As big fans of romance anime, we know the feeling of getting a bit burnt out from the genre when most romance series follow the same theme. High school boy longs for high school girl and/or awkward love triangle that causes drama and comedy in equal amounts.
Romance anime can often become stale but we have a solution for those looking for series to spice things up! If you’re in dire need of strange/quirky romance anime, then this list is going to be right up your alley! Welcome to our Top 5 Strange Romance Anime to Spice Things Up list!
5. Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita. (Science Gell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: January, 2020 - March, 2020
Math and science have proven themselves to be powerful tools in solving life’s greatest mysteries. Scientists Ayame Himuro and Shinya Yukimura are about to test out if science and math can also unravel an age-old mystery. What is love? Journey alongside our strange couple as they attempt to understand love after Ayame confesses to Shinya but both aren’t sure what love truly is. Science/math are about to enter unknown territory in Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita!
Honestly, love can be a difficult emotion to explain for many. Science Gell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It, though, goes a bit beyond explaining how and what love really is. As bizarre as it might seem, this odd look at a romance series makes for one of the most comedic anime we’ve seen in some time! Watching Shinya attempt to explain love by the beats of a heart or witnessing Ayame ask for very private dreams to be explained in greater detail is so odd and all too hilarious! If you’re looking for a newer anime to rid yourself of overly generic romance series, then take a lesson from our studies and watch Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita!
4. Tasogare Otome x Amnesia (Dusk Maiden of Amnesia)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2012 – June 2012
Teiichi Niiya is a high school student who goes to a school known for bearing tons of dark/occult-like myths. A ghost girl named Yuuko that wanders the halls of Seikyou Private Academy is known to all but must be just another myth, right? As Teiichi soon discovers while on an outing for his club—the Paranormal Investigation Club—Yuuko isn’t a mere myth but a real “living” ghost girl! Being the only one able to see Yuuko, Teiichi takes it upon himself to help her solve her death and why she’s trapped in this school. As Teiichi enters this dark mystery, he will soon learn a truth that has been kept hidden for quite some time…
One of our absolute favorite quirky romance series—making it perfect for our list—is Tasogare Otome x Amnesia. Comedy, romance, and mystery are just a few genres Tasogare Otome x Amnesia falls into but the romance element is what really makes this series something quite amazing and extraordinary. Those who love supernatural-themed tales—and want a good romance anime in tangent—will no doubt fall in love with this ghost story dubbed Tasogare Otome x Amnesia.
3. Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou (Dog & Scissors)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2013 – September 2013
Harumi Kazuhito is an avid reader and can easily name his favorite author, Natsuno Kirihime. During a brief café stop, Harumi ends up involved in a robbery and saves a young woman from a gunshot aimed at her. While facing death’s doorstep, Harumi is given the ability to be reincarnated but not in a human body. Harumi awakens as a dachshund dog and even worse, finds himself locked up by a truly terrifying woman who seems to understand what he’s thinking! This woman is ironically the girl he saved at the café and, even weirder, Harumi’s favorite author!?
Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou is a peculiar romance series that doesn’t do the typical romance stuff. Due to this “couple” being two different beasts, you almost laugh at the strange way Kirihime shows her “love” towards her new pet. Thankfully, the whole oddness that is Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou makes for a truly entreating series that doesn’t get enough recognition, sadly. Don’t worry if bestiality is something keeping you from this series, Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou isn’t creepy or overly perverted and is quite tame overall.
2. Sankarea (Sankarea: Undying Love)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2012 – June 2012
Super zombie fan Chihiro Furuya has always wanted just one thing in his life…an undead girlfriend. While most would think this desire to be not only weird but impossible, Furuya has a secret that proves he can bring back the dead. When his poor cat Baabu gets killed in a car accident, Furuya uses an old notebook that contains the secrets to making a resurrection potion. While in desperate need of a strange plant, Furuya meets a girl named Rea Sanka who has a garden filled with the plant needed in the mixture. Furuya ends up reviving his cat successfully and strangely must also revive Rea after a freak accident kills her! Now Furuya has gained both a zombie cat and possibly a zombie girlfriend?
Sankarea is a bizarre twist on the usual horror theme that is zombies. Rather than a horror series with flesh-craving zombies, Sankarea is a romance filled comedy focused on the love between a human and a zombie…we said this was a weird romance anime right? Nevertheless, as odd as this romance is, Sankarea is quite comical and can be heartwarming when the romance heats up. Romance enthusiasts who complain the genre is overdone, we point you to Sankarea to prove romance can always be done quite differently.
1. Midori no Hibi (Midori Days)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2004 – June 2004
Seiji Sawamura has gained a scary reputation in his school due to his overwhelming fighting power ebbing from his right hand. Dubbed The Mad Dog, Seiji screams delinquent the minute you lay eyes on him. However, under the tough looks that is Seiji lies a desire to be loved. After several strikeouts in the game of love, Seiji makes a strange vow to fall in love with his right hand for the remainder of his high school life. Strangely enough, Seiji might get what he desires as he wakes up one morning to find his right hand has transformed into a girl from his school named Midori Kasugano!
We’ve probably all suffered our occasional strikeouts in the world of love so we can understand Seiji’s strange joke of falling in love with his right hand. That’s why Midori no Hibi works so well as a romance comedy! Not only does Seiji’s right hand become a cute girl who secretly admired him prior to this odd transformation, but now Seiji must live his school days as a tough dude with a girl as his hand! Midori no Hibi is a great classic romance series that even now makes us laugh at its bizarre nature and we know you guys/girls will too!
