mannered than most of the young people on the island where Seishuu lives. When she gets comfortable around people she’s more open and gentle to them; this being the case with Seishuu, too.
4. Andou, Natsu from 30-Sai no Hoken Taiiku
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 7, 2011 - June 23, 2011
We meet Natsu through Hayao, the main male character of Sanjuu Sai no Hoken Taiiku. At first, Natsu is just the main character’s crush, but later on develops as a main character herself. Natsu is a 30 year old librarian that is so shy she has her own protection shield called A. K. field. Using this super power shield she keeps men away from her, but not because she wants to, but just because she is too shy! Thus being the main reason why she is still a virgin! She is assisted by female sex gods who keep trying to train her on how to finally get it on.
Natsu is in this list for obvious reasons: she completely meets all the requirements for a dandere character. She is shy and pushes away the man she likes because of this. Natsu is probably one of the oldest in age of the danderes but she is desperately wanting to get rid of this position. In order to do this she accepts the help of two female tsundere sex gods! Imagine how this plays out for her at the end! She surely puts on a fight, but this is an anime you definitely have to watch to see if this dandere girl pops her bubble and her cherry at the same time.
3. Sakurai, Izumi from Nichijou / My Ordinary Life
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: April 3, 2011 – September 25, 2011
Ms. Sakurai is in the anime, Nichijou. She has a simple dream of becoming a good role-model teacher. She often tries to beat her shyness and speak her mind but always seems to pick the worst combination of words. She always tries to remind her students about school rules and demands them to be followed, but never seems to work so she ends up apologizing to everyone instead!
Sakurai is a dandere character who tries to play a strict teacher, even when she is mad she sounds so shy! We see her true self mostly when commenting in her head. She gets little screen time because shes a supporting character in the anime, but this is why you’re always in hopes for her to show up. She is insecure about herself but little by little she tries her best.
2. Hyuuga, Hinata from Naruto: Shippuden
- Episodes: 421 (until July 30, 2015)
- Aired: February 15, 2007 – Ongoing
Everyone loves Hinata. She's well known for her cute, shy crush over Naruto ever since being introduced into the series. Hinata gets her fair share of screen time in Naruto: Shippuden, so we get the chance to see how deeply she can go into the dandere mode. Her lack of confidence makes her shy with everyone, especially with Naruto, of course. She is timid and obvious with her feelings. Somehow Naruto is so blind he never notices her blushing. We see how she grows more open in this second season, but still hanging to the serene and kind image.
Hinata is a very nervous dandere, her shyness is exploited to the max and is used as a comic relief. This doesn't mean she stops being a super cute or a kick ass fighter.
1. Kuronuma, Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke / From Me To You
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 7, 2009 – March 31, 2010
Everyone fears Sawako because she looks like Sadako, from the famous horror movie. In fact, she is too dense to even notice this. Sawako is the shyest and purest girl you will ever find.
Sawako is possibly the queen of the danderes. She is honest, sweet and sees the good in everyone. Her nervous reactions only get cuter each episode and surely she will steal your heart. Most of the time, we hear Sawako’s thoughts because she over-analyzes everything and is too shy to say things out loud. She values her friends, her parents, and never wants others to be troubled. But overall, she is in complete “awe” with Kazehaya, her high school sweetheart. Typically, she cannot confess her love because she doesn't even realize the feeling herself.
She is polite and gentle to everyone she meets; caring and kind to her few friends. She has a habit of losing herself in thought and forgets to be normal when it happens. This comes off as creepy to everyone.
Thanks to this list of Top 10 Dandere Characters in Anime, we can see that there is more to these types of characters than just simple shyness. Dandere characters are in a vast genre of anime like drama, action or romance. Their character archetype does not restrain them from being in any anime. As you know, dandere can be main, secondary or supportive characters in anime. Regardless of how shy or distant they may appear to be.
Is there a character you would like to add to the list? There’s so many wonderful danderes still out there hiding! Let us know in the comments below!
