It pulls us in, it’s exciting, it’s something mysterious and they have many names such as, ghosts, spirits, hollows.... well the list can go on and on with all the different names. Kyoukai no Rinne is one of those anime and the spirit concept is something anime deals with regularly.

Sometimes it can be in terms of energy from characters who have died but project some part of their energy in the main protagonist. At other times, we have full blown spirits/ghosts that are lost or just want to reek havoc upon the world. Usually, the spirit concept is just a small plot in a larger story.

Take Hayao Miyazaki’s anime movie, Spirited Away, as an example. When thinking about anime with spirits, one would maybe think more of anime like Bleach. You know, Death Gods and Hollows aka, evil spirits.

Take a look into this list of recommendations for similar anime like Kyoukai no Rinne, and hopefully you will get inspired to jump into these anime.

Similar Anime to Kyoukai no Rinne / Similar Anime to RIN-NE

1. Ranma ½

  • Episodes: 161
  • Aired: April 1989 – September 1992

Ranma 1/2 is about Ranma Saotome and his father, Genma, who train at the Saotome school for all kinds of martial arts. One day they both fall into a cursed springs at the legendary Jusenkyo, during their training. Because of this, Ranma rises up from the water as a girl and Genma comes up as a panda. Their transformations happen every time they come in contact with warm and cold water.

Now, why Ranma 1/2 is similar to Kyoukai no Rinne is quite simple, actually. Both anime are from the same author and one could say that Kyoukai no Rinne is the newborn child of Ramna ½. They both project similar feelings when it comes to the atmosphere in the anime.

Both of these anime have a comedy feel to them but they differ in how they bring out their comedy. Ranma uses a more practical kind of style, turning human characters into animals in a funny way, while Kyoukai no Rinne relies on jokes where the main protagonist speaks with spirits.

If you liked the story in Kyoukai no Rinne, then Ranma 1/2 will suit you very well as they’re much alike. You have the simple line-up, boy meets girl, they workout problems with spirits together and by doing so, it leads to some small romantic plots. So, in short, Ranma 1/2 is a clear choice for any anime fan of Kyoukai no Rinne.

2. Re-Kan!

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2015 – June 2015

Re-Kan is about a young girl who has the ability to see spirits and similar supernatural things in her city. The story of Re-Kan follows, Amami Hibiki and her friends while they come in contact with the supernatural.

Re-Kan is similar to Kyoukai no Rinne in a lot of ways, but also it has a different kind of feel to it. They are similar to each other because you have humans who can interact with spirits. But here is where the two anime take different paths. In Re-Kan!, the main protagonist talks to the spirits and by doing so, they stay on Earth.

Kyoukai no Rinne does the opposite, trying to make the spirits find peace and move on. When it comes to the humour, both anime are funny in different ways, which is a good thing. More similarities between them is they give the viewers similar feelings in the sense of atmosphere and also where the story takes place.

3. Bleach

  • Aired: October 2004 – March 2012

Bleach is about Ichigo Kurosaki, who has the ability to see hollows, which are evil spirits. He quickly meets a death god named Rukia, in a fight with a hollow. Rukia and Ichigo work together, as he becomes a death god himself and gets dragged into the world of spirits, death gods and other supernatural beings.

Bleach is similar because you have the main protagonist who has the ability to interact and see spirits. Both anime have comedy which is similar and a big element but, of course, some jokes may be different between them. When it comes to the main plot, it’s like looking into a mirror.

You have the human boy who can see spirits and befriends this female death god (Shinigami). In Kyoukai no Rinne, we have a human girl who can see spirits and befriends a male shinigami. And in both anime, these pairings meet spirits and work together to solve problems. So, Bleach would be a good choice for anyone who likes Kyoukai no Rinne.

4. Noragami

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2014 – March 2014

In Noragami, the world is made out of two parts, the shore far away and the shore where humans live. The shore far away is the place full of spirits, who can control humans and can do a lot of damage to the world. These troublesome spirits, from time-to-time, appear on the near shore while those with weapons called Shinki (made out of spirits of dead humans), drive them away.

Both Noragami and Kyoukai no Rinne are about the supernatural and the ability to see spirits. More similar things between the anime is the atmosphere and feeling to botch shows. Another similarity is that both anime have a male protagonist who works with spirits in some way. Then we have a human girl as the lead role and is the only person who can see these spirits. Be warned, both of these anime will quickly become a favorite among a lot of viewers out there. The combination of the light humour, the supernatural spirit world and action, is a plus when it comes to anime like these.

5. Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies)

  • Episodes: 1

The story in Hotarubi no Mori e is about Hotaru, who is a young girl and she gets lost in this magical forest where all kinds of supernatural things happens. She soon meets this young boy who’s name is Gin, together they will surely find a way to get out of the mysterious forest.

The similarity between this anime movie, Hotarubi no Mori e, and the anime tv-show, Kyoukai no Rinne, is they both have a lot in common. They both present similar atmosphere which is, in short, the feeling one gets while watching both of these anime. We also have the setting and the storyline which aren’t that far apart and because of this, Hotarubi no Mori e is a good recommendation for people who want to experience the same feelings they got from Kyoukai no Rinne.

I would say that the qualities that would make these two different, is Kyoukai no Rinne isn’t as serious as Hotarubi no Mori e.

6. Shakugan no Shana

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 2005 – March 2006

Shana is a hunter, and her goal in life is to battle these evil spirits who possess humans. Because she doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the human world, she turns the spirits into shadows of the person the person they once were. When a flame for each person goes out, they will slowly fade from the world.

This is what would have happened to Yuji, but he quickly finds out that he got this special ability which gives Shana new strength. Together, they continue Shana’s mission of fighting evil spirits and, at the same time, keep the human world in balance.

Both Shakugan no Shana and Kyoukai no Rinne deal with fighting spirits, together with a person, who isn’t quite human but has features of what a normal human would look like. Other similarities is that both anime have a character with red hair who fights evil spirits. And of course, both Shakugan no Shana and Kyoukai no Rinne take place in a world where supernatural powers and abilities are reality.

A great anime that is worth the watch! The biggest difference would be Shakugan no Shana is more of a serious kind of anime, but nevertheless, it’s a great anime and people who like Kyoukai no Rinne would also like this anime as well.

It’s fun and interesting when anime deals with the more supernatural aspects of our world. When it comes to thoughts and beliefs about the afterlife, spirits and all, that is where they grab a lot of viewers attention. Which is good because it’s interesting to see another persons thoughts about the “what if this were true and what would happen”, etc.

Anyhow, here we have some great recommendations and I hope they piqued your interest.
