Top 10 Strongest Anime Characters of the Last 10 Years

Anime has some of the strongest characters in any medium, ranging from martial artists and traditional warriors to fantasy characters in isekai anime and magical girls. This article will go through the ten we think best qualify as the strongest characters in anime in recent years. It is tough to narrow down which deities or superheroes in anime deserve to be on this list as there is an endless amount of anime and franchises to dive into. Favourite franchises will be visited but hopefully, there are some series you have not seen yet and want to check out after hearing a bit about their characters. There will be plenty of room for debate over this topic in the comments, so please let us know your opinions, but let’s get started!

Spoilers Ahead!

10. Eren Yeager from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

Eren Yeager, the lead character from Attack on Titan, is a very strong first pick. Not only can he fight with the best of them, giving the Recon Corps lead Levi Ackerman a fair fight, he can also shapeshift into an over 15 metres tall Titan that can regenerate his injuries. The key to Eren’s addition to this list is his ability to command waves of Titans with the power of the Founding Titan.

Being able to regenerate himself, fight against anyone that opposes him, and take on entire countries with his abilities, Eren Yeager is a very strong anime character putting him at number ten on our list. However, despite his powers giving Eren the ability to level entire cities with his Titan strength, Eren is bottom of this list as everyone below can do so much more.

9. Koro-sensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom)

A teacher must be pretty powerful for his sole purpose to be instructing their class on how to kill him. If this were not his purpose, Koro-sensei would have definitely been a powerful deity in his own right. Instead, the big yellow squid man can fly at unbelievable speeds to avoid gunfire, outfly a fighter jet, and can escape almost anything.

Even in terms of attacking power, Koro-sensei begins the anime by damaging the moon into a permanent crescent shape. The Moon! Koro-sensei ends up taking the entire world hostage with his incredible powers, not releasing people unless his prolific students can kill him by the end of the year. Koro-sensei’s overconfidence in his teaching abilities illustrates the yellow squid man’s extraordinary intellect, earning him a spot on this list of strongest anime characters.

8. Meruem from Hunter x Hunter (2011)

There exists a trope in anime of ‘the most perfect life form’, and although it is often overplayed for characters that don’t live up to expectations, I think we can all agree that Meruem has been the most believable in recent anime. Meruem came into the world with incredible strength, being able to kill anything in his vicinity. This is thanks to being a combination of the world’s animals and humans that can use Nen, making Meruem a Chimera Ant that surpasses most creatures’ physical abilities.

On top of Meruem’s insane physical strength and abilities, he possesses an incredible intellect that surpasses almost every human, making it tough to defeat him without thinking five or six steps ahead, despite not mastering Nen, the Hunter x Hunter world’s magic augmentation system, Meruem can give any character a tough fight.

7. Akira Fudo from Devilman: Crybaby

Despite beginning the series as a weakling that struggles to run away from people, Akira Fudo becomes extremely overpowered throughout the series, taking out groups of enemies with his claws and speed, eventually fighting for the fate of the world against demons with attacks that can wipe out entire civilisations. True to the original Devilman series, Masaaki Yuasa’s adaptation for Netflix has kept Fudo exceptionally strong.

The abilities that Akira develops throughout the series turn him into a true devil who can fight against any form of demon, exhibiting super strength and speed in his human form, and the ability to control fire and see through anything in his devil form.

6. Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100

A typical high school boy that has psychic powers is not a new concept in anime, but where Mob Psycho 100 differs is the manga writer’s tendency to write especially strong characters. Shigeo Kageyama, referred to as Mob, is no different in this case. Starting off the series showing his ability to see spirits and interact with even the most powerful when necessary, Mob develops his skills based on a rating of 100.

Mob exhibits very little of his skills in everyday life but, under great stress, seeing that number go from 1 to 100 illustrates the latent strength within him. From exorcising a small yokai that inhabits an object to being able to completely tear apart the planet, any enemies around him, and even the fabric of existence itself. Not the kind of guy you want to get on the wrong side of in a fight.

5. Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen

The newest series to feature a character on this list, Jujutsu Kaisen, has a slew of overpowered characters that fight using spirit style techniques and traditional martial arts. Most notable from this new series’ overpowered selection is Satoru Gojo with his power ‘Limitless’, which appears to grant him unlimited power in the reality surrounding him, allowing for objects to be created or destroyed at his will.

Despite this series only having started with many more movies and series to come on their way, Satoru Gojo has demonstrated enough power already to be considered one of the strongest characters in anime. It also gives him an edge that his eyes are amazing.

4. Meliodas from Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

When a character has the backstory of being the son of a Demon King and the Dragon’s Sin of Wrath, it’s hard not to imagine they would be a strong anime character. This is the case for Meliodas from The Seven Deadly Sins, the leader of the seven characters that embody the worlds deadliest sins. Meliodas’ character develops throughout the series, demonstrating his great power with every enemy the world faces, even leading the Ten Commandments with his incredible abilities to deflect any kind of magic.

On top of his incredible supernatural abilities and magic, Meliodas is a skilled fighter with his sword and possesses the unnatural characteristic of being immortal. Despite having lived for a long time already at the start of the anime, Meliodas demonstrates his strength time and time again, gaining him a spot in the top five of this list.

3. Rimuru Tempest from Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

Moving towards a different style of anime, we have a character representing the Isekai genre which hosts a slew of overpowered characters. With the rise of Isekai since the release of Sword Art Online, overpowered main characters have become the mainstay, and Rimuru Tempest is the best example of this so far.

A slime is not the first creature that comes to mind when you think of solid anime characters, but Rimuru takes this to a new level to absorb the powers of anything he ingests into his slime. That gives him the ability to take on the powers of any strong foe he faces, giving Rimuru insane magic abilities and taking on the forms of strong godlike characters.

2. Zeno from Dragon Ball Super

Yes, we are all disappointed that Goku couldn’t make this list, but it is tough to overlook Zeno, aka Grand Zeno or Future Zeno. Being the king of all the Multiverse means you have to pack a pretty powerful punch when the likes of Beerus, Whis, and Goku exist. That being said, it could only be a matter of time before Goku, and his super Saiyan iterations come up against the Grand Zeno to reclaim the title of the strongest character in the Dragon Ball universe.

It is hard to see how this would happen, though, as Zeno possesses the abilities to create and destroy all existence across all the universes in a single blow. Despite not harbouring any fighting abilities or techniques, Zeno is just too powerful to need them.

1. Saitama from One Punch Man

The most anticipated member on this list, the strongest character in all anime, has to be Saitama from One Punch Man. Nothing can stop this guy’s ability to beat anything and everything that comes his way with one punch. Despite not having any magical powers or supernatural reasons to be as strong as he is, there is nothing that Saitama can’t face with his immense strength.

Instead, Saitama has acquired his incredible fighting abilities through a rigorous training regime of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10 kilometre run every day. That’s all you need to become the strongest! (This exercise is not recommended, you will get injured). Saitama is not on a quest to become the strongest in the universe or anything along those lines, instead just trying to find fulfilment in his day to day life.

Final Thoughts

Anime is such a broad medium that it is hard to limit a list like this, especially about the strongest characters, to only ten. Shonen anime has long dominated these sorts of lists, still, with the ascent of Isekai anime and their overpowered characters in fantasy settings, it is only a matter of time before we see a shift in the balance. So what shows do you think have the most overpowered characters? Let us know in the comments!

We understand that many more strong characters could have been included on this list, and we would love to hear your suggestions in the comments; or if you disagree with any of the picks and their placing, do say!
