Best Anime Siblings of 2019

The Elric brothers, Mob and Ritsu, Jonathan and Dio... these famous anime siblings share a special bond (whether friendly or not) that can’t quite compare to anything else, which is why they make for such memorable characters. This year, we got several sibling groups that stood out from the crowd, so let’s take a look at our favorites and see if any of them could go down in history as some of the best anime siblings ever!

5. Miku, Itsuki, Nino, Ichika, and Yotsuba Nanako from 5-toubun no Hanayome (The Quintessential Quintuplets)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2019 – March 2019

These five not-so-studious siblings need to do well in school to secure their wealthy family’s future, but can their new tutor Fuutarou manage to whip them into shape? Luckily, this harem comedy has a cast of adorable girls with not just unique designs, but their own personalities, quirks, and struggles as well. It’s easy to pick a favorite quintuplet and root for her—our favorite has to be the shy, awkward Miku, who is the first of the siblings to start studying seriously. But, to be honest, we love them all!

4. Rui and Hina Tachibana and Natsuo Fujii from Domestic na Kanojo (Domestic Girlfriend)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2019 – March 2019

For these three “siblings”, it’s vitally important to remember that Rui and Hina aren’t blood-related to Natsuo. As long as you keep that in mind, everything will be fine... for the most part. In any case, Natsuo’s teacher crush and the random girl he lost his virginity to end up becoming his stepsisters through his father’s remarriage, but he’s still determined to make them both happy no matter what societal taboos get in his way. The relationship between the three is actually quite sweet, even though the anime does everything in its power to be as trashy as possible. It’s a strange situation, but if they can all make it work in the end, who are we to judge?

3. Quitterie and Funicia Raffaeli from Kanata no Astra (Astra: Lost in Space)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2019 – September 2019

Resident haughty tsundere Quitterie doesn’t seem to care much for her younger sister Funicia, at least at first. Since their mother ignored both of them as children, Quitterie was forced to care for her sister instead of living out a normal life and she resents Funicia for it. However, she changes her tune when Funicia gets lost and almost killed in an alien forest—at the thought of losing her sister for good, Quitterie panics and risks her own life to save the one family member who actually cares about her. They still bicker sometimes, but after that scare, Quitterie and Funicia are inseparable.

2. Emma, Norman, and Ray from Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2019 – March 2019

The orphans at Grace Field House may not be biological siblings, but they’re the closest thing to family that any of them has ever had. Emma, Norman, and Ray have always been especially close, but when they discover that the kids are secretly being raised as meat for demons, they put their heads together to devise a means of escape that will save as many of their siblings as possible. With Emma’s undying optimism, Norman’s wicked cunning, and Ray’s careful planning, they’ll make sure nobody ever gets sacrificed again!

1. Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado from Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2019 -September 2019

Tanjiro and his younger sister Nezuko would do anything for each other. Tanjiro spends years training to be a member of the Demon Slayer Corps so he can find a way to change Nezuko back from a demon to a human, and Nezuko resolves to grow stronger so she can control her instincts and protect her brother. It’s just about the most wholesome and adorable thing ever, especially since Nezuko can shrink herself to ride around in a wooden box on Tanjiro’s back during the day.

When Rui the Spider Demon insults their familial bond, Tanjiro and Nezuko muster up all of their strength to unleash a fiery dual attack that knocks his head clean off. Rui’s fake “family” will never match the love that the Kamados have for each other!

Final Thoughts

This year, we got some wholesome family bonding... and some not-so-wholesome family bonding, in the case of Domestic Girlfriend. But overall, siblings came out strong in 2019, and we can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store for us!

After the hard-hitting East Coast lifestyle hit me a bit too hard, I started pursuing my passion as a writer in my cozy home state of Ohio. Aside from that, I spend my time cooking, cosplaying, collecting anime merch, and being an improv comedy actor. I also love sneaking alliterations and stupid puns into my writing, so be on the lookout for them! 😉
