When we think of the series RWBY, a lot of controversy surrounds this 2013 creation. “Is it anime?” “Where is the artwork?” “This is not anime!” Such things can be found while exploring what RWBY is about, but beneath its negative standing in the press, we found a lot of worthwhile comments to commend its creator, the late Monty Oum and his team at Roosterteeth. A notable component of RWBY is that it utilizes a lot of computer graphic programming and Oum and his team were not ashamed of working with a method they were fine-tuned in. Pushing boundaries and barriers, their techniques allowed total control on something that they could claim as their own work, their baby. Essentially, breaking ground on what anime can be composed of, the series RWBY is the start of something new.

RWBY is set in a place called Remnant, where young guys and gals train to become Hunters and Huntresses, protecting the world from “Creatures of Grimm”. Focusing on Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, the four girls form a team, yielding their own exclusive power and weapon. With intricate and thoroughly planned scenes, RWBY demonstrates how Oum and his team wanted the actions of the characters to appear realistic, creating something unfamiliar to broadcast at the time, and putting effort into all aspects of production. Although standing on its own, we present to you 6 anime like RWBY, hoping that this inspires the fighting spirit within! Enjoy!

1. God Eater

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2015 – March 2016

God Eater takes place in post apocalyptic 2071 where the world is surrounded by monsters called Aragami. In humanity’s last stand, an organization called Fenrir is created. Using Aragami cells, God arc weapons are developed and can only be wielded by God Eaters. We are then introduced to God Eater Lenka, a New-Type, whose God Arc takes the form of a gunblade. A revolutionary weapon, it is up to Lenka to get rid of these creatures once and for all.

In comparison, God Eater and RWBY provide viewers with the sense of “all hope is not lost”. There is somewhat of a depressive nature to the stories in that our heroes do not always distribute a “happily ever after” after each battle. While we always root for a win, Lenka and team RWBY have a lot resting on their shoulders. With dangerous creatures threatening humankind, unfortunate circumstances occur along the way, but must do so in order for light to emerge at the end of the tunnel. In addition to this, God Eaters and RWBY operate special weapons made specifically for them.

As many probably know, RWBY is an American anime from Rooster Teeth and created by Monty Oum. It is said this is the first anime to come out of America, even though it really isn't an anime. This could be argued, but let's leave that for later.

The character development, action sequences, and storyline are all wonderful while still keeping that Japanese element of anime in it. If you've seen this American anime and want to see others like it based off of the story, characters, action scenes and 3D CGI, then maybe the selections below will help you to continue your anime needs!

Soul Eater and RWBY has some pretty good similarities with each other, albeit the high school feel, friends overcoming challenges, and ultimately fighting for what you believe in. Soul Eater has to be one of the closest anime series to RWBY.

Especially when it come to the main character using a scythe as their weapon of choice. This anime is set in a school for shinigami technical weapon meisters, which is based on three groups of individuals with their own weapon meisters and a human weapon.

3. Buso Renkin (Arms Alchemy)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Oct. 2006 – Mar. 2007

Buso Renkin is similar as far as fighting for a cause and going against beasts (or Homunculi in this case) that threaten the existence of humanity. It may not be so intense as RWBY, but there are creatures that resemble the homunculi in Buso Renkin, while providing some equally great actions scenes as well.

In this anime, high school student, Kazuki Muto, is suddenly killed one night while trying to save a mysterious girl from a mysterious monster. Believing the event was real, he wakes up in school and comes to the conclusion that it was just a dream. Although, he soon discovers it really wasn’t a dream when a monster appears and attempts to kill him and his sister.

Tokiko, who had saved him, reappears and describes the monster as a homunculus, and that the same creature is what killed him during his last encounter. The reason Kazuki is standing and breathing is because she returned the favor and revived him with alchemy by placing a medallion in his chest, which acts as a replacement heart.

This medallion reacts to the user when activated and transforms into a unique Buso Renkin (a weapon that can destroy a Homunculus), which takes the form of a huge lance. This begins the journey of exterminating the Homunculi and defeating their master.

  • Episodes: 1hr. 41 min.
  • Aired: Sep 14, 2005

This anime film, is pretty similar to RWBY as far as action scenes. The CG is pretty awesome compared to Advent Children, but would be exceptional when it comes to fighting. Both have that unique element of cinematography and weapons use when conveying the emotions of a fight.

I immediately thought about Advent Children when I saw the actions sequences in RWBY. Taking place after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the world begins to recover from devastation by working hard towards a new future. Although, a new threat emerges as three individuals strive to resurrect Sephiroth by using the remains of the extraterrestrial villain, Jenova.

One man, with the help of others, seeks to end the destruction and chaos that will be brought upon everyone by the three individuals. With all of their efforts, they fail to stop them and now have to face the evil that is Sephiroth.
