5 Fun Witches from the Last 5 Years

As we get closer to the spookiest season of the year, the time comes to show appreciation for some of our favorite supernatural creatures! Yet even as the month ahead is full of scares, not all of the season has to be fear-inducing. Though witches can often be terrifying, there are a number of these powerful women that can also be good-natured and entertaining.

Today, we decided to take some time to appreciate some of the most funloving witches we’ve seen in the last few years! These characters break the stereotypes of the typical supernaturally-gifted person, using their abilities to bring a smile to the faces of those around them. They may be powerful or set apart from others in their respective settings, but they use any challenges they may face to make the world around them a better place. Without further ado, let’s dive right into the most fun witches of the past five years!

1. Atsuko Kagari from Little Witch Academia

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: January 2017 – June 2017

Atsuko Kagari is a first generation witch attending Luna Nova Magical Academy, striving toward her dream of becoming like her idol, Shiny Chariot. She works hard for this dream, though she is often stubborn and reckless in her approach to learning magic, which has made her a bit of an outsider. Her struggles in using magic often result in hilarious situations, such as when she lets loose a cupid bee in the middle of a party or when she decides to tame a rogue broom to win a race! Atsuko can feel down from time to time, but for most of her time at Luna Nova, she is optimistic and enthusiastic about achieving her goals, making her a bright spot among the students there. Like her idol Shiny Chariot, Atsuko wishes to use her gifts to make others smile, with her boundless compassionate heart being a big part of why she stands out from the crowd! She can often get herself and her friends into unusual situations, but she is able to succeed in these occasions, thanks to her ability to think outside the box.

2. Mary Smith from Mary to Majo no Hana (Mary and the Witch’s Flower)

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: July 2017

A spunky red-headed girl with a relatively average life, Mary Smith is thrust into the world of magic when she discovers the mysterious witch’s flower one day. She views this magical world with wonder and amazement, especially when she discovers that she is treated as a prodigy in this world, rather than the failure she believes she is in reality. She goes along with the praise, pretending she is a powerful witch and fits in at the school, even going so far as to meet with the head scientist to discuss spell techniques! But when she is told she must give up her magical powers to the evil headmistress of the magic school, Mary stubbornly refuses, instead seeking a way to set it all right again. She uses her compassionate heart and newfound magical abilities to fight for what she believes in. And she has a pretty good time along the way, even making a few friends of her own with her stubborn nature and refusal to step down from her morals!

3. Mirai Asahina from Mahoutsukai Precure! (Maho Girls Precure!)

  • Episodes: 50
  • Aired: February 2016 – January 2017

Mirai Asahina is not your typical witch, being a lively and sometimes strange young girl with the ability to transform into Cure Miracle. Mirai embraces her quirky interests, especially when it comes to her teddy bear Mofurun, even going so far as to ask the strange magical witch she has just met to get Mofurun to talk! She meets Izayoi Riko by chance, and the two discover that, together, they can transform into Pretty Cure, which leads to the two studying magic together. Mirai is new to the magical world entirely, but she approaches her newfound abilities in the same manner she always does – with enthusiasm!

4. Akane Kowata from Flying Witch

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 – June 2016

Makoto’s older sister and mentor, Akane Kowata is one of the most powerful witches around. She is outspoken and carefree in nature, despite her status. Though Akane cares for her family and is a great mentor to her sister, she often teaches her unusual or troublesome spells, purely out of amusement. For example, she makes chocolates that turn people into animals at one point, purely because she can, despite the level of difficulty! She is usually out traveling the world, but she does take time to visit her dear sister often. Akane brings a joy to using magic that is not often seen, even with her prominent status among the community of witches.

5. Maria Sarushima from Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2015 – June 2015

Even surrounded by so many other witches, Maria Sarushima manages to stand out with her easygoing and friendly personality. She is overly friendly at times, having been known to be physically affectionate with her friends often, and even acting quite flirtatious toward Ryu Yamada, using suggestive comments, and even her tongue, to lure him! She has few flaws, though she has given up on fighting fate in the past and has also been known to use her powers selfishly. Maria’s ability to see into the future can be quite useful when she uses it with purpose, and though her sunshine-like personality can sometimes mask the doubt she feels, she is overall a positive and fun-loving witch!
