6 Anime Like Bocchi the Rock! [Recommendations]

Many of us have talents that are so incredible and unique but we hold ourselves back. Whether we are scared of failure, scared of the drama our talents could bring, and/or scared to be judged by the world, it isn’t uncommon to find people with talent rarely showing it to more than a handful of friends/loved ones. Sometimes though, the world will give us an opportunity to show our skills and that can be seen in the more recent anime called Bocchi the Rock! Following the socially inept Hitori Gotou—Bocchi—this talented guitarist yearns to be in a band and gets her shot despite her fears. We really love the deep themes of dealing with internal issues in Bocchi the Rock! which made us wonder if there are similar anime we can recommend to those who dig this musical/drama. Luckily there are and we wish to share them with you in our 6 Anime Like Bocchi the Rock! list!

Similar Bocchi the Rock!

1. K-On!

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2009 – June 2009

An accidental misunderstanding causes Yui Hirasawa to join the Light Music Club at her high school. Not wanting to get their hopes up, as Yui lacks a lot of musical skills, she quickly apologizes and asks to leave the club. However, the club members are reluctant to let her go as they are lacking members and will soon be forced to disband. Yui still has her heart set on leaving until they play her song and awaken a hidden musical talent inside Yui. Now with fire behind her, Yui decides to stay with the strange Light Music Club and what awaits are days of music, hanging out, and the high school experience!

K-on! and Bocchi the Rock are radically different at first glance. While one is more slice of life, comedy, and music, the other—in this case, Bocchi the Rock—is a bit more serious toned. Yet, we recommend K-On! for all those who dig the world of Bocchi the Rock because both are not only about music but about young women going out and doing something spontaneous with their lives!

Yui’s whole story could have concluded if she didn’t join the Light Music Club but after she does, she enjoys a whole new world and equally gave us fans movies and multiple seasons to enjoy alongside her! Again, that first step can be tough but as long as you aren’t putting yourself in danger, that first step in life can lead to passion and music which is why both of these shows are so similar despite their extreme differences in style and tone!

2. Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu (Komi Can’t Communicate)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2021 – December 2021

High school is here for Hitohito Tadano! In an attempt to avoid trouble and just make his high school days quiet and calm, Hitohito makes an effort to just blend into the world of school. That plan completely shatters when he meets Shouko Komi who he sits next to on day one and now, has a giant target on his back from her fans. Understandable when you see Komi as she’s beautiful and seems to be the perfect girl! Hitohito soon interacts with Komi and learns that the image doesn’t match the description as Komi is unable to communicate due to her anxiety! Feeling bad for her, Hitohito makes it his mission to break the anxiety plaguing Komi and teach her how to socialize!

Many of us here at Honey’s Anime know the pains of trying to communicate but being shut down due to our own bouts of anxiety and social awkwardness. That’s why series like Bocchi the Rock and Komi Can’t Communicate are perfect. They show that even anime characters—who have way cooler looks than us—understand our struggles! All jokes aside, we loved Komi Can’t Communicate as it is a fun series with comedy, drama, and a female character who just screams adorable despite her anxiety! Just like Bocchi the Rock, Komi Can’t Communicate proves one can escape their crippling isolation all it takes is a chance encounter!

3. Eromanga-sensei

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2017 – June 2017

Sagiri Izumi has struggled to bond with her step-brother Masamune due in large part to the recent passing of their parents. Despite this, Masamune still tries to keep up with his job as a light novel author but still wonders who his illustrator, the famous Eromanga-sensei famed for her lewd images, is. The revelation occurs when Masamune learns Eromanga-sensei is none other than his sister and thus begins the strange bonding that may lead to a relationship neither one of them expected.

We mentioned it before, talent can come from those who barely ever show themselves. Just like Sagiri—aka Eromanga-sensei—Hitori has talents but is too timid and shy to at first reveal them to almost anyone. Eromanga-sensei may contain a lot more ecchi and rather bizarre themes than Boochi the Rock but that doesn’t mean the series is too radically different. Both series explore how difficult it can be to deal with extreme shyness and how just a few people in your life can break you out of that shyness! If you want an ecchi—but semi-relatable—anime to watch after Boochi the Rock, we think you’ll enjoy Eromanga-sensei!

4. Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken (I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: October 2014 – December 2014

If you met Kaoru Tsunashi, you’d think she’d be married to an ordinary man to match her seemingly normal personality. By day, Kaoru works hard as an office worker and while she does seem to like drinking, Kaoru seems typical of those in her field. Enter, Hajime Tsunashi, Kaoru’s husband who is always working on his blog and watching anime since he’s a hardcore otaku. This married couple doesn’t seem to have anything in common but underneath their differences lies a love that might be stronger than most would ever understand. Why not take a walk in their shoes and see their world for a second in I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying!

Finding happiness in this difficult world can be tough. Yet, when we go out of our comfort zone we sometimes can be genuinely surprised by how much happiness waits in the oddest places. I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying and Boochi the Rock are two very different shows with one focusing heavily on comedy versus music/drama but they both show the way life is sometimes unpredictable and can be fulfilling in the weirdest ways!

5. Net-juu no Susume (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: October 2017 – December 2017

At the age of 30, Moriko Morioka quit her job and now wishes to just play online and forget about the real world. Under the male character alias Hayashi, Moriko lives her life now in the MMO Fruits de Mer. As time passes, Moriko has now completely abandoned the real world in favor of the MMO but one chance meeting with a young man named Yuuta Sakurai will reshape fate and lead the two into a strange union. Especially when Moriko learns that Yuuta also plays Fruits de Mer!

As MMO junkies ourselves here at Honey’s Anime, we can understand how easy it is to lose yourself online. Unlike the real world, MMOs have everything you’ll ever need to be happy but sadly, they are just games and unlike series like SAO, we exist here and not in a fictional landscape. Still, the beauty of a show like Recovery of an MMO Junkie, is it will be quickly relatable to those who have endured a lot and used the MMO worlds as their escapism. Equally, Recovery of an MMO Junkie mirrors the themes of Bocchi the Rock as they have two protagonists that break from their realities to find a future that is unknown, and scary but bright if they choose to reach for them.

6. Show by Rock!!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2015 – June 2015

Cyan Hijirikawa has just found herself in an unbelievable scenario. While playing a rhythm game, one of her absolute favorites, Cyan was seemingly transported into the game world and now is in Midi City. Here, the law isn’t the main focus but music is and with an evil musical power aiming to take over, Cyan is going to be dragged into a battle of rhythmic proportions! Can Cyan’s talents help her here or will she be facing a game over!?

Are you looking for a bit less serious anime after some of the recommendations we had and just want an isekai that contains cute girls and music? Show by Rock!! should be the series you’re looking for as it fills all those checks perfectly. Cyan is a bit of a nervous girl so she can be related to Bocchi pretty easily but we think Show by Rock’s protagonist is a bit goofier than Bocchi is. Nevertheless, we love Show by Rock!! and have no doubt you Bocchi the Rock fans will too. Come on, their names are almost identical too!
