In the first episode of Hitoribocchi no Marumaru, we learn all about Bocchi and her arrangement with Kai to befriend every member of her class. On her first day of school, Hitori prepares to introduce herself to the class, only for her stutter to her way through her introduction and end up puking. What's great about this scene is that it is a little funny, but it also does a great job at setting up Bocchi's character and showing us just how bad her fear of interacting with others is. The scene is made even better when they do a call back to it during the last episode, allowing Bocchi's vomit-filled introductions to serve as bookends of the series.

With Bocchi having made two friends, she decides it is time to overcome another huge hurdle, inviting friends over. Bocchi decides to invite Nako and Aru to her house, but only Nako is able to make it. When Nako arrives, she is greeted by Bocchi in a bear outfit who tries her absolute hardest to be a good host. This may not be the most meaningful or impactful scene in the series, but it was just too funny to not include on the list. Seeing Bocchi in a ridiculous bear outfit as she continuously fails at everything she tries is cute, funny, and it makes you feel a little bad for her.

Bocchi, Nako, Aru, and Sotoca decide to make the most of their summer as they go to the pool and then decide to go do some karaoke. While at the karaoke parlor, Bocchi runs into Kai and tells her about the progress she has made towards befriends her whole class. Kai runs off after listening to Bocchi and begins to cry because she is happy Bocchi has made some friends and she is glad that Bocchi hasn't come to resent her. This is the first time we get to see Kai and understand how her deal with Bocchi has been affecting her. We see how just how much Kai also has to struggle with not being able to talk to her best friend and how she has had to live with the fear of Bocchi possibly hating her despite her good intentions.

After a day filled with battling her feelings towards Bocchi and wanting to officially be her friend, Sotoka decides she will wait until the time is right. With already going through one emotional event, things get a bit worse for Sotoka when she is walking home with Nako, Aru, and Bocchi and they discuss the fact that Sotoka lives alone. While she says puts on a brave face and says it doesn't bother her, Sotoka can't hide her true feelings about her loneliness. When she gets home, Sotoka is greeted by messages from her three friends welcoming her home. The entirety of episode 8 is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for Sotoka. Seeing the usually upbeat Sotoka feeling down is a bit depressing, but the moment she gets those texts from her friends washes that feeling away as we get one of the most heartwarming moments from the entire series.

With her first year of middle school drawing to a close, Bocchi thinks about how far she has come since the beginning of the year and how much further she has to go. To celebrate her accomplishments, Bocchi decides she wants to walk home with all of her friends. Bocchi is able to convince everyone, except Kako, to walk home together and get pancakes. While Bocchi is enjoying her time with her friends, Kai sees her and leaves a Do-Your-Best Fairy on the window of the restaurant. This is hands down the best scene in Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu. Everything Bocchi had done throughout the series was building up to this moment. Seeing just how far she has come and how much she has grown was the perfect way to end the series.
