As everyone’s favorite costume holiday is soon upon us we’re counting down our picks for cosplay of the school uniform variety in a mini series of articles with this portion covering male uniforms. Our ranking is based on the overall appeal of the design with special consideration given if the source material is related to Halloween, monsters, or spookiness of any sort. Let’s go!
5. Nagatsuki High School Uniform from Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)
We’re kicking off this list with the uniform of Nagatsuki High from KyoAni’s modern dark-fantasy anime series Kyoukai no Kanata, specifically, glasses-lover Akihito Kanbara’s uniform with his trademark yellow argyle sweater. While this uniform’s design isn’t that unusual or notable by itself, the added adornment makes it all the more memorable, plus it’ll help you stay warm on those oft-cold Halloween nights. For added spooky flair, Akihito’s youmu form makes everything more Halloween-appropriate without going over-the-top.
4. First High School Uniform from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School)
Male uniforms in anime aren’t often given as much attention as their female counterparts with many being very plain, simple, and ordinary, but Mahouka Koukou’s are a big exception. With cool, military-style jackets and a striking white and emerald green color scheme all decorated with geometric motifs, it’s one of the most unique uniforms out there. The added detail on the shoulders signifying rank/ability is an extra nice touch. If you’re looking for a more modern (and very anime) wizard costume, this is the one for you!
3. Cross Academy Uniform from Vampire Knight
Alongside witches and ghosts, it doesn’t get much more classic Halloween than vampires and, of course, with anime/manga, a vampire high school was bound to happen at some point. One thing that’s interesting about the uniforms in Vampire Knight is that they have two versions: a white uniform for the Night Class and a black for the Day Class which are basically inverted versions of each other. Both have an interesting, vaguely military style to them that has a classy look accentuated by prominent stripes along the edges. Overall, it’s definitely a cool look and the vampire connection makes it all the more fun on Halloween.
2. Ashford Academy Uniform from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)
While not of the typical spooky Halloween vibe, Code Geass is nevertheless supernatural and easily viewed as a superhero series which has been a big part of seasonal costumes for quite some time now. The male uniform at Ashford Academy is something of a modern, double-breasted variant of the classic Japanese gakuran uniform found throughout anime (think Sakamoto desu ga? or Toradora!). Slick and elegant with regal gold trim and large school insignia around the collar, this uniform is a classy and understated choice for a Halloween costume. If you’re feeling really intense, pair with a Zero transformation cosplay midway through the night!
1. Gekkoukan High School Uniform from Persona 3
Persona 3 is arguably the gloomiest entry in the hugely popular Persona series that spans games, anime, and manga. While the Tartarus might have been a sore spot for many, the uniforms in Persona 3 are universally awesome. With a classic black and white color scheme with red highlights from the school emblem and S.E.E.S. arm band and a refined, modern look with just enough edge to make it vaguely gothic enough for Halloween, the Gekkoukan High School uniform is our top pick that’s further enhanced by its dark source material. For extra edge, feel free to include an Evoker, but obviously use common sense as you would with any other gun-shaped item. Getting together the whole S.E.E.S. crew also makes for a really cool group cosplay!
Well, there you have it, five great school uniform ideas for Halloween. We hope you enjoyed our picks, but if you have some of your own (or would like to share anything else related) please post them below in the comments section! We hope you have a happy Halloween!
Honorable mentions: Duel Academy (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, aww yeah!) and Ouran Academy (Ouran Host Club)
