For the last several years, sports anime has continued to wow us here at Honey’s Anime. Maybe because the animation is getting better or maybe it’s because the stories are getting more intense, but sports anime continue to keep our eyes and ears glued to our monitors as we watch in sheer awe. We can feel some of you out there now with your eyes glued to your screens wondering what shows gave us this level of excitement in the spring of 2018. 1. Megalo Box

It’s been quite some time since a good boxing anime like Hajime no Ippo has come alone and graced the anime world. Yet, with Megalo Box, that has changed as this show is utterly fantastic. Filled with some beautiful animation, stellar storytelling and a truly awesome futuristic boxing theme, Magalo Box is just incredible to say the least. The series ends with its 13 episode and we just have this one question: Will there ever be a season 2 for Megalo Box? Because we need it!

2. Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV)

When we read about Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, we instantly had this thought. How could an anime about horse girls be fun to watch and not strange? Though, when episode one of Uma Musume: Pretty Derby dropped, we were quite surprised at this enjoyable light-hearted series. Studio P.A. Works did a phenomenal job with animation and style to create a simple and fun slice of life series about horse girls living life and racing for fun. If you desire a different type of sports series, we recommend trying out Uma Musume: Pretty Derby. Sometimes the strangest ideas can be some of the most intriguing ones.

3. Captain Tsubasa (2018)

Back in the early 80s a soccer—football, for most—anime came out called Captain Tsubasa based on a popular manga series of the same name. 30 years later, Captain Tsubasa returns to the anime world now done by studio David Productions and it couldn’t be any better folks! With heart pounding games, wonderful animation/art and a cast of cool characters, Captain Tsubasa is easily one of the best sports anime in the last year let alone few years. Even if you don’t consider yourself a soccer—football—fan we feel you might want to give a few episode of Captain Tsubasa a try. We are hooked and know many of you out there will be, too!
Final Thoughts
Sports anime like the ones seen in spring 2018 are showing signs that the genre is continuing to become more mainstream with each passing season. Even those who don’t particularly care for real-life sports still can find enjoyment in the anime versions and that is saying something.
