One of the marks of a fujoshi is that you’re always hungering for more! Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of good BL anime out there and once we finish a series, we’re often left with an empty feeling. Maybe, as much as you’d like, you don’t have the pleasure of focusing hours into another series when duties in the real world call for your attention. Have no fear, for we have three simple minisode series that are cute enough to pique your interest and tide you over until you have time to devote to something longer!
Hora! Mimi ga Mieteru yo! (Look, I Can See Your Ears!)
- Episodes: 12
- Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Shounen Ai
- Air Dates: August 2018 – November 2018
Da Shu is a mangaka with no relatives living a solitary life until he gets a most peculiar roommate. Miao is a strange human-looking creature with cat ears and a tail that can transform his head. Unfortunately, his normal form is an incredibly cute boy with adorable ears! Da Shu has to try to keep anyone from discovering the boy’s strange nature but his actions tend to make them look like a couple!
There’s very little setup, it’s just ‘boy with cat ears is here’. Once we accept this, however, we’re delighted with super cute scenes and tender moments. Da Shu’s expressions when he’s overwhelmed with Miao’s cuteness are extremely relatable, making this anime laughter AND doki-doki-inducing.
Caramel Honey
- Episodes: 30
- Genres: Comedy, School, Shounen Ai
- Air Dates: June 2018 – August 2018
Ayato is a dude with bad luck just looking for a fresh start. Unfortunately, that fresh start is at a new school full of delinquents! He’s also cursed in that when his glasses come off, everyone around falls in love with him. The second they’re back on, though, everyone calms down and loses their memories of it. When the biggest delinquent of them all, Horiguchi, catches Ayato without his glasses, Ayato can’t wait to get them back on. Unfortunately for Ayato, this does nothing to make Horiguchi lose interest!
These episodes are SO SHORT at only 2 minutes but they manage to capture intense moments quite well. Ayato is your typical crybaby uke and Horiguchi is the scary-yet-doting seme. And don’t worry, there’s no beating around the bush. With such short episodes, they gotta get the action going quick!
Xiao Lu he Xiao Le (Beryl and Sapphire)
- Episodes: 72
- Genres: Game, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life, Comedy, Drama, Magic, School, Shounen Ai
- Air Dates: August 2018 – February 2019
Xiao Lu and Xiao Le are good friends. And enemies. And lovers? In this show with a different setting every episode, you never know what you’re in for!
The description has to be so short because very little holds true across each episode! The shortness of each one makes the varying settings more palatable. It’s got pretty nice animation and our colorful Xiao Lu (green-haired) and Xiao Le (blue-haired) stand out in a sea of minor characters with bald heads. Even as their characters change, the two maintain somewhat of an unchanging demeanor in how they interact with their world which makes it interesting to watch! It seems they’re inexplicably bound to each other no matter what world they’re in.
Final Thoughts
Even amongst shows with little room for plot developing, you can find some gems. We don’t always need something deep and serious. Sometimes you just want cute cat boys, the classic good guy with a bad guy, or to keep things fresh with random gayness. In this case, we’ll take it where we can get it.
