Three Episode Impression

One of the big titles of the season without being a sequel as to be Yakusoku no Neverland. Based off of a Shounen Jump manga, Yakusoku no Neverland is about children in an orphanage who cannot leave until they are “adopted.” If you read the brief synopsis here, you’ll know Yakusoku no Neverland is supposed to have an eerie feeling behind it. Honestly, I was eager for Yakusoku no Neverland, but in the end, it’s really predictable. Some people will argue with me about that, but if you think about the plot in any sort of way, you’ll know what to expect, minus the monster creatures. The anime reminds me a lot of Ishiguro Kazuo’s Never Let Go, which plays off a similar idea of people in this place who have no idea what their purpose is. Yakusoku no Neverland is a dark fantasy version, but without the character development, it feels like it’s just about a bunch of kids planning their escape. Then in episode 3, they bring in Krone (well, she came at the end of episode 2) and she creeps me the heck out. She reminds me of the goth loli from Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge but so much scarier. Then there’s the kid that looks like Sasuke and will probably brood just as much. Overall, I’m not super impressed with Yakusoku no Neverland, but it’s a good dark fantasy to watch if you are in the mood for it.
