Fruits Basket (2019) Preview (No Spoilers)

After her mother passed away and her caretaking grandfather had to live in another household while their home was being renovated, high school student Tooru Honda found herself living in a tent in the middle of a forest. The forest that Tooru now lives in just so happens to belong to the Souma Clan, of which her classmate Yuki is a part of. Yuki’s discovery of Tooru’s secret coincides with Tooru’s discovery of the Souma Clan’s secrets: they turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when they are hugged by members of the opposite sex.

Yuki Souma Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. He Transforms Into a Rat

Yuki is part of the Souma Clan which means that when he is hugged by a member of the opposite sex, he will transform into a Chinese zodiac animal, in his case, it’s a silver-furred rat. Because of the curse that he shares with fellow Souma Clan members, he avoids any physical contact with the girls in his class. His desperation to keep his secret leads to some hilarious encounters with his classmates where he comes up with increasingly outlandish ways of dancing out of their grasp.

2. He Has Girlish Looks

Nearly all the girls in Yuki’s class are infatuated with him because he’s cute. In fact, they will try to outfit him in dresses to emphasize his androgynous look and the boys in his class will also share in that infatuation. Although he’s initially insecure about those looks, Tooru reassures him that being called cute, even as a man, was still a compliment. Using that motivation, he takes pride in wearing a dress for his upperclassman, much to our own satisfaction.

3. He Avoids Intimacy with Others

When Yuki was younger, he was accidentally touched by someone of the opposite sex and turned into a rat in front of many others. To “protect” him, the memories of those children were erased by another member of the Souma Clan. Yuki’s past social trauma is something a lot of us can sympathize with, despite that, he still strives to get past those traumas thanks to the help of Tooru and the unintentional inspiration of Kyou. By proxy, Yuki now becomes an inspiration for those of us still reeling from our own past social traumas.

4. He's a Skilled Fighter

We’re not sure where Yuki learned how to fight, we just know that he’s an incredibly talented fighter. Even when Kyou goes of to train for months on end in martial arts, he’s never able to defeat Yuki in a fight. Furthermore, Yuki’s agility as a fighter has made it so that he can use it in the most unlikely of circumstances, such as covering a delivery man's face in the blink of an eye before he can notice that one of the Souma’s transformed.

5. He's a Gardener

It’s a little known fact that Yuki tends to a personal garden in the Souma Clan forest. Considering Yuki did not grow up with a lot of friends, it’s unsurprising to see that he took on a hobby like raising plants in his spare time. He cares enough about his vegetable garden that he went out of his way to protect them during a typhoon. The only other person aware of Yuki’s garden is Tooru.

Final Thoughts

Yuki Souma is a multi-faceted character with many seemingly contradicting features. He’s cute and prettier than most men, but also physically tougher than any other men. While he’s called the Prince by most of the other students at his school, they might not be so willing to call him that if they saw him in his rat shape.
Despite having anxiety in social environments, he’s a deeply caring person whose lack of intimacy is only due to past trauma, he genuinely wants to interact more. Even if you don’t love Yuki, it’s easy to appreciate his many sides. What’s your favorite thing about the rat of the Souma Clan? Let us know in the comments below.
