Top 10 Male Characters to Cosplay for Halloween 2018

It’s Halloween, which means dressing up for your school’s parade or having fun at a party, but no matter what, you need to stand out. Think you’re being funny with a “This Is My Costume” T-shirt? Think again, because even those are popular.

Instead, impress everyone with your cosplay skills and come out in something no one would think about. However, if you’re a newbie at cosplay, we’ve got you covered with a Top 10 Easy Cosplays For Halloween list, so check that out if that’s more your style. With all that said, let’s get started.

10. Ryuk from Death Note

  • Episodes: 37
  • Aired: October 2006 to June 2007

Light Yagami is the smartest student at his school and is talented at pretty much everything, but that doesn’t mean his life is entertaining. One day, a book titled “Death Note” falls from the sky and lands a few feet away from Light. He picks up the book and reads the first page which says, “Whoever’s name is written in here shall die”.

Why settle for a devil when you can be a shinigami? Ryuk cosplays differ from person to person depending on their skill level. You can wear all black leather and paint your face white and add some yellow or red contacts. Too easy? Make a large marionette Ryuk so you can control his wings, and have him eat apples. No matter how you customize this cosplay, you have to make sure you have a Death Note as a prop.

9. Kirito from Sword Art Online

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: July 2012 to December 2012

VR is the main console that people use to play MMORPGs, and everyone is excited for the latest game, Sword Art Online. The game is set in a massive medieval fantasy world so players can’t get enough of it, but the fun quickly ends when the gamers are unable to log out. Their avatars suddenly disappear and their real life selves are shown. The game creator announces that the only way to leave is if you beat all 100 floors, and if they die in the game, they die in real life.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Kirito has a pretty cool coat. Ever since he won it after the first floor boss battle, Kirito strides around Aincrad killing more and more bosses with a single swoop. The coat is dark and mysterious which is pretty much what Halloween is all about. Got a partner? Then the two of you will make a great team as Asuna and Kirito. All you need are swords and you’re good to go!

8. Hiro from Darling in the FranXX

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: January 2018 to July 2018

The parasites are children born and raised to pilot a FranXX and kill the monstrous klaxosaurs. However, you cannot pilot a FranXX alone and this becomes troublesome when Hiro can’t sync up with his partner to fight them. When all hope seems lost, Hiro runs into a fascinating girl with long pink hair and red horns. The girl, Zero Two, has klaxosaur blood and is the only one who can pilot the most powerful FranXX, Strezilia. Hiro wants to be Zero Two’s next partner but no one has ever survived more than three times in Strezilia with her.

The Darling in the FranXX hype is still going strong, so join the party and cosplay as Hiro! Not only does this give you the opportunity to take photos with millions of Zero Twos, but you can customize your Hiro cosplay in three different ways. First, you have his “school” uniform but that’s a little lame to wear to a party. Instead, put on the plugsuit that he wears when piloting Strezilia. And if you want the extra stares, add blue horns that glow in the dark. This is also a good group cosplay, so if you have a few buddies, try to convince them to cosplay the other members of the Darling in the FranXX crew.

7. Natsu from Fairy Tail

  • Episodes: 175
  • Aired: October 2009 to March 2013

Lucy Heartfilia joins the top wizard guild in Fiore, Fairy Tail. Each member of Fairy Tail has their own reason for joining the guild; whether their goal is to become the next best wizard or to find a long-lost loved one, the people of Fairy Tail have got each other’s backs... even if all they do is argue.

There are wizard costumes and dragon costumes, but what about a dragon wizard costume?! Natsu is a fun character to cosplay as with his pink hair, Arabian-like outfit and Fairy Tail guild tattoo. If you already have the famous tattoo, then this cosplay is a no-brainer; but if you don’t, then you can always buy a removable tattoo from Amazon or draw it yourself with a marker. You can also attach a Happy plushie onto one of your shoulders for that extra pop.

6. Zach from Satsuriku no Tenshi (Angels of Death)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2018 to September 2018

The last thing Rachel remembers is seeing a bunch of people die. Now she’s in a mysterious building and is forced to become a sacrifice. Each floor has a boss that Rachel must escape from and, as luck would have it, she makes it to the second floor. Angry that she escaped, the first-floor boss breaks the rules to kill Rachel on the second floor. Now that the two of them are being targeted by the other killers, they’ll have to rely on each other to make it out alive.

With the gauze and scythe, Zach practically looks like a grim reaper, and if you’re able to pull that off then you should work at a haunted house. First, you’ll need a brown hoodie, red pants and black sneakers. Then, wrap the gauze all over your body as if you were a mummy. Finally, make the scythe out of PVC pipe and cardboard and you’re ready to scare some kids.

5. Luffy from One Piece

  • Episodes: 857+
  • Aired: October 1999 - Ongoing

With the help of his crew, Monkey D. Luffy goes on a journey to find the treasure known as One Piece and become the Pirate King. To get there, he’ll have to defeat many enemies who have special powerups. Luckily, Luffy eats the Gum Gum fruit which turns his body into rubber and gives him the ability to stretch his body in every which way. With this, he can match up with his foes’ power, and get closer to finding the treasure.

Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, anyone can be a pirate for Halloween. So trump all of their costumes by becoming King of the Pirates! It’s best to cosplay Luffy if you live in a warmer area since he wears an open vest and shorts. For the little scar under his eye, use black liquid eyeliner to draw it. For the giant scar across his chest, use liquid latex and outline it with black liquid eyeliner to make it pop. Just be careful when ripping it off, because your chest will burn for a hot minute.

4. Ren “Joker” from Persona 5 the Animation

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2018 to September 2018

The world is filled with evil and corrupt people, so it’s up to the Phantom Thieves to stop them. The Phantom Thieves steal people’s hearts by going into the cognitive world and fighting the evil shadows. But who are the Phantom Thieves? Just a couple of misfit teenagers.

Wanna cosplay something cool and mysterious? The Ren, or Joker, is the one for you! Joker is the definition of suave with his black curly hair, long black coat, red gloves, and stylish poses. We’re not saying you should go pick up the ladies in this one, but we won’t be surprised if a girl gave you her number while in it! For some extra pizazz add a Morgana plush or a gun if the environment you’re in allows one.

3. Saitama from One Punch Man

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2015 to December 2015

After training to be the greatest superhero, Saitama now ends every battle with one punch. This plain, bald, thin, and derpy man goes about his everyday life bored out of his mind. Even the worst villains in the world are no match for Saitama.

It may be Halloween, but everyone loves a good joke costume. For otaku, that joke is the bald-headed wonder Saitama. If you have a really good derp face or a really calm demeanor, then Saitama is perfect for you. A dinky supersuit and bald cap will make you the clown of the party, but if you want them to roll on the floor, then create a sign that says “Ok” Seriously, even we’re laughing just thinking about it.

2. Eren from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack On Titan)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2013 to September 2016

Eren always wanted to see what lies beyond the walls, but giants resembling human males known as “titans” roam the lands and only feast on people. Humanity is at the brink of extinction and their only safe haven are the walls that surround three large cities. One day, a titan breaks through the wall that kept Eren and his family safe and a titan kills his mother. It was that day that Eren vowed to kill every titan in existence.

Don’t have otaku friends but still want to dress up as an anime character? Skip Goku and go for Eren from Attack On Titan. Eren is another cosplay that you can customize depending on your skill level. Some people will buy the printed Attack On Titan leggings, while others will buy white pants and brown garters. If you’re crafty, try making the 3D maneuvering gear and blades. If you’re extra crafty then add a smoke machine to wow the crowd.

1. Dabi from Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2016 to June 2016

Izuku Midoriya lives in a world where superpowers, or “quirks”, are the norm, but he was born quirkless. Inspired by the number one hero All Might, Izuku wants to become a hero just like him. But how can he be a hero without a quirk? Through a fateful encounter with the legendary super hero, Izuku might make his dream a reality.

The perfect cosplay doesn’t get better than Dabi. Even if people don’t know who you are, Dabi’s design is pretty scary to the average person. His purple-brown arms, jaw, and eyes plus the staples make for a technically impressive cosplay and frightening one for Halloween. Dabi also has three different trench coats, so chances are you won’t run into another Dabi cosplayer wearing the exact same thing. And if your friends are on board, try to gather them for a League of Villains cosplay group. All cell phone cams will be on you!

Halloween – the time of year cosplayers are always the most prepared for, especially over the general population. But if you decide you’re going to cosplay for Halloween rather than just being a policeman or a vampire or a zombie, deciding on exactly what to be can be a serious challenge! Some people want to be recognized by as many people as possible, some want to keep to some kind of Halloween theme, and some just want to have fun being their favourite character for the day outside of a convention – and all of those are fine! It did make creating a Top 10 Male Characters to Cosplay for Halloween list quite a challenge, though, but we tried to cover all of those things as best we could.

Our list, therefore, has characters from shows that have a good Halloween theme to them, some with easier and some with more challenging outfits, and some that are still good no matter how old they are. And of course, we will give our reasons for why we chose each one of them as well! No matter what you decide to cosplay this year, we hope that you’ll have fun and that this list can at least give you some inspiration to get started.

10. Genos from One Punch Man

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct. 2015 – Dec. 2015

One Punch Man is a new twist to a superhero story. Instead of a small group of superheroes fighting back to protect the world from evil, often with super powers of some kind, in One Punch Man anyone can have a trial to be labeled as a superhero - and it's treated like a job. But with the number of strange creatures and monsters constantly attacking everyone, it's a good thing there are a lot of heroes around to fight them off. One of them is Saitama, a bald man that people typically underestimate at first glance. But the reality is he can defeat any monster with just one punch! Studying under him - against his wishes - is a young cyborg named Genos, who is determined to learn Saitama's strength.

Genos is our next choice for the Top 10 Male Cosplays for Halloween! Be ready for a challenge, though - most of his visible skin is metal because, as previously mentioned, he is a cyborg. Wearing a sleeveless shirt, both of his metal arms are showing, and his cybernetics extend up his neck leaving only his face as "normal." His eyes are solid black with yellow irises as well, which could be done with some awesome sclera lenses. Luckily, after you finish all those challenges, his clothes are a simple black shirt, black trousers, and boots. But believe us, the focus will be on your awesome armour anyway! For a challenge that still isn't difficult to wear when you go out, Genos is our pick!

9. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

  • Episodes: 51
  • Aired: Oct. 2003 – Oct. 2004

Fullmetal Alchemist is a favourite anime amongst new and old anime fans alike. Its setting is a pseudo-European world where alchemy exists under the strict rule of equivalent exchange - for whatever you want to create, an equal price must first be paid. The brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric learn the hard way that ignoring this rule can have dire consequences when they try to bring their mother back from the dead. Alphonse loses his entire body; his soul attached to a massive suit of armour is all he has left. And Ed loses his arm, which is replaced by "automail," an advanced prosthetic. While the brothers quest to get back what has been taken from them, they discover there is a much bigger problem in the world to deal with that is threatening to destroy everything.

Edward Elric's cosplay is nothing less than iconic amongst anime fans. But at the same time, it's simple enough that beginner and advanced cosplayers can wear it! Starting with simple black trousers and a black shirt, the most important part is his long red jacket. And don't forget the symbol on the back of the cross with the snake wrapped around it! Finish with white gloves and a blond, braided hairstyle and you've got a Fullmetal Alchemist cosplay ready for Halloween this year. Ed is especially perfect for smaller guys or cross-playing girls because his character is canonically short. You can be an accurate size without having to worry about spending the day on massive platforms! Fullmetal Alchemist may be old, but it's never forgotten.

8. Zero from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)

  • Episodes: 4
  • Aired: Oct. 2013 – Apr. 2014

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch is a gripping and intense story about political intrigue, conspiracies, coupes, and terrorism. Its setting is a future dystopian Japan where the country has been taken over by the empire of Britannia, and ruled with an iron fist. Lelouch Lamperouge is a high school student with a lot of secrets. Firstly, he's actually a prince of Britannia, though he rejects everything about that part of him. Secondly, he's actually the tactical mastermind known as Zero, the leader of a rebel cell known as the Black Knights. Because no one has ever seen Zero's real face, Lelouch is able to keep his identity a secret as he runs the rebellion against his own father's empire.

Specifically, we have chosen Lelouch's outfit when he is Zero as a great cosplay for Halloween. The outfit is very intense and will definitely draw attention to its use of purple and black, and it's high coloured cape. What makes Zero's outfit the most intriguing is the helmet he wears to protect his identity. The helmet covers his entire face behind a bubble similar to a motorcycle or diving helmet but is coloured with the same garish scheme as the rest of his outfit. If you're looking to me both mysterious, while making quite a scene at the same time, Zero is a great choice. Code Geass may be growing older, but it's no less beloved and recognised. Lelouch is cooler and smarter than any of us could ever hope to be, so why not have that glory yourself for a day?

7. Yuusuke Makishima from Yowamushi Pedal

  • Episodes: 38
  • Aired: Oct. 2013 – July 2014

Since its initial release, Yowamushi Pedal's fame has been slowly spreading beyond Japan where it has always been incredibly popular. Another anime in the ever growing sports anime genre, Yowamushi Pedal is the story of high school cycling teams. The story focuses both on long marathon races between the main teams, as well as the life and relationships of all the characters. With how many episodes it has, Yowamushi Pedal has had plenty of time to flesh out many interesting and unique characters. One of the most popular is Yuusuke Makishima, a green-haired, gangly, admittedly odd boy from the main team.

Yuusuke Makishima is very different from the rest of the characters on our list of the Top 10 Male Cosplays for Halloween, but that means he's a unique option! As you can probably predict, he wears sports clothes - specifically, a yellow and white cycling uniform for his high school. It's easy and comfortable, and another good option for cosplayers living in warmer places for Halloween or going to more active events and parties where mobility is important. What makes Makishima extra fun to cosplay over the rest of his teammates with the same clothes is his long orange-streaked, green hair. When else will you get the chance to have long, flowing hair in that unique of a colour scheme? Plus you get to spend the whole time pulling ridiculous and fun faces in every photo because Makishima's expressions are always uniquely him. His character will not be in the new season of Yowamushi Pedal either since he graduated, so cosplay Makishima while you can!

6. Levi, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Apr. 2013 – Sep. 2013

Most anime fans know the story of Shingeki no Kyojin by now, but in case you need a quick refresher - humans have been forced to live in walled cities to defend themselves from Titans, giant human-like creatures that feed mercilessly on humans. They're very hard to defeat because of their size and resilience, but humanity has been trying to fight back as much as they can. Hoping to find more answers about how to defeat the Titans once and for all, the brave Survey Corps under the leadership of Captain Levi do regular recon missions beyond the walls. And now it seems that there are humans that can become Titans within the walls too!

Shingeki no Kyojin swept not only Japan but the world by storm when it came out. And in many countries, despite a large cast of fantastic characters, Levi was often the most popular. Whether it's is amazing ability to fight Titans or his cold and mysterious demeanour, he was quick to become a fan favourite despite not being in the first half of the series. His Survey Corps uniform is out next choice for Top 10 Cosplays this Halloween season! Especially with all the complicated belts that make up his 3D maneuver gear, Levi's outfit is definitely unique and super fun to wear (though perhaps a bit uncomfortable in reality, but that's part of the reality of cosplay!). Levi will definitely earn you a lot of attention, and you get to act like you're better than everyone else for the duration of the day. What could be more fun than that?

5. Ryuunosuke Akutagawa from Bungou Stray Dogs

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2016 – Jun. 2016

Bungou Stray Dogs was a big hit this year, and on top of an interesting story concept, it also had great art. And of course, that makes it good pickings for cosplayers! But before that let's talk about the plot. Bungou Stray Dogs follows several characters with supernatural abilities. They use these abilities for many different purposes. Some are simple, like running a business - others much darker, like carrying out hits for the mafia. Mostly the story is about the Armed Detective Agency's agents and what happens in their lives.

Most of the characters of Bungou Stray Dogs are named for literary writers or their famous works, and our choice for a great Halloween cosplay is no different. Ryuunosuke Akutagawa, named after the famous Japanese author of short stories, is a member of the Port Mafia. His supernatural ability is the terrifying power of being able to rip apart anything, even space, through a coat that turns into a black beast called Rashomon (named for one of Akutagawa's short stories). Ryuunosuke's outfit is incredibly classic - a long, high-collared black jacket, black trousers and dress shirt, and a striking white cravat. Reminiscent of a historical gentleman wearing this cosplay will make you not only suit the Halloween season well with all the black, but you're also going to look classy and smooth. Some people might think you're a vampire but at Halloween, it's not really a bad mistake.

4. Ikoma from Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2016 – Jul. 2016

What's Halloween without a good zombie story? And Koutetsujou no Kabaneri is the newest zombie anime to catch everyone's attention. With a setting of feudal Japan had it been open to the industrial revolution, it has a unique spin on the traditional zombie tale. Humanity has been forced into walled cities connected by massive train lines manned by koutetsujou, or massive iron trains. When Ikoma's city is taken over by the zombies, known as kabane, he is infected but is able to save himself - or kind of at least. Ikoma becomes a kabaneri, or half-human, half-kabane. And he's stuck between both worlds, not trusted by humans but with too much humanity to be a mindless beast. But he may be everyone's only hope...

Ikoma's outfit is really unique, with a traditional and modern fusion of elements. An Ikoma cosplay would consist of ripped blue trousers, and a lot of belts and metal straps covering his shoulders, arms, and chest. With the kabane virus spreading through him, Ikoma also has visible red lines or scars covering his arms and chest that would be really fun to replicate with makeup or body paint. His outfit definitely looks like he's been through some serious fights - which he has, clearly - and you'll definitely look hard-core this Halloween. After all, you're a half zombie fighting in a steampunk zombie apocalypse! You've got to admit that's cool, and a great Halloween cosplay even for a non-anime Halloween event.

3. Allen Walker from D.Gray-Man

  • Episodes: 103
  • Aired: Oct. 2006 – Sep. 2008

D.Gray-Man originally was an older anime, but with the new season just finished airing its back on everyone's minds! And just in time for Halloween, too. D.Gray-Man takes place in an alternate world where demons exist - in fact, they are created by humans who cannot bear the loss of their loved ones and enter a contract with the Millennium Earl to bring them back. But the reality is they come back as a horrible, tormented demon. The only force that can defeat these demons is Innocence, and the wielders of this substance usually become exorcists at a branch of the Order. Allen Walker is one of these exorcists trying to protect humans from demons and to defeat the Earl once and for all. But of course, there is a lot more to this white-haired anime boy than meets the eye...

Allen Walker's Black Order uniform is a perfect cosplay this Halloween - and you have three different ones to choose from! All involve a jacket, trousers, and gloves in either a black and white or black and red colour scheme. And don't forget to practice your makeup skills adding Allen's unique facial marking across his eye and down his cheek. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can even create his Innocence arm, which dramatically changes into a weapon when he activates it - definitely a cool prop to create and have! D.Gray-Man is coming back with new episodes right now, so it's incredibly timely to cosplay Allen this year and take advantage of the anime's upsurge of popularity once again!

2. Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2014 – Sep. 2014

Tokyo Ghoul is already an anime with a great story to enjoy during Halloween time. In a future Tokyo, humans live alongside creatures called ghouls. These ghouls look just like humans, but they can only eat human flesh to sustain themselves - any other food makes them sick. Ken Kaneki is a university student who gets into an accident, and unbeknownst to him, has some ghoul organs transplanted into him to save his life. This changes Kaneki into something between a human and a ghoul, and he has to learn how to adapt to how this will affect his life. Will he be a human or a ghoul? Or can he somehow be both?

The themes in Tokyo Ghoul are dark and terrifying, and the violence quite gory. Kaneki's character design reflects this. His ghoul form makes a great cosplay for Halloween time if you're looking for a recent anime character whose outfit will also suit the spirit of the Halloween season, even if someone doesn't know the character. It's also not too difficult! Kaneki simply wears a black shirt and shorts, both ripped along the edges, with black finger and toenails. Don't forget his white hair - and perhaps most importantly, his mask which covers most of his face with a zippered grin and eyepatch. You'll definitely be creepy, even if someone has no idea that you're cosplaying - but other anime fans will easily recognise what you're doing, too!

1. Guts from Berserk (2016)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2016 – Sep. 2016

Berserk is a story perfect for the Halloween season with plenty of dark magic and demons to go around. It follows the swordsman Guts, a powerful warrior who has been cursed and constantly has to fight off the undead and all of Hell's darkest occupants. Originally a cut-throat mercenary, he does what it takes to survive in a gritty, medieval world ruled by a cruel and corrupt church. Guts' fate is consistently tragic as he loses everything he cares for, and fights with all his strength to try to get it back. His story shows that the world is not a black and white one with a clear cut between what is right and wrong, but rather a world that exists in the grey in between.

If you're looking for an intimidating, challenging, but undeniably cool outfit to cosplay this Halloween, Guts is perfect. Known as the Black Swordsman, he wears all black armour and a long, billowing black cape. He also has quite short and simple hair, especially for an anime character, which means if you want to skip having a wig for Halloween you can get away with it a lot easier. That doesn't make Guts an easy cosplay though because his armour will definitely be a challenge, but if you take it on, you'll definitely have a cosplay that will leave people impressed and surprised. And did I mention he carries a massive sword that is more like a steel beam? Now that's really cool. With the new season just finished and another to come out next year, now is a great time to bring this cosplay back!
